Toward Meteorology at Student's Door Step

(Inputs from D. Ram Rajak, Indrani C. Singh, P. Jayaprasad and Manorama Mohanty)

A meteorological awareness program, Met-Aware-2016, aimed to create public awareness towards different aspects of weather and climate was held on July 16, 2016 at Anand & Vallabh Vidyanagar (VV). The program had three parts: (i) Two popular lectures followed by an 'Open House', (ii) Weather Observatory and Museum visit at AAU, and (iii) Educational visit to Amul Dairy.

First part of the program i.e. a Scientists-Students interactive session along with 2 lectures by experts in the field of weather/climate/satellite meteorology was arranged at G.H. Patel College of Engineering & Technology (GCET) auditorium and co-organized with NV Patel College of Pure & Applied Sciences (NVPAS), Sardar Patel University (SPU), VV. This event was attended by around 340 participants including students and faculty members from SPU. Two popular lectures full of information on general meteorology and satellite meteorology were delivered by Dr. C. M. Kishtawal, Group Director (AOSG), SAC and Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Senior Meteorologist, IMD Ahmedabad. The most vibrant and interactive session of the event i.e. ''Open House'' received huge response from the students. The Panel of Experts consisting of Shri Rajeev Jyoti, Dr. P. K. Pal, Dr. Raj Kumar, Dr. C. M. Kishtawal, Dr. Vyas Pandey, Dr. A. S. Rajawat, Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Dr. S. M. Bhandari and Dr. R. P. Singh answered the questions asked by the participants. They solved a number of thought provoking queries from diversified field raised by the students. The program was supported by Dr. Basudeb Bakshi (Principal – NVPAS), Dr. Himanshu J Trivedi (HOD, Physics department, NVPAS), and volunteered by Dr. Mehul Pandya (SAC).

The second part of the program comprised of a Visit to weather observatory and museum at Anand Agriculture University (AAU) followed by an educational visit of IMSA members and their family members to Amul Dairy (Anand). Participants saw various instruments used to collect different meteorological parameters at AAU weather observatory. Dr. Vyas Pandey, HoD (Agrometeorology, AAU) and Dr. Manoj Lunagaria comprehensively explained the working of the instruments and importance of the in-situ observations of the weather parameters.

The Indian Meteorological Society – Ahmedabad Chapter (IMSA) organized 'SIMPLE-2016' ( tudent nvolvement in eteorological arameter earning - 2016) program for students of various schools of Ahmedabad's rural and urban areas on August 10, 2016 in

collaboration with Vikram Sarabhai Space Exhibition (VSSE) and District institute for Education and Training (DIET) Ahmedabad at VSSE Auditorium. Chairman – ISRO, Shri A. S. Kiran Kumar was the Chief Guest of the program.

Students and teachers from 44 schools from different parts of Ahmedabad district were invited. Meteorological parameter measurement Kit (MetKit) units were distributed to the participant schools where students will be involved in collection of meteorological parameters and their analysis. This Metkit will be used to collect three parameters i.e. temperature (instantaneous, minimum and maximum), relative humidity, and rainfall. Chairman ISRO interact with students and clarify different innovative questions from students during ''Open House'' interaction session of the program. Shri Tapan Misra, Director – Space Applications Centre (SAC) also addressed the students and encouraged them to involve them in science. Dr. Raj Kumar, Chairman – IMSA said that this program is the brain-child of ISRO Chairman who proposed this activity some years back. IMSA has taken this initiative to realize his vision into reality by distributing Metkit units for schools in Ahmedabad district. The activity will be expanded to Gujarat and India in different phases

The IMS participated in joint programmes on Heat Wave management with by Global Change and Sustainable Health Institute of Taru Leading Edge (TARU), Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), Understanding Climate and Health Associations in India (UCHAI), Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar (IIPH-G), National Resource Defence Council.

stFirst event National Consultation on Roadmap for Planning Heatwave Management in India was held in New Delhi Wednesday 21 September, 2016 in which Dr D.R. Pattanaik, Treasurer, IMS presented operational Early Warning Mechanism for Heat Waves in India.

NRDC and partners the Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar (IIPH) convened a discussion at the TROPMET 2016 Summit under the leadership of the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS), to review city-level resilience activities and scale to leading states across the country. International experts from NRDC and key leadership from India's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), state disaster management authorities (SDMAs), health departments and meteorological offices from Gujarat, Odisha, Maharashtra and Telangana attended the discussion..

Election of new Executive Council (EC) of many chapters was abnormally delayed. After constant reminders from the NC, chapters other than Visakhapatnam and Gwalior completed their elections before TROPMET. Undue delay in selecting new council does not speak well of chapters. It hampers activities of the IMS. It is matter of concern that despite of repeated reminder and personal calls from National Headquarters election for new council was not conducted till the end of December by Visakhapatnam and Gwalior chapters. Efforts will be hold simultaneous elections for the NC and EC of local chapters in 2018.

The NC is planning to bring out Annual Report of IMS for the year 2016. All chapters are requested to forward report of their chapters for including in the Annual Report. It should cover all activities of the chapters with photos.

The IMS will be carrying out various programmes during 2017 as part of Diamond Jubilee Celebrations as given in News Letter. These will be planned in consultation with Local Chapters. The exact details of each programme/activity will be communicated to all chapters and IMS members. Chapters are requested to participate in these programmes actively to make these great success.
