Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas Canvas provides a tool to import Bb materials that works pretty good. Not everything will come over as you see it in Bb as we are two different LMS platforms. You may find it that its just easier to rebuild a course in Canvas if you have a straightforward course. We’ve provided guidelines (based on other customers experience) on how to best import Blackboard content into Canvas our Best Practices page. You can also View out What to expect page to see how the courses will appear and function upon import. Where Blackboard course content is nested and controlled through the course menu, Canvas content is presented in a "feed" style and controlled more fluidly. Because of these differences, there will be complications when importing a Blackboard course (that has been exported to a .zip file) into a blank Canvas course. It's important to remember that Blackboard and Canvas are two entirely different learning management systems (LMS). The point of this guide is to offer the best methods and workarounds possible.

Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas

Canvas provides a tool to import Bb materials that works pretty good.  Not everything will comeover as you see it in Bb as we are two different LMS platforms.  You may find it that its justeasier to rebuild a course in Canvas if you have a straightforward course.  We’ve providedguidelines (based on other customers experience) on how to best import Blackboard contentinto Canvas our Best Practices page.  You can also View out What to expect page to see howthe courses will appear and function upon import.

Where Blackboard course content is nested and controlled through the course menu, Canvascontent is presented in a "feed" style and controlled more fluidly. Because of thesedifferences, there will be complications when importing a Blackboard course (that hasbeen exported to a .zip file) into a blank Canvas course.

It's important to remember that Blackboard and Canvas are two entirely different learningmanagement systems (LMS). The point of this guide is to offer the best methods andworkarounds possible.

Importing Course Files from Blackboard

Stepbystep instructions on exporting only the course files from a Blackboard course and into aCanvas course. This tutorial is for instructors who do not wish to import other content within thecourse (announcements, assignments, quizzes, anything that isn't in the Central Course FileRepository).

Course Import: What to Expect

If you are planning on importing a Blackboard course into Canvas, there are some things youshould know about the process and what to expect when using and navigating an importedBlackboard course.

"Where will my content go?"

The tools in Blackboard and Canvas are not identical. When using the Course Import Tool,Canvas will translate Blackboard content as best it can. Some content that will not transfer (or

Page 3: Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas...Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas Canvas provides a tool to import Bb materials that works pretty good. Not everything will

transfer so incompletely it is virtually useless) from Blackboard includes:

BlogsCollaborations (collaboration sessions are not saved in the first place and have adifferent meaning within Canvas)JournalsMessagesReplies to discussion board topicsWikis (incomplete/unlinked pages)

Note that there are also issues with incomplete importing of Course Files,Discussions,Contacts,and Group Tools. Our complete and specific list of how to go about copying these and othercontents into a Canvas course can be viewed on our Best Practices page.

The content that does transfer will end up in the following areas:

PagesThe Pages section of Canvas can be very confusing after importing. Much of the course contentas a whole is divided between Files and Pages, and it seems that most group tools, web 2.0tools, and content areas have a page made for them. Although the page will be created, it willserve as a "bookmark" of sorts for the tool or content and will generally not be functional (manylinks leading to other Pages sections and text that failed to be linked).

Page 4: Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas...Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas Canvas provides a tool to import Bb materials that works pretty good. Not everything will

QuizzesAlthough quizzes generally import quite well, it is helpful to know a few things before using themfor a class:

Quizzes that are import are unpublished. They become available to students oncethey are manually published by the instructor.Tests and surveys will both import into the Quizzes section, whereas pools will importinto the Question Banks section within Quizzes.Blackboard offers types of questions that do not exist within Canvas. When questions informats other than multiple choice, fill in the blanks, essay, matching, numerical,or formula are imported, they will become textonly questions by default. This will makeit so students cannot provide an answer for the question(s), which will count as a wronganswer. It is very important that quiz questions are checked for this before theybecome available to students. If a question has imported to a textonly questionunintentionally, change the question format by clicking edit this question.

Course Imports: Best Practices

Since Blackboard and Canvas are very different learning management systems, some thingssimply will not translate.

To work around this issue, we have developed this specific guide of best practices when movinga Blackboard course into Canvas. We have separated different areas of the course andorganized them into three recommendations: best to import with the Course Import Tool,best to import separately/gather content and recreate, and best to start fresh.

Page 5: Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas...Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas Canvas provides a tool to import Bb materials that works pretty good. Not everything will

Best to Import Using the Course Import Tool

Announcements, Calendar, Glossary, & TasksThese organizational tools will easily transfer over to Canvas. Note that there are no toolsequivalent to "glossary" or "tasks" in Canvas, so the content will transfer to thePages section ofyour course.

Assignments, SafeAssignments, & Grade CenterThese three tools will import handinhand. Since there is no SafeAssign feature within Canvas,both assignments and SafeAssignments will import as normal assignments. This, in turn, willcreate a column for each assignment in the Gradebook.

Tests, Surveys & PoolsTests, Surveys and Pools will all import into the Quizzes section. Note that Pools will not showup on the front quizzes page, but will be accessible by going to Quizzes > Manage QuestionBanks.

Some quiz questions may be in formats that do not transfer to Canvas. Formats other thanstandard quiz questions (multiple choice, fill in the blanks, essay, matching, numerical, formula)should be checked before a quiz is published. If a question format is not supported by Canvas,the question will become a textonly question (students will not have the option to answer).

Page 6: Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas...Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas Canvas provides a tool to import Bb materials that works pretty good. Not everything will

Discussion BoardA recent update to Canvas has improved the course import tool and as a result, the discussionboard prompts will now import into your new Canvas course. Since the prompts are generallywhat the instructor needs, the course import tool will be sufficient. If you find you need studentreplies, you should save them using an external program (Microsoft Word or the collect tool inBlackboard).

Best to Import Separately or Gather Content & Recreate

Course Files & DocumentsBecause Blackboard files are nested, files from Course Files and Course Documents end upimporting quite messy and are hard to find in a new Canvas course. We recommenddownloading all course files and documents to a .zip file, then importing them directly into yourCanvas course's Files section. This way, your files will be easier to find and organize.

Wikis

Although Wikis technically transfer over to the Pages section with the Course Import Tool, therewere issues during our testing where many wiki pages were missing. Additionally, the pagesdelink upon import. If you would like to keep your wiki(s), the best way to do this is copy andpasting each page's content into the Pages section of your Canvas course, then relinking themback together.

Web LinksWeb links do transfer over from Blackboard, but they get disorganized and become hard to findin the process. So, it's best to just create new links in your Canvas course. If you have a lot oflinks in your Blackboard course, it may be best to keep track of the text and urls in a separatedocument on your computer (for example, in a Word document).

Start Fresh

Groups & Group ToolsGroups and group tools simply do not transfer over. Although the import tool will create a pagefor some of them, they are generally blank (or display little information) and have no enrollmentsor tools connected to them. Use Canvas' Groups feature to create student groups instead.

Page 7: Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas...Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas Canvas provides a tool to import Bb materials that works pretty good. Not everything will

Course Folders (General Course Organization)Although this isn't something that is necessarily imported into the course (unless you countwithin Course Files), it is something that you will want to rethink when putting together yourcourse.

You will receive a notification of success once your course has been fully imported. Thecontent should appear within your course immediately upon completion.

Importing Blackboard Course Files into Canvas

One thing that Blackboard and Canvas do have in common is a common place to store coursefiles. In Blackboard this is the Central Course File Repository, while in Canvas it is simply Files.

If you would like to import only course files (as opposed to the entire course), we recommendthat you do not do this through the Course Import Tool and instead directly through theCCFR/Files areas.

This tutorial will take you through the steps involved in exporting your files from Blackboard as a.zip file, then importing them in the Files area of Canvas.

Exporting Files from Blackboard

Go to your Bb instance and find the course you wish to export files from.

In the Control Panel, click the rightfacing arrow on the Files tab. You will now find yourself inthe Central Course File Repository.

From the list, check the boxes next to the files that you would like to copy to Canvas. To

Page 11: Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas...Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas Canvas provides a tool to import Bb materials that works pretty good. Not everything will

choose all files in the repository, check the box at the very top of the menu.

At the bottom and top of the list, there will be a Download Package button. Once you haveselected your files, click this button to download them to your computer.

A download window will appear. Make sure that Save File is checked, then click OK.Choose where on your computer you'd like the file to be saved. For convenience, it is a goodidea to save the file to your desktop. Click Save.

Importing the .zip File into Canvas

Now that you have a .zip file of all of your documents, you can upload it to your Canvascourse files.

From the courses tab, choose the course you would like to import your files into.

Click the Files tab to view your existing course files or upload new ones.

In the top right corner of the menu, click the import a zip file icon. This is the icon on the farright with the green arrow on it.

You will be redirected to the import files page. Click the browse button, then locate andselect the .zip file on your computer.

Next, choose where you'd like the file to upload to. Choose the general course files, unlessyou would like them uploaded to a different area.

Once you have completed all of these steps, click the Upload File button.

The file will begin to upload, and a progress bar will notify you when the process is complete.

Page 12: Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas...Importing Blackboard 9.1 Courses Into Canvas Canvas provides a tool to import Bb materials that works pretty good. Not everything will

The course files will now be available within the Files section of your Canvas course. Afterthe process is complete, you will be redirected to this section.
