SPANISH FOR EDUCATORS I

Course/Program Syllabus—Spring 2008 Instructor: Jessica Martinez (Georgina Grogan, instructor of record)

Location: Green Bay Education Association Office

Dates/Times: Tuesdays, January 22, 29; February 5, 12, 19, 26; March 4, 11, 2008 (4:30-6:30 p.m.)

ENROLLMENT OPTIONS:

*For those who qualify as a Wisconsin resident for tuition purposes. This amount does not include student activity/segregated fees that are charged for on-campus courses. Segregated fees are waived unless you are enrolled on-campus during the same semester/session.

Emphasis: This course/program is based on the theory that students with limited English will achieve at higher levels if they believe their teachers welcome them and respect their language and culture. This is grounded in the Dimensions of Learning, Dimension 1, Positive Attitudes and Perceptions about Learning. Description: The purpose of this course is to help educators communicate effectively in Spanish with students and parents who are not fluent in English. Taught by a bilingual educator using materials that facilitate the Spanish language acquisition, this course is built around practical classroom situations and instruction is based on sound principles of foreign language instruction that emphasizes high frequency vocabulary, drill and practice, and opportunity for immediate application. The required text for this course has recently been updated and is accompanied by CD in order to help educators practice between classes and increase retention.

Objectives: At the completion of this course/program educators will effectively communicate in Spanish in the following situations:

1. Pronunciation of the Spanish language and most common Hispanic names 2. Greet a child and/or a group of children and show affection 3. Ask child and/or a group of children for first and last names 4. Ask parents and children about general, school-related, information 5. Utilize general/common school-related vocabulary and phrases

Requirements: Percents are for evaluation of credit participants; noncredit participants will receive a certificate of completion upon successful completion of the program requirements.

Noncredit participants: • Educators will complete the grammar practice activities from each lesson or chapter • Educators will come prepared for each class

Undergraduate Students: • Educators will complete the grammar practice activities from each lesson or chapter

(15%) • Educators will come prepared for each class (15%) • Educators will keep a journal throughout the course reflecting on their experiences as

second language learners. (30%) • Educators will complete a 3-page research paper on the Hispanic families in the United

States. They will interview a Hispanic family that lives in Northeastern Wisconsin, and they will find out about the different challenges the family faces in their new country. (40%)

Graduate Students: • Educators will complete the grammar practice activities from each lesson or chapter

(10%) • Educators will come prepared (10%) • Educators will keep a journal throughout the course reflecting on their experiences as

second language learners. They will reflect on the impact of material learned and make a plan for the different applications in their classrooms. (40%)

• Educators will complete a 3-page research paper on the Hispanic families in the United States. They will interview a Hispanic family that lives in Northeastern Wisconsin, and they will find out about the different challenges the family faces in their new country. (40%)

Note: You need to be present on the last day of the course to talk about your interview. If you do not share your interview with your classmates your grade will be adjusted.

The following Wisconsin Standards for Teacher Development and Licensure are assessed in this course:

#3 Teachers understand that children learn differently. The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.

The following Wisconsin Standards for Administrator Development and Licensure are assessed in this course:
