Our primary aim is to raise money to help local charities support local people where 100% of the money we raise for local causes is passed on to improve lives in our community. We also secure targeted in-kind donations for local good causes such as IT equipment, furniture, bed linen and toys and match people who want to give their time or talents to help in the community with charities who then benefit from their help.

100% of donations received for local charities goes directly to them. We raise our core costs separately.

We encourage anyone who cares about life in Kensington & Chelsea to get involved.

Our aim is for everyone in the Borough, wherever they live or whatever their circumstances, to be able to thrive. When people think of Kensington & Chelsea, they picture prosperity and privilege and yet, despite having the highest property prices in the country, parts of the Borough are deprived.

We champion the work of charities fighting hard to address local big issues such as child poverty, isolation, people living with disabilities or mental health concerns, homelessness, lack of employment prospects and the health and well being of local families.

The Kensington & Chelsea Foundation raises support from local people, businesses and schools to improve lives in the Royal Borough

Welcome from the ChairIt’s been a thrilling year for The Kensington & Chelsea Foundation. In 2015/16, we raised £312,000 and redistributed every penny in the form of grants to 47 charities. We also helped 48 charities with £128,000 worth of in-kind support. You, our supporters, are at the heart of what we do, so a highlight last year was bringing 300 of you together for our Annual Celebration at the V&A Museum in October. Alan Johnson, MP was our special guest and he was brilliantly interviewed by broadcaster Kirsty Lang. Alan spoke about his book, ‘This Boy: A Memoir of a Childhood’, reminiscing about growing up in North Kensington in the 50s and 60s.

Our Annual Celebration 2016 will be held at the new Design Museum on Tuesday 6 December. This will provide our supporters with a perfect opportunity for an early and exclusive visit and we hope you can join us.

We had team changes during 2015. Diana Spiegelberg, our Director moved on last July and Susan Dolton took on the role in September. Working together with our excellent small staff team,

THE KENSINGTON & CHELSEA FOUNDATION

volunteers and trustees, one of her first tasks was to look at how we grow our work for the local community in the next three years.

As a result, you will see us working hard to raise our profile to put us in a perfect position to champion the charities we exist to support and to grow the number of people who support us. We will also expand our knowledge of local charities aiming to help them to maximum effect. As well as growing our work with charities, the two campaigns we created ourselves, Winter Warmth and Summer Sparks, continue to go from strength to strength and show the appetite of local people to respond to pressing local causes. So, we are researching other big needs and how we can devise ways to address them through a new Borough-wide campaign. More news on that soon.

None of our work would be possible without the help of people who love and value this community and want to do all they can to support it. We are incredibly grateful to all of you for your support.

Reaching out & reaching more

Everything we do is about supporting your local community and improving local lives

It all began for the Kensington & Chelsea Foundation in 2008. After living in the Borough for 40 years, Iocal resident Jeremy Raphaely was aware of some of the wonderful local charities working hard to address local issues but realised that some of them were so small that they ‘flew beneath the radar’ of most local people, and lacked the resources to make themselves better known to potential local supporters. So Jeremy decided to try to connect these two sides, and discovered quickly that local residents, after being initially surprised by local levels of child poverty, variations in life expectancies and isolated minority groups in what appears to be an affluent area, were only too pleased to get involved.

Since then, we’ve been helped every step of the way by our generous supporters and we’ve raised a fantastic £3.4 million to improve lives in Kensington & Chelsea through supporting 142 charities. This is an incredible achievement for a small charity in a relatively short amount of time, but we need to do more.

We plan to raise more money for more local charities, encourage more new people to join us in our ambitions and research and develop more ways to help local people. As an endorsement of our work and in recognition of our local impact, we are very pleased to have been chosen by the 2016/17 Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Councillor Mrs Elizabeth Rutherford as her Mayoral charity. The Mayor recognises that our work is entirely focused on making a difference close to home and this philosophy fits completely with her aims.

By supporting the Kensington & Chelsea Foundation, you are joining us in our aim of improving local lives together. We are truly grateful for your help.

The well-being of people who live in Kensington & Chelsea is at the heart of our mission. That is why we champion the network of local, excellent charities that make a huge contribution to the quality of life for many people in the Borough.

We research, select and promote partnerships and projects that really make a difference to local charities and the people they work with. One recent example of both the generosity of our donors and innovation in giving is a collaboration between two funders, The Reso Charitable Foundation and the London Housing Association and the provider, Bathstore.com.

Working together, much needed refurbishments have been provided to three local charities. At SMART, a charity based in SW10 which supports people affected by mental illness

towards recovery, new flooring has been laid. In addition vital bathroom and shower facilities have been installed at two charities. These are Hornimans Adventure Playground in North Kensington, which is a free play resource for children and young people aged 5-16 and St Cuthbert’s Centre in Earl’s Court, which provides a welcoming, safe and informal sanctuary for vulnerable adults.

‘This will make such a difference to so many people who desperately need the facilities we offer. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a very long time and it’s fantastic to see it happen.’stephen milton centre manager, st cuthbert’s centre

Supporting local people through local charities

We pride ourselves on our ability to forge relationships between local people and local charities

CF is a long-time resident of W11 and cares very much about the community of Kensington & Chelsea. We recently took CF to visit ADKC (Action Disability Kensington and Chelsea) which is run and led by disabled people. CF was so impressed by the passion of the people she met at ADKC that she immediately made a donation through the Kensington & Chelsea Foundation to ADKC to help with their volunteer expenses and the costs of reflexology sessions.

‘I like to work through the Kensington & Chelsea Foundation as they help direct me to causes I may want to support and advise me on what is needed where. The work of local charities is tremendous and I would encourage others to help if they can.’cf, w11 resident

We are incredibly lucky to have a diverse business community in Kensington & Chelsea with small family businesses and iconic national brands sitting side by side.

We can help you, whatever the size of your business, with ideas for fundraising to inspire you and your team and connect you to charities you want to support so that you can see the difference you are making first hand. We can broker your local giving, monitor its impact for you and advise and guide you through the whole process with our expert local knowledge.

We value our business partner Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington High Street with whom we’ve worked for over two years. Following a vote by their staff, we matched them with local charity Open Age, which promotes healthy living for the Over 50s. The Royal Garden Hotel team held a variety of fundraising events and volunteering with the charity which led to a wonderful donation of £15,000 to Open Age.

‘The relationship with and the support from the Royal Garden Hotel is just fantastic. Thank you to the Kensington & Chelsea Foundation for your help.’helen leech director of open age

We can help every business in the Borough to get involved with the local community.

Whilst fundraising is central to what we do, it’s not just about the money. We can help you recycle high quality goods including furniture, clothes and IT equipment. Our friends at Pemberton Greenish LLP, based near Sloane Square, recently updated their IT systems and donated 20 desktop computers for us to distribute to local good causes. Through our networks we were able to help seven organisations, including a school for young people who are not in the mainstream system and a charity helping young offenders.

‘It’s good to know that we can call the Kensington & Chelsea Foundation and that they can re-house goods swiftly and efficiently with those who really need them.’ damian greenish chairman, pemberton greenish llp

Kensington & Chelsea has a vibrant mix of young people attending schools across the Borough.

We work with local schools to help inspire, inform and involve children from an early age to know and contribute to the community they are part of. We can come to assemblies, sports days or parent and teacher events and help schools to find ways to build relationships with local charities and community organisations.

Of the 26 schools we engaged with in 2015/16 we recently worked with pupils from Year 6 at Glendower School. They went to visit members of Open Age New Horizons, a lively activity centre in Chelsea for the over 50s. The girls, who were working on history projects about World War 2, spoke to Open Age members about their war-time experiences and childhood memories. This was followed up with an afternoon tea with the girls providing cakes, singing WWII songs and sharing their projects.

‘Your donation is so important to us and will mean that we can provide phone support for 30 women in vital need of help and advice.’ anna smith director of advance

‘These two generations can have a special, even magical, rapport. It is such a pity that both in today’s society lose out. So anything we can do to help – we will!’ open age member

We also enjoyed a project with St Charles Catholic 6th Form College in North Kensington. Their Charity Group made presentations to the whole college on issues relating to domestic violence and organised a sponsored walk to draw attention to the problem which raised £400. This was donated to Advance which supports women experiencing domestic violence.

Our Winter Warmth campaign encourages local older people who can afford it, to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to us. We then redistribute every single penny raised to vulnerable older people in the Borough to help them cope with their winter fuel bills. We work especially closely with Age UK K&C, Citizens Advice and Nucleus Legal Advice Centre who not only help us with referrals but also offer wider care and expert advice to those in need.

Through the Winter Warmth Campaign and with your help we are able to keep people like Mr DF warm and take away

the anxiety of paying their bills. Mr DF is 90 years old and frail. He is housebound and has complex health problems including rheumatoid arthritis and high blood pressure. As a result he feels the cold and has the heating on throughout the day and was worried when he recently received a high bill. We were able to help Mr DF with a grant of £500 to keep him warm and importantly to set his mind at rest.

Mr DF is just one of 70 local people we have been able to help through our Winter Warmth campaign in 2015/16.

Our Campaigns:

No one should choose between heating or eating

20% of local older people live without heating and 60% ration their use of fuel

School summer holidays can be hard for low income families who struggle to pay for opportunities for their children. Summer Sparks 2016 will be our third year of fundraising for local community partners to help them give children the chance to learn new skills, go to new places and enjoy summer. Activities include arts, cooking, crafts, drama, music, sports and dance. Some children also get the chance to enjoy day trips and residential breaks.

All of our work is about collaboration and bringing people together to make a difference locally. We are so grateful to every single one of our friends and supporters – our Kensington & Chelsea Foundation family. Every penny we receive for charities is passed directly on to help them achieve their aims. We also rely on those who appreciate the value of the Foundation itself and contribute to our core costs, which we raise separately.

Of course, the financial gifts are hugely important, but the money is only part of it. What we aim to do is to bring people together, to create a better sense of community. There are many ways you can get involved. Do you have bright ideas for fundraising? Could you open your house to your neighbours, and both get to know each other better and learn more about what’s happening in your local community? We would be glad to help you make that happen.

• Would you like to learn more about local issues and the people working hard to address them?

• Would you enjoy joining our Patrons and Friends group and attend our events?

• Do you have any particular skills which you would like to donate to us to help your neighbours?

It would be wonderful if you would join our growing group of supporters and friends and become part of our community. Our contact details are on the back page and we would love to hear from you.

Bringing people together to make a difference

Thank you to everyone who contributes in any way. You are very important to us

We have a small team, based at 111-117 Lancaster Road, London W11 which is just a short walk from Ladbroke Grove Underground Station.

We couldn’t do what we do without a fantastic group of people who give their time to us, including those who support us by volunteering, those who work on our Event Committee and our Board of Trustees.

Help us spread the word We want more people to know what we do and about the issues in Kensington & Chelsea. Please spread the word to your friends and people you work with and encourage them to get involved. The more people who join us, the more we can do.
