The word ikat stems from the Malay - Indonesian ‘

mangikat’ meaning to bind , knot or wind around. Inherent ornamentation of textile.Highly priced textiles in the world. In principle , Ikat or resist dyeing involves the

sequence of tying and dyeing sections of bundled

yarn to a predetermined color scheme prior to

weaving. Place of origin is Turkey and Afghanistan.

INTRODUCTION

Found in the painting of caves of Ajanta in 6th century’After 17th century the art & skill of ikat textile have been

found to influence the greek costumes.In today time Ikat have become a major inspiration

source for many countries of Japan and Taiwan.

HISTORY

There are three categories of Ikat Single Ikat (Warp Ikat or Weft Ikat):

It involves tying & dyeing of either warp or weft threads. Combined Ikat:

warp & weft Ikat coexist in different parts of the fabric, with both thread systems occasionally overlapping.

Double Ikat:

Both warp & weft threads are tied & dyed in such a manner, that when woven, threads from both axes mesh exactly at predetermined points, to form a motif or pattern.

RAW MATERIAL

Grabbing silk filaments from a pot of boiling cocoons.

Threads wound onto a turning frame.

Reeling the bobbins of silk.

A vertical frame holding several bobbins feeds the threads onto a very large spinning wheel.

PROCESS INVOLVED

Warp threads on the patterning frame ready to be marked out for dyeing.

Warp bundles bound ready for dye bath.

MOTIFS

White – Knowledge, good will, light, enlightenment, present tense and the deity Balaram.

Red – Vigour, beauty, blood. Black – Death, mystery or suspense quality, and Lord

Jagannath. Yellow – Gold, past tense, beautygreen symbolizing youthblue symbolising the sky or the universe.
