Do yon remember, comrades, how we fought and overcame Those guerilla ducks and tnrkeys, warlike pigs and other game? and those savage rebel chickens, who would die, but never vield. Whom we faced with deathless valor on so many a Southern field? Though we murmured, though our language was at times a tr;iie queer, Though we had but lutie reverence even for a brigadier, Though we grumbled at the Government with almost every breath, Tet we faced the gray battalions, all undaunted, to the death. We fought them and we killed them, and they killed us ia-return; But we never though to hate them, and we never cared to learn. We met them on the picket lines, with flags of truce between: They were ' Johnnies,'' we were "Yanka, and better irlends were never seen. What anomalies aid contrasts! I recall a day in June, When the world was warm with summer, and the birds vrere all In tune; Peace and beauty all about ns, death and dancer just ahead, On our faces careless courage, in oar hearts a somber uread. Then the skirmish line went forward, and the ouly sounds we heard Were the hum of droning Insects and the carol of a bird; Till, far off, a flash of Are, and a little cloud went by. Like an angel's mantle floating down from out an azure sky. Then a shell went screaming o'er ua, and the air at once was iMe With a mill IOU whispering hornets, swiftly search- ing for a life; , And the birds and Insects fled away before th* "rebel jell," The thunder of the battle, and the furiona fUmes of hell. Other memories come thronging. When our shoulder-straps were new We were nearly all ihe world, but now, alas, we are so few: Then we marched with ringing footsteps, looking gayly to the fore; Now with wistful, dreamy glances, we look back to days of yore. If the spirits of the dead revisit earth for weal or woe. We might fancy they would Join us, these dear friends of long ago. In the second article, ''Historical Colorado," which ie quaintly illustrated, Mrs. Hodges presents n stir- ring account of the progress of that young state within the past twenty- eigbt years. Following this Charles Dimitry writes pleasantly of an "Old House in New Orleans," of national in- terest from having been the scene of a dramatic incident with General Jackson ae the principal character. Nothing in this varied and captivating number how- ever is more entertaining than Paul L. Ford's "History of a Newspaper." It will be news to many that the old Penn- sylvania Gazette, started in 1728, is still flourishing under another name, ia Philadelphia. A. well written article of special importance to all historical Btn- dentsis "The March of the Spaniard* across Illinois," by Edward G. Mason, of the Chicago Historical Society. Iu the Civil War Studies General William Far- rar Smith concludes bis critical papers on "Shilob," pointing out clearly where the blame and the glory of that defeat and victory rested; Gen. Alfred E. Lse writes charmingly of "The Battle of Cross Keys; * and Mr. W. G. Wailer de- scribes his "Trip to Canada with Jeffer- son Davis" in 1867. A feature of great interest in this number, under the gen- eral title of "Reprints," is a series of ex- tracts from the private correspondence of Gibbon, the historian (then Member of Parliament), relating to American af- fairs, 1774-1783. The Notes and other departments overflow with choice read- ing. This May issue is assuredly one of the best numbers of this popular per- iodical ever printed. Typographically it is a model of excellence. Publication office, 30 Lafayette Place, New York city. CONSUMPTION CUBED.—An old physi- cian retired from practice, having had placed in his hands by an East India mis- sionary the formula of a simple vegetable remedy for the speedy auJ permanent dure of consumption, bronchitis, catarrh asthma and all throat and lung affections, also s positive and radical cure for ner- vous debility and all nervous complaints, after having tested its wonderfc I curative powers in thousands of cases, lias felt it his duty to make it known to bia suffer- ing fellows. Actuated by this motive and a desire to relieve human suffering, I will send free of charge, to all who desire it, this recipe, in German, Frencli or Eng- lish, with full directions for preparing and using. Sent by mail by addressing with stamp, naming this paper, W. A. Noyes, 149 Power's Block, Rochester, N. Y. 2093w26aow i m> • — - •' ExcrraMKNT IN TBXAS.—Great *xn l « ment has been caused in the vicinity o.' Paris, Texas, by the remarkable rec iv< r ; of Mr. J. E. Corley, who was so helpless he could not turn in bed, or raiaa his head; everybody said he was dying of consumption. A trial bottle of D.-. JelT Davis in Peekskill. In the spring of 1867, Jefferson Davis was released on bail, after two vents' im- prisonment.' His children were in Mon- treal, and he immediately started to join them, accompanied by his wife, and Mir. W. G. Waller, of Savannah, Georgia, Mr. Waller in the May Magazine of American History, says: "It was thought advisable by his friends that Mr. Davis should not take the through train from New York lest it should be telegraphed ahead, and he be subjectedtoannoyance by the crowds who would gather at the stations to catch sight of the 'Arch Traitor.' It was therefore arranged that we should take the way train to' Pongh- keepsie, and there await the Montreal express. One of a party iu the oat tee ognizedMr. Davis by a defective eye, the sight of whieh bad1>een lost by neu- ralgia incident to a wound received at Beuna Vista. I feared then that his pres- ence on the train might be telegraphed abroad and that be might be embarrassed with curiosity seekers, even if some ar- dent and exuberant patriot might not be about who would think he was doing God's service, and a meritorious act by offering personal violence or indignity. My anxieties were much increased the evidently' unfriendly glances be- stowed on the distinguished traveler, by the party who had recognized him. "I thought under the circumstances, it would be better for us to leave the train at Peekskill, instead of Poqghkeepeie, and there await the Montreal express. As we approached the station, I <5rossed oyer to where Mr- Davis was sitting, and telling him that he waa known, and what I had seen going on, made the ragges- tion. He at first demurred, but at length agreed that it might be wise to do as I proposed, especially as it made no material difference; thus when we reach- ed Peekskill, we left the cat without ©«r absence being noted until the train moved off. We remained a* peekskill for some three hour* without exciting any suspioion .as to Mr. Davis' identity, and finally boarded the through train in safety. I have often thought since, that if the various persons about the station bad had the slightest idea as to who was among them, how different might have been our experience"" 31001 Beer Supplied With Pipes. SanrnKAT, Aprt i ioth, "86.11 o'clock M. * * I have just been told that we shall be able to send some mail home from Castle Island, which is 1,120 miles from New York, in a few days, so I'll begin a idler now for I may not feel so much Hfci it by and by. Yon will be glad to know that "luck" baa favored us. More unarming weather could not be wished lor than we have thus far bad. We have teen out of sight of land since Thursday evening and I have yet to know all about tttat am sickness I was to have off Cape Battens. It was just a little bit rougher about lhat point and a Dumber have been sick, bnt I wenttobed as it was evening and didn't lay awake to get sick. This morning the ocean was as quiet as a lake, only a gentle breeze blowing, the air being balmy like a summer day. "A whale! a whale!" "See! see!'' one now cries. "Wait a minute, I'll a- look." Yea, I've seen it, what aver tt waa and a great volume of water tt throws up in the air, and here oomes a steamer in the distance, too far away to tolltowhat line she belongs; it is only the second one we have met. Last night the steerage passengers en- tertained us for a while on the forward part of the upper deck, with a sort of walk around, something like a Salvation Army parade; one bad an accordi >n, the rest did the singing. The air was warm like a summer evening upon the Hudson, so quiet was the ocean. One never sleeps much the first night out they say, but I managed to get a good share of my usual allowance. The food is fair and they give us plenty of it. I eat almost as much again as Dr. Hart, although be thinks that he is doing well. Hart is good company and everything lookstoa safe and enjoy- able trip. LATEB, 4:15 p. m. We have just bad a fire alarm which brought all the passengers on deck, the pumps were set going and streams of water, &o., &c. It was only an alarm to drill the orew and we were told before- hand so there was no excitement, bnt everybody was interested enough to come on deck and see bow the thing could be done in case we should get afire with nothing but the water, the great ocean to help us out. MONDAY EVKNINO, APBIX 12th. We sighted the first bit of land this morning at 9 o'clock since leaving New York. It is called "Watling's Island," 998 miles from New York. Ob ! how sick I've been since 9 o'clock j esterday morning. At that tinvi I went to the tail and threw my breakfast over to a whale and I've been "wailing" tt ever since, bnt am fast gttting over it and was abletoeat a good, big dinner at 5:30 this p.m. I doubt if I get sick anymore of the way. All but a very few on board have had it and have got it yet—bad. Dt. Hart lost his breakfast also, but re- covered sooner than most of us. At 5 o'clock this afternoon we passed another island called "Bird Rook Is- land," 1,078 miles from New York. We have passed a number of vessels to-day, some yon would think too small and too frail looking to venture so many miles from land. Yesterday they had church at 11 o'clock. The captain officiated and read the Episcopal service, not over fif- teen or twenty were r.-< ?!e to be present I was not amongst tht> number. I was not so sick, however, but that I was able to look in for a moment through the cabin window. I must now close for we ate not many miles from Castle Island and I must have it ready to go, if we make a landing. With love to all, Yours. ED. CARIBBEAN SEA, APBIL 15th. We did not stop at Castle Island, so I must mail this at Aspinwall, where we will arrive to-morrow. We have had very little sea-sickness since Monday aboard the steamer. Hart and myself both are well and have found lots o' nothingtodo. There are many pleasant people on the ship and it takes but a few hourstobecome acquainted. E. G. H. How Baking Powders are Hade. While rival companies are disputing as to what ingredients are to be found in the "best baking powder," the public will be interested in the following difl- nition of these now indispensable articles, as given by Appleton's Cyclopedia, the acknowledged American authority: "The best baking powders are com- posed of bitartrate of potash (cream of tartar), tartaric acid, carbonate of am- monia and sods bi-oarbonate, bound together by a little starch." We have just received the first num- ber of a new story paper, the New York Waverly, together with a beautiful oil picture in twelve colors entitled "Even- ing Devotion." The publication is first- class in every reapec*, well filled with serial and short stories, poems, *c by the beet anthers. Rs general make np and illustrations are far ahead of similar publications, and judging from the first number its stories will prove of thrilling interest. With number seven the pub- lishers give away ibe picture Evening Devotion, size 20x28, which is well worth a place in any home. The sub- scription price is $1.00 for four months, $1 50 for six months, or 83 00 per year. It can also be bad of all news agents at six cents per eopy. - TUB IMPENDING DANGER —The recent statistics of the number of deaths show that a large majority die with consumpr tion. Yon will find it for sale by Thomas A. Whitney. Price 50c. and $1. THE EXCITEMENT NOT QVJSB—The rush at Thomas A. Do yon remember comrades how we fought and overcame

Those guerilla ducks and tnrkeys war l ike pigs and other game

and those savage rebel chickens who would die but never vield

Whom we faced with deathless valor on so many a Southern field

Though we murmured though our language was at times a triie queer

Though we had but lutie reverence even for a brigadier

Though we grumbled at the Government with almost every breath

Tet we faced the gray battalions all undaunted to the death

We fought them and we killed them and they killed us ia-return

But we never though to hate them and we never cared to learn

We met them on the picket lines with flags of truce between

They were Johnnies we were Yanka and better irlends were never seen

What anomalies a i d contrasts I recall a day in June

When the world was warm with summer and the birds vrere all In tune

Peace and beauty all about ns death and dancer just ahead

On our faces careless courage in oar hearts a somber uread

Then the skirmish line went forward and the ouly sounds we heard

Were the hum of droning Insects and the carol of a bird

Till far off a flash of Are and a little cloud went by

Like an angels mantle floating down from out an azure sky

Then a shell went screaming oer ua and the air at once was iMe

With a mill IOU whispering hornets swiftly searchshying for a life

And the birds and Insects fled away before th rebel jell

The thunder of the battle and the furiona fUmes of hell

Other memories come thronging When our shoulder-straps were new

We were nearly all ihe world but now alas we are so few

Then we marched with ringing footsteps looking gayly to the fore

Now with wistful dreamy glances we look back to days of yore

If the spirits of the dead revisit earth for weal or woe

We might fancy they would Join us these dear friends of long ago

ExcrraMKNT IN TBXASmdashGreat xnllaquo ment has been caused in the vicinity o Paris Texas by the remarkable rec ivlt r of Mr J E Corley who was so helpless he could not turn in bed or raiaa his head everybody said he was dying of consumption A trial bottle of D-

JelT Davis in Peekski l l In the spring of 1867 Jefferson Davis

was released on bail after two vents imshyprisonment His children were in Monshytreal and he immediately started to join them accompanied by his wife and Mir W G Waller of Savannah Georgia Mr Waller in the May Magazine of American History says It was thought advisable by his friends that Mr Davis should not take the through train from New York lest it should be telegraphed ahead and he be subjected to annoyance by the crowds who would gather at the stations to catch sight of the Arch Traitor It was therefore arranged that we should take the way train to Pongh-keepsie and there await the Montreal express One of a party iu the oat tee ognizedMr Davis by a defective eye the sight of whieh bad1gteen lost by neushyralgia incident to a wound received at Beuna Vista I feared then that his presshyence on the train might be telegraphed abroad and that be might be embarrassed with curiosity seekers even if some arshydent and exuberant patriot might not be about who would think he was doing Gods service and a meritorious act by offering personal violence or indignity My anxieties were much increased braquo the evidently unfriendly glances beshystowed on the distinguished traveler by the party who had recognized him

I thought under the circumstances it would be better for us to leave the train at Peekskill instead of Poqghkeepeie and there await the Montreal express As we approached the station I lt5rossed oyer to where Mr- Davis was sitting and telling him that he waa known and what I had seen going on made the ragges-tion He at first demurred but at length agreed that it might be wise to do as I proposed especially as it made no material difference thus when we reachshyed Peekskill we left the cat without copylaquor absence being noted until the train moved off We remained a peekskill for some three hour without exciting any suspioion as to Mr Davis identity and finally boarded the through train in safety I have often thought since that if the various persons about the station bad had the slightest idea as to who was among them how different might have been our experience
