TRANSCRIPT

If you want to change the world, focus on leaders.

If you want to change leaders, focus on them when they’re young.

Sample Session

• We’ll be watching a 90-minute club session that has been compressed into a 30-minute video.

(Please excuse us for some of the poor audio sections in the taping.)

Koaching Is Key

1. The Koach interacts directly with 4-6 Leaders (students) in a Team.

2. The Koach is NOT primarily the leader, but the Leader Developer.

3. Good Koaching is the most difficult and most important role in KidLead.

Koach Qualities

1. A leader with experience (adult SIS)

2. Enjoys the age group

3. Experience with the age group

4. Teachable (willing to always improve)

5. Available (15 minutes before/after rule)

6. Emotionally intelligent

Koaching Is Key: 9 Fine Traits1. Your primary role is coach, not teacher

or leader. Examples: a. “Do you know how much time you have left?” vs.

“Hurry, you only have 1 minute!”

b. “How can you find the time (or instructions)? Vs. “The time is… The instructions are…”

c. “Team Leader, is all of your team engaged?” vs. “Bobby, pay attention.”

d. “What is another way you could _____?” Vs. “What you need to do is _______.”

e. “Team Leader, who can tell you…?” vs. “Trainer, can you explain…?”

f. “What do you think of that idea?” vs. “That’s a good idea, let’s do that.”

Koaching Is Key: 9 Fine Traits

2. Limits talking to 25%.

3. 75% of talking is Socratic (asking strategic questions).

Great Questions…

A. Focus on the topic; avoid rabbit trail questions.•What is one thing you learned about leading from that activity? •Vs. How did you enjoy that activity?

B. Consider options; don’t just settle for one good answer.•That’s good. Let’s think of 4 more ways we could have accomplished this. •Vs. Wow, great answer. Okay, the next question is….

Great Questions…C. Look for teachable moments; great finds are found in failures.•We lost the competition. What can we learn from that? •Vs. Oh bummer, you didn’t do well. We’ll do better next time.

D. Avoid “yes/no” and rhetorical answers.•What are some ways we can improve next round? •Vs. Do you think we can do better next time?

Great Questions…

E. Keep the feedback of people positive.•What’s one thing Karli did well as the leader? •Vs. What should Karli have done as the leader?

F. Convey value for Leaders’ opinions.•What do you think about how our team did in this activity? •Vs. I think we did well, but we could have done better.

Koaching Is Key: 8 Great Skills

4. During an activity, focuses on the Team Leader (TL whisperer).

A. Physically beside TL. (Move!)

B. 2-4 comments per activity.

C. Team awareness, but TL focused.

D. Don’t let your focus on not talking too much, disengage you from the process.

5. Be a thermostat; not a thermometer.

Koaching Is Key: 8 Great Skills

6. Quality control during activities.

7. Facilitates good group dynamics (over talking-quiet / dishonoring / not paying attention / “hijacking”)

8. Provides “space” for the Team Leader to lead effectively.

The Koach Minute: Good, Better, Best1. One thing you did well (good): “I

heard you say to your team ____. Nice job.”

2. One thing to consider so you’ll do better next time. “I think it will be more effective if you____. So just consider it.”

3. What I think you did best was… “Wow, what I liked best about your leading

was _________. Excellent. Keep it up!”

5 Most Common Koaching Errors• 1. Taking over (You’re NOT the leader.

You’re the Leader developer.)

• 2. Teaching/lecturing (> 5 sentences together) vs. Socratic discovery.

• 3. Not focusing on the Team Leader in activities (2-4 “whispers” per minute).

• 4. Allowing poor group dynamics: (PhD: passivity, hijacking, distraction).

• 5. Poor quality control (Trainer extension).

Graduate Level Koaching

• When Leaders become familiar with methods and skills, the tendency is for Koaches to become passive. DON’T DO IT! Make good leaders even better. Hone your skills:– Ask more probing questions.– Affirm good Leader decisions.– Raise self-awareness. (What were you

thinking when you decided to… ? How do you think it went? How did you do?)

– How else could you have done that?

When Possible…Have your best Koaches mentor others.

Train new Koaches by assigning a partner for shadowing/observing.

Allow Koaches to periodically observe other Koaches in general.

Video Koaches and review their work

with them.
