If you don’t know, find out. HOW? __________________________. ASK QUESTIONS. Particle Physics for Everyone – A Close-up of the “Particle Zoo”. Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics. By Beth Beiersdorf (Pronounced “By-ers-dorf”). What is Physics?. - PowerPoint PPT Presentation

TRANSCRIPT

  • Bringing New Physics into the Middle School Classroom

    Beth Beiersdorf

    University of Notre Dame

  • Goals

Introduce 6th-8th grade girls to particle physics concepts

Demonstrate that science IS done by women

Show that physics can be fun

  • If you dont know, find out.

    __________________________ASK QUESTIONS

  • Particle Physics for Everyone A Close-up of the Particle ZooExpanding Your Horizons in Science and MathematicsBy Beth Beiersdorf(Pronounced By-ers-dorf)

  • What is Physics?Physics deals with the way the universe works at the most basic levelThis means that the same physics laws apply to a snowflake falling, the eruption of a volcano, the explosion of a distant star and the flight of a butterfly

  • Then, what is Particle Physics?Particle Physics deals with the smallest, most basic particles of the universeProtons and neutrons contain particles called quarks and force carriers. Electrons are particles called leptons. What is the smallest thing you know of?The atom is made of even smaller particles.

  • Watching the Animals Move You will need these materials: PartnerFlashlightPiece of clear plastic optical fiber

Follow these directions: Shine the flashlight into one end of the fiber.Look at the other end. What do you see?Now twist the fiber any way you want to and shine the light in one end. What do you see at the other end? (Do not bend the fiber completely.)

    __________________________ASK QUESTIONS

  • How do we see the animals? You will need these materials: One shoe box lid, turned upside downCups to hold the shoe box lid upMagnetic marblesOrdinary marblesIron filings

Follow these directions: 1. Place box lid upside down on the table and insert cups at each corner to raise it just enough so that any of your marbles can roll under it. 2. Sprinkle iron filings in the lid so as to cover all of it. This is your simulated detector. 3. Roll a magnetic marble rapidly under this simulated detector. What do you see?4. Roll an ordinary marble rapidly under this simulated detector. What do you see?

  • Seeing one of the Animals

  • Lessons Learned

Middle school girls can be motivated to learn about particle physics

Physics does not have to be intimidating

Girls appreciate seeing that women are involved in physics research
