• InternationalInternetbandwidth,akeyfactorforprovidinghigh-speedInternetaccesstoagrowingnumberofInternetusershasgrownexponentiallyoverthelastfiveyears,from11’000Gbit/sin2006,tocloseto 80’000Gbit/sin2011.

• Disparities between regions in terms of available Internet bandwidth per Internet user remain, with on average almost 90’000 bit/s of bandwidth per user in Europe, compared with 2’000 bit/s per user in Africa.

• While people in developed countries usually usemobile-broadbandnetworks in addition to afixed-broadband connection, mobile-broadband is often the only access method available to people indeveloping countries.

• Europeleadsinbroadbandconnectivity,withfixed- and mobile-broadband penetrationreaching26%and54%,respectively.

• A number of developing countries have been able to leverage mobile-broadband technologies to overcome infrastructure barriers and provide high-speed Internet servicestopreviouslyunconnectedareas.InAfrica, mobile-broadband penetration has reached 4%, compared with less than 1% for fixed-broadbandpenetration.

• The world’s top broadband economies are from Europe and Asia and the Pacific. Inthe Republic of Korea mobile-broadband penetrationexceeds90%.

Broadband – speed matters

Fixed-broadband subscriptions, by speed, early 2011

• While almost all fixed-broadband connections in theRepublic of Korea provide speeds equal to, orabove10Mbit/s,broadbandusersinGhana,Mongolia,OmanandVenezuelaarelimitedtobroadbandspeeds below 2 Mbit/s.

• AnInternetconnectionwithaspeedof256kbit/s limitsthetypesofapplicationsandservicesthatInternet users can enjoy. Service providers for data-intensive services, such as Video-on-Demand,recommend a minimum speed of 2 Mbit/s.

• Advertisedandrealspeedscandiffersubstantially.Insomecountries,regulatoryauthoritiesmonitorthespeedandqualityofbroadbandservicesandobligeoperatorstoprovideaccuratequality-of-serviceinformation to end users.

• The ITU ICT Price Basket 1 shows that between 2008 and 2010 ICT services have become more affordable and relative prices came down by anaverageof18%,globally.

• The steepest price drop occurred in developing countries,wherefixed-broadbandpricesdroppedby52.2%.

• In developing countries, mobile-cellular prices, which have substantiallydroppedoverthelastdecade, fellbya further22%.The2010 mobile-cellular sub-basket represented on average 11.4% of monthlyGNIpercapita, comparedto 2% in developed countries.

• ICT services continue to be more affordable in high-income economies and less affordable in low-income economies. By 2010,the cost of ICT services averaged 1.5%ofGNIpercapitaindevelopedcountries,comparedwith17%ofGNIper capita in developing countries.

• In31countries—allofthemhighlyindustrialized economies — anentry-level broadband connectioncostsonaveragetheequivalentof1% or less of averagemonthlyGNIper capita, while in 19 countries — most of them least developed countries — a broadband connection costs on average more than 100% of monthlyGNIpercapita.
