The settlements name Ilulissat means ‘icebergs’. You have a guided Green- landic culture and history walk of this isolated frontier town in the afternoon. You visit the local church, the fishermen in the harbour and the authentic hunters at their trading market Braedtet. Cod, Salmon, seal, reindeer, caribou, Musk Ox are on sale here. Greenlandic people most- ly lived in small settlements along the coast until today’s generation. After breakfast this morning you head out by boat to the traditional settlement of Ooseestsut which lies in an idyllic set- ting and is not accessible by road. Even with its tiny population it has a its own church, school and restaurant. Its struc- tures reflect Dutch colonial times when Dutch whale hunters and their families were the principal residents. This even- ing a wonderful tour highlight is a mid- night cruise on Ice Fjord. The midnight sun lasts from the end of May until the end of July. Sailing at night with the sun still above the horizon is a fascinating and unique experience as the icebergs are illuminated in a display of pastel colours. After breakfast you fly from Reykjavik

glorious renaissance treasure, immortal-

ized in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, is now a

UNESCO World heritage site. Originally

a 15th C stronghold presiding over the

entrance to the Baltic Sea and later a royal

residence, Kronborg has been carefully

restored to provide an insight into its dra-

ma and history over the centuries. You

might also choose to visit the Louisiana

Art Museum which is close to Kronborg

and included on your Copenhagen Card.

Arrive in Dubai and connect with your

flight to Copenhagen where you are greet-

Roskilde

Take a train to Roskilde with your tour

leader this morning to visit the Viking

Ship Museum. A local guide accompanies

you through this working museum which

showcases several original Viking vessels

from the 11th century and ongoing archae-

ological work. Specialist exhibitions

demonstrate Viking hand crafts such as

wood carving, rope making and metal

work. In the afternoon you have a guided

city walk in Copenhagen to see the Little

Mermaid, the Amalienborg Palace and the

Tivoli Gardens.

Today is free to enjoy the relaxed charm

of Copenhagen. Your tour leader is on

hand to help you. You may wish to visit

fashionable districts such as Christiana,

tional Museum. Also recommended is the

Danish Design Centre. You have a Co-

penhagen Card included which allows free

transport and many free admissions.

Kronborg Castle

Take a train to Kronborg Castle for a

guided tour ‘In Hamlet’s Footsteps’. Situ-

ated in the Danish town of Helsingor this

Copenhagen to the Faroe Islands

Fly to the Faroes Islands today and trans-

fer to Torshavn, founded in the 10th cen-

tury and named after the Norse God of

thunder-Thor. It is the largest town on the

fascinating Faroes, a small volcanic archi-

pelago between Norway, Iceland and

Scotland. It belongs to the Kingdom of

Denmark. The Faroes have been rated by

National Geographic as some of the most

outstandingly beautiful islands in the

world for their natural landscapes and

unspoilt beauty. In summer the landscape

turns an astonishingly lush green. The

islands have a language and culture all of

their own with inhabitants descending

largely from Scandinavia and Scotland.

On arrival you check in to your hotel and

set out on a walk of the harbour and his-

torical old town core with a local guide.

tional historical museum of the Faroe

Islands this morning which displays Far-

oese artefacts from the Viking age to last

century. It also has an open air site in

Hoyvik which showcases a nineteenth

century farm house and outbuildings.

You also visit the Nordic House and the

Art Museum.

to take a local optional tour or to visit

Gongin- the narrow, picturesque main

street with its 19th century houses. There

is also an historic 16th C fort at Skansin.

Faroe Islands to Reykjavik

Fly from Torshavn to Reykjavik, the

capital of Iceland. Here you head off on

a city orientation tour. See the old town

centre, Iceland’s parliament, the cathe-

dral, the pretty harbour and the Laugar-

dalur swimming pool and the city’s land-

mark sight Hallgrimskirkja, the Church

of Iceland. Visits to Reykjavik’s excel-

lent National Museum and the Asmun-

dur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum pro-

vide a cultural insight in to this intri-

guing country and its people.

Set out this morning on Iceland’s famous

Golden Circle circuit, a 300km round

trip of this dramatic island forged by fire

and ice. A highlight is the Fontana geo-

thermal steam baths on the edge of

beautiful Lake Laugarvatn, where you

have your admission and towels includ-

ed. Awe-inspiring sights include the

magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, the ex-

ploding hot springs of Geysir and stun-

ning Pingvellir National Park, site of the

Viking parliament and over one thou-

sand years of history. Be prepared for an

early start and a thrilling day.

Continue on your southern route around

Iceland to Skaftafel as you see wide

plains formed by glacial rivers and the

dramatic sea cliffs of Dyrholaey. Stop at

the thundering waterfalls of Sel-

On a clear day you have unforgettable

views of Hekla and Eyjafjallajokull vol-

canoes and the pretty village of Vik.

Park which is one of Iceland’s outstand-

ing regions of natural beauty. Here you

take the Blue Ice experience, walking

Visit the highlands today travelling along

rugged tracks to Landmannalaugar, an

area of astonishing beauty surrounded by

rhyolite mountains. It is a surreal land-

scape of deep valleys and sculptured

moss-covered mountains mostly formed

by volcanic eruptions under glaciers dur-

ing the ice age. You take a pleasant walk

and have a picnic style lunch included as

there are no restaurants or cafes in this

natural wilderness region.

Complete your Golden Circle round trip

today via the coast, stopping at Kleifar-

vatn Lake and Krysuvik hot springs. In
