F O C U S“When the going gets tough, the tough get going” goes an oldadage. Last month was an eventful one for the whole nation, with the preparations for Commonwealth games and theAyodhya verdict coming through. What was inspiring to seewas the new face of India. Leaving the disappointments over thecommonwealth games preparations, there is a desire to excel, embark and prove ourselves. It is this desire when converted topositive attitude makes us successful. The Ayodhya verdict sawthe whole nation come together, calling for peace. This episode taught us that change is the only thing

constant and is inevitable. What becomes important is thatdesire should get converted into an attitude. We should learnto leave negatives behind and move forward towards a newbeginning. With this positive thought, let’s begin this issue of IBSAF

World. We have had a busy two months, with the BOG, theIBSAF Awards for SIP-2010 and the Best Teacher awardstaking place, apart from all the regular meets, outings andinteractions. You will find excerpts and photographs of allthese events in this issue. The BOG meeting for the first timewas held at the IBS Hyderabad campus. The members apartfrom discussions on our future course also took time out toenjoy, interact, look around the campus and spend time withjuniors. Alumni meets were held at London and Singapore, photos and excerpts of which are presented in this issue. TheDubai meet on September 24 was a huge success withmembers coming all the way from Muscat and other nearbyplaces. We would bring you all the details and photographs ofthis event in the next issue. In the meantime keep sending your insights and ideas to

us and we are sure to become the best and the largest alumninetwork. We have already crossed the 25000 mark. We haveintroduced the mentorship program and have received anencouraging response. You are welcome to both – opt forbecoming a mentor to guide your juniors or request for amentor to guide you! Just send in your request [email protected] then,Harsh [email protected]

IBS Gurgaon (’07) is a chemistry graduate from MagadhUniversity and is working with Tecnova Pvt. Ltd as aConsultant. He is based out of Gurgaon. He is also pursuinghis MS (Consulting Management) from BITS Pilani.Amit has worked with several NGOs where he managedprojects which required skills in networking, resourcehandling and project management. He was associated withCII and Ford India during his internship. He loves interacting with people and is an insatiable readerwith interest ranging from Indian philosophy, englishliterature to branding and strategic books. He loves listeningto music and watching cricket. You can reach him at [email protected]

The IBS ExperienceI remember my first interaction withIBS. Things come alive when I thinkabout my MBA days spent at IBSGurgaon. We had a good mix ofstudents from diverse educationalbackground. The induction classesbefore the beginning of first semesterreally helped me to get into the skinof MBA and gain confidence.I think IBS is one B-school which

has an active, participating andhappening alumni fraternity. Theconcepts of dedicated magazine,Alumni portal, Alumni parties,Lounge in city are excellent. Stillthere is a need for interactionbetween the alumni and currentbatches of IBS through seminars, conferences, lectures where alumnican contribute to their alma materand form a strong network.Patience is the KeyFrom my experiences in life, I havelearnt patience. The key to

everything ispatience; you geta chicken byhatching the egg,not smashing it.So practice

patience fromtoday and don’trun through lifeso fast that youforget what youhave been andwhere are yougoing.A n o t h e r

thing that Iwould like toemphasize on isbeing positive. No one has everinjured theireyesight lookingat the brighterside of things. It is not what

life takes awayfrom you that

counts. It iswhat youmake of whatis left withyou. Life is agr inds tonebut whetherit grinds usdown orpolishes usup dependson us.The funnysideThere aremany funny incidences that occurwith me on a regular basis and I haveseriously not been able to overcomeit. I ride my bike most of timeswithout checking fuel in it, readwrong paper for the examination andget shock of my life, get confused withtrain timings and reach station at thewrong time.

Life is more than a degree orsalaryDon’t take your life on single trackof either study or Job. Dosomething creative in your life orsome social welfare. That issomething which will completeyou not the degree or salary at theend of the month in your account.Take life as it comesLive each day as it is your last. Itmeans taking life on day-to-daybasis.Balancing personal andprofessional lifeI am a complete family man. I feel ifone doesn’t carry family atworkplace and work issues whenone reaches home, there will neverbe a question on work-life balance.IdealI have no such ideal but have beeninspired by many personalities in myLife. My mother being one of them.

Swami Vivekananda, MahatmaGandhi, George Bernard Shaw, andDeepak Chopra to name a few.Parting thoughtsWoods are lovely dark and deepBut I have promises to keepAnd miles to go before I sleepMiles to go before I sleep

Gudimetla in November 2009. Myhusband works with Oracle as aPrincipal Software Consultant. Iam now living in Dallas with myhusband. The person who has influencedyou mostCan’t point out one personactually…the list is endless…learnt from my teachers, friends, roommates, seniors, juniors…everyone has something you canlearn from…IBSAFIt is very interesting to see theAlumni meets that go onsuccessfully…shows everyone’sattachment to their IBS friends…the IBSAF magazine keeps usconnected…Which role according to you ismore satisfying/challenging -homemaker or a career womanWell…that’s a tricky question…bothhave their own goods and bads…andequally challenging…but I can sayfor sure that I don’t regret taking abreak in my career and become ahomemaker. What does success mean toyou? Two simple words… “BeingHappy”.HobbiesWell, I am a trained carnatic singer.Apart from singing, I enjoyreading, cooking and knitting.

IBS Chennai (00) works withInfosys Technlogies as a ProjectManager in Hyderabad. He can be reached [email protected]

I started out as a Release Engineer atSallieMae Solutions at Bangalore, presently called SCT Sunguard. Afterthat, I moved into Fractal Analyticsat Mumbai as a Software DesignEngineer for close to two years.Though none of the 2 jobs paid well, the learning was okay.My first break came close to 3

years after starting out. That’swhen I joined TCS, Mumbai assoftware engineer. Those were thedays when B.Tech’s and BE’s werethe most sought after. Sciencegraduates were generally not hiredby IT companies, though thingshave changed since then.My first job in a leadership role

happened when I was offered aposition by Satyam at theirHyderabad office. This was by far mybest job to date as it exposed me tocustomers for the first time ever. Myjob required me to travel extensivelyand the experience enriched me andreinforced my belief that I belongedhere, in the big league of companies. After close to four-and-a-half

years at Satyam, I moved to Infosysas a Project Manager in their EAIpractice. It has been about a yearand I manage Integration projectsin the telecom space.IBSAF experienceNot experienced much of IBSAFyet. Participated in one alumnimeet in 2008 but have not been aregular by any means. Themagazine is a good way to keepabreast of happenings at IBS,though.Balancing ActI do not carry my work home. That’s probably the best way tobalance the two aspects of life. Ifthere is a burning issue that needsattention, I prefer to work late orstay back at office rather thancarry that work home and remainhooked onto the telephone andInternet for hours into the night.Seldom has any official problem

been solved from home. Finally, weekends belong to family andfriends. This has been a keylearning over the last 10 years.Hard work Vs Smart workThey are not mutually exclusive.Doing something well requireshard work. At the same time, youhave to market yourself. Yourmanagers have to know that youdelivered a piece of work on timeand within budgets. You need tocommunicate regularly and that’swhere smartness comes into thepicture.Of course, some people survive

on stealing credit meant for otherpeople, but they are generally foundwanting in the long run.HobbiesI indulge myselfwith crosswords

Giridharan B

and video gaming. I also lovereading Dilbert. I have my owncollection of strips running intohundreds of pages.Stress bustingI love driving. My car is my mostprized possession. My workplace isabout 35 kms from my place ofresidence. I love driving back homein the evenings, irrespective oftraffic conditions.Your message for buddingMBA’s1. Recession is a state of mind andit will change with time.

2. There is no such thing calledinstant success.

3. Success is not about winning. Itis all about handling losses onthe way to winning.4. If everything seems tocome your way, you are inthe wrong lane.Plans for futureAll the plans in theimmediate futurerevolve around my sonand his schooling, which is expected tostart in the next 6months. In fact, mywife and I are veryexcited aboutthis new phasein our lives. My motto is

We used to do edutainmentactivities to make learning better. All the mentors are like friends andare always ready to clear thedoubts. I really miss the time I havespent at IBS Mumbai.Case study methodologyIndeed a proven and effectivemethodology for classroomteaching. In over two years westudied more than 150 case studies. But this is just half of the effortsmade by the IBS research team.

These case studies perfectly gelwith the concepts being taught inclassroom teaching. Thismethodology has helped us inbetter understanding of complextopics/concepts.Perfect lifeI believe in living my life inpresent but am prepared for thefuture as well. If nothing worksfor me in bad times then I just letit pass by and I always get a wayout. I always enjoy my life andthe current situation I am in. W ake up at 6 am…getr e a d y … h a v ebreakfast…and reach

office by 9/9:30. At office hear yourboss give out targets to you. Allday long you make sincere effortsto please him/her and do your jobefficiently. At the end of the day, when you may or may not havehad lunch or even a short break, you are asked about “thenumbers”. If you have achievedthem you are saved for the day. Ifnot, the targets are doubled for thenext day. Your so-called “friends”at office are only looking foropportunities to backstab you andstep over you at the time ofappraisals. When you reach homeat 10 at night you are not left withany energy to mingle with yourfamily or friends. This is the lifetoday’s society has designed foryou. And then you sit down and

think — is it all worth it? Yourhealth goes for a toss, your sociallife is gone and your power tothink for yourself is eaten away.

You are so used to doing things theway you are told, that you juststop questioning things and youlearn to accept anything and

everything, whether or not itmakes sense to you. Then you wonder for whom are

you doing all this? To make someorganization richer? Is it reallyworth it? Considering all this wequit our jobs, bid those heftypackages goodbye and now we areon our own. To start with, we haveopened a music institute atBanashankari, by the name of JBMusicals, bringing forward thestory of this renowned institute toBangalore from Mysore. We are alsocoming up with specialty tourismshortly, by the name of Prana.Life, like this, is also not easy.

We face financial crunchestypically, slog equally hard orprobably more than we used to inthe corporate, but at the end of theday we have the satisfaction thatwe are doing this for ourselves, andnot to make anyone else rich.We have room for creativity, we

are the decision makers. If somethingdoes not make sense to us, we drop it.We take suggestions, guidance, butapply it as and when we want to. Wehave time for ourselves, our family. We are proud that we have utilizedour education to build our characterand acumen, and not merely to seekjobs. We do not lead a mechanical, monotonous life. We work onweekends and have an off onweekdays, because that works out forus. While most people suffer from‘Monday Blues’, we celebrate that‘It’s Monday’!! There are hurdles, butit is exciting. For those who thinkthat they should enter the corporateworld and gain some experiencebefore they venture out on their own,we would just like to say that onceyou are there, you might never beable to come out leaving the hugepackages, security and comfort. If you want to be an

entrepreneur, the time is now! Ifnot now, then when?!!

Life at IBS – a great balancingactIBS for me was the gateway toplunge into the maddeningcorporate world. Theexperiences that I have gatheredin those 2 years help me to sailthrough the stress conditionstoday. Life after all, is a greatbalancing act. This is even truerfor a working woman who needsto juggle family and work fronton a day-to-day basis. It wasnever easy then to balance therigorous class lectures andassignments along with theextracurricular activities – likebeing a part of the editorialteam, member of the festcommittee etc. However, I firmlybelieve that all those helped mein being what I am today andtaught me to balance andprioritize work and life moreeffectively. I personally considerthose to be the greatesttakeaways from IBS apart fromthe management insights. Theexperiences and learning at IBShave had significant influence onmy thought process and way ofliving.Life after IBSMy journey after IBS has beenquite interesting andchallenging. I consider myself tobe fortunate to be a part of two ofthe BIG 4s in last three years. After my campus placement withPricewaterhouseCooper inTransfer Pricing, I ventured fora short period into theinvestment banking arena atHSBC and then moved inTransfer Pricing with Deloitte. The last three years wereextremely fulfilling. I believeconsultancy is a very differentball game wherein the learningcurve is constantly moving

upward. Every new assignmentunfolds a new challenge andsomething new to learn. Moreoverin consultancy one always has tobe proactive in upgrading his/herskill sets as otherwise there isalways a probability of beingantiquated.Life’s Mantra – Give time toyourself and invest in thingsyou love to doI believe it is very important toinvest a lot of time in things oneloves to do. Work takes away mostof our time and we are most of thetime complaining of stress, boredom, monotonous work lifeetc. Unfortunately most of ourenergy goes in regretting thingswe cannot help. However, we allcan thrive to lessen these regretsby doing things which makes ushappy, be it a frequent long driveor a music lesson or a good read. This is my only distressing mantraand I strongly endorse it amongstfriends. These also help my mindto relax and encourage out-of-the-box thinking.Take life as it comes – so enjoyevery moment without beingbothered about what is in storefor futureWell let me give a disclaimer that Idid not mean that one should bereluctant and enjoy life withoutprioritizing or working hard. All Iam trying to harp on is one shouldbe persevering and give best shotfor every aspect of life but shouldnot worry about the fallouts toomuch as the future is not really inour hands. Well it might soundlike a cliché message of a self-development book. But in realitythis works for me. Not that it iseasy to follow this mantra alwaysbut if one can adhere to it, it can

work wonders. On the job frontthis philosophy can actuallyreduce a lot of stress andeventually produce a betteroutput.Striving for that next level isimportantSaying this, one should alsocontinuously strive forachieving something more inlife. The Pepsi tag “Yeh DilMange More” is a brilliant wayto express this thought. I wouldlike to quote Mr. Chetan Bhagat–“To us, having materiallandmarks is success and rightlyso. When you have grown upwhere money constraints forceeveryday choices, f inancialfreedom is a big achievement. But it isn’t the purpose of life. Ifthat was the case, Mr. Ambaniwould not show up for work.Shah Rukh Khan would stay athome and not dance anymore.Steve Jobs won’t be workinghard to make a better iPhone, ashe sold Pixar for bil l ions ofdollars already. Why do they doit? What makes them come towork every day? They do itbecause it makes them happy. They do it because it makes themfeel alive. Just getting betterfrom current levels feels good. Ifyou study hard, you can improveyour rank. If you make an effortto interact with people, you willdo better in interviews. If youpractice, your cricket will getbetter. You may also know thatyou cannot become Tendulkar, yet. But you can get to the nextlevel.”Therefore for me I feel that the

key to live a fulfilling life isalways – to strive for that nextlevel.

The hardest thing about getting news fromthe Net is keeping up with it. First there werebrowser-based bookmarks, but you had tocheck them all the time. Then the RSS reader

was invented, which brought the news home by asking you to subscribeto feeds from your favorite sites. Invariably, they stacked up, unread. Then popurls (it rhymes with popular) cracked the code by pullingtogether up-to-the-moment headlines from the biggest and mostpopular news and opinion sites, blogs and vlogs onto one giant Webpage for you to graze through. There’s nothing to remember to checkor install. It’s the perfect homepage.

A long, long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, Google was just twograd students at Stanford with a smart idea for search technology. Today’ssearch whiz kid is Stephen Wolfram, one of the biggest brains on theplanet — and he’s got the new idea. Wolfram has developed a searchengine that can actually understand your questions and try to figure outanswers. It takes some doing to learn how to talk to Wolfram|Alpha, butit’s well worth it.

The old way of cooking at home includedfiguring out what you wanted to eat, lookingup the recipe in a cookbook, buying theingredients and whipping the meal up.Here’s the Supercook way: Open your fridgeand pantry, type the ingredients you have

into the site’s search bar and stand back. Supercook will look throughits database of 300,000-plus recipes and spit out the ones that match. The result? You can start cooking right away, using food that wouldotherwise spoil. It’s a painless alternative to traditional menu-planningand a great way to find new recipes and economize at the same time.

Visuwords is a thesaurus re-imagined as a toy. It asks youto think of a word and thenturns that word into auniverse of bouncing, rotating, vibrating meaning by pulling related wordsinto an orbit around it. The words careen off one another like balls on abilliard table until they settle down, at which point you can set them inmotion again — or choose a new word. It’s highly addictive, especially forEnglish majors.

I was hired as an intern of Lakshya Consulting, which provides value-addedadvisory and consulting services i.e. business valuations, business planspreparation/vetting, economic feasibility reports, project financing, fund

raising, VC & PE advisory, etc. My entire journey was full of practical learningsand experience of the field of corporate finance.Throughout this internship, I accomplished many things – from developing afunctional analysis report for a transfer pricing assignment, to acquiringknowledge about the various methods to calculate the arms length price, toadvanced financial analytics, complicated beta calculations and businessvaluations using the DCF methodology. I was designing and working onvaluation models, along with their finer nuances, and learning the practicalaspects of finance which I hitherto only studied during my college days.Lakshya Consulting’s strict quality standards made me learn how thingsshould be done in a consulting firm. It made me realize how even small thingsmake a big difference to the final work. I learnt to focus very strongly onstandardization, language, completion, essence, etc., when it comes to reportwriting.I was very lucky to attend Sankalp 2010 (Social Enterprise Awards &Investment Forum) at Taj Lands End during my internship, as a LakshyaConsulting representative. Here, I got my first brush with the corporateculture and etiquette. I got an opportunity to meet and interact with top levelexecutives and investors.I would like to thank the CEO of Lakshya Consulting, Mr. Pratik Singhi, whoincidentally is also an IBS-Mumbai alumnus of the 1999 batch, an incrediblementor for continuous guidance and my colleagues, Anand Prakash andSrikant Adhikarla.Vikas GoplaniIBS MumbaiClass of 2011

My project at ITCwas titled, “Anevaluation of thew h o l e s a l echannel of PCPbusiness of ITCLtd”. The project sogiven covered a widerange of research study. According tothe project, my task was tounderstand the wholesale channel ofdistribution focusing on ITCdistributor, wholesaler, retailers andthen the ultimate consumer. Thetask involved an in-depth study ofthe PCP product variants, theirsupply according to their demand, and demand in comparison withHUL & P&G. The next step was tobuild the strategies to improve thesale of the products and implementthem at various retail and wholesaleoutlets. From the 2nd day of my SIP I was

send to the wholesale distributoroffice and was told to gather all therelevant information about thepersonal care products. For which Ihad to spend time in the distributorwarehouse and had to monitor eachand every variant. For a week I wasmade to understand the variousvariants. After that for 4 weeks Iwas sent with the differentwholesalers to understand theactual market position of theproducts. This involved visitingeach and every wholesale outlet andknowing their problems andsuggestions about the product. Itwas a great practical experience andtaught me things which no theorysession could have. All together it was on excellent

I started my internship onFebruary 15, 2010, with“Smart Careers”. Theorganization prepares studentsfor competitive exams foradmission at undergraduatelevel. I started with counselingsessions; I counseled andenrolled many students in their schools and alsovisited their homes.I was handling 150 students at two centers.

This boosted my confidence level and managerialskills.I came to know how a business entity runs. I

applied theoretical knowledge into practicalenvironment and applied my researchtechniques knowledge for analyzing datacollected for project work.In the field of marketing I went to various

schools at the time of CBSE board’s exams, which started on March 4 and went on toMarch 29; I covered almost each and everyschool of west Delhi. I went to these schoolsand counseled students who were there fortheir board exams along with their parents.I learned how to apply marketing skills

practically during my school activities. I alsodistributed various smart cards issued by ourcompany and collected data of those studentsand parents along with their names and phoneNo.s so that the company can use it for thepurpose of taking feedback from the students.I availed them with various discount offers;

various vouchers and I also understood theirmindset and guided them accordingly. When Iworked as a center manager I came acrossvarious problems which the students at mycenter were facing relating to the teachingmethod of the particular faculty, the batchtimings, the shifting of students into differentbatches etc.In short, I have inculcated leadership

qualities, learnt management skills, understood how a business entity works, enhanced my communication skills andlearned the applications of theoreticalknowledge.Priyanka RishiClass of 2011

The Singapore chapter ofthe IBS Alumni met atthe Raffles Hotel on the

evening of Saturday, July 24,2010. The evening started offrather slowly, with people gettingdelayed due to the trafficrestrictions on account of therehearsals for the national dayparade. But once the gathering wascomplete, the mood was one ofcamaraderie and pride. As the group introduced

themselves, it was heartening to seemembers from various batches andcampuses coming together, eager to

share their knowledge andexperiences. And what a wealth ofknowledge it was—with alumniranging from 1997 to 2009—it wastruly a coming together ofgenerations. The presence of Prof Y KBhushan, Senior Advisor andCampus Head IBS Mumbai added tothe richness of the gathering. Comingfrom different campuses of IBSAF, theprofessors gave an overview of thelatest developments, curriculum, placements, etc.Another striking fact that came

to light during the introductionswas the number of people who

found their life partners while atIBS!!! Now if these marriages areas successful as the professionallives of their students, this couldbecome a very marketable USP!!! Iguess this too would have to betime-tested.The formal introductions were

done, and it was time to have somefun. First up was the kid’s game—thewell-known lemon spoon race. Theparticipation was rather scarce asthere were only two kids present. Butthey were cheered on enthusiasticallyby everybody present, as both of themwere declared winners.

Next up, was a couple’s game. The object of the game was for thehusbands to stick as many strawsas they could in their wives lovelylocks in 30 seconds. The team thathad the most number of straws stillon the hair was the winner. After 3grueling rounds and what seemedlike an eternity of looking like foolsto the wives, the winning team wasdeclared. For the next game, the whole

group was divided into two teamsand made to stand in two parallellines. Every member of the teamwas given a straw. Each team had a

finite number of rubber bandsplaced at the front of its line.To win, they would have topick up as many of the rubberbands and pass them alongthe entire length of their lineand deposit them in an emptychair placed at the end. Thecatch—this would have to beaccomplished using the givenstraws which were to be heldin their mouths. It was avisual worthy of“ A m e r i c a ’ sF u n n i e s tVideos”. At

the end of the allotted time, theprofessors got down to countingthe bands, deposited by each team.Team A was declared the winner by2 bands. There were whispers thatthe two children had in fact helpedthe other team by unwittinglytaking the infamous rubber bandsfor their own games, but sincenothing could be proven beyond areasonable doubt, Team B had toabide by the judges’ decision.I guess no party is complete,

without a round of musical chairsfor the ladies. So keeping up withtradition, the fairer sex went around

The couples in the groupwere separated and each of themwas given a set of questions to fillout with responses to be filledout for both themselves and theirpartners. The couple with themaximum number of matchingresponses would win—The BestCouple Award. To add a little zingto this, the questionnaires werecorrected by the singles in the

Based on a guest lecture byMr. Hirdesh Singhal (IBS Ahmedabad, Classof 1997), Assistant Vice President, Mahindra Satyamdelivered at IBS, Hyderabad on 29th June, 2010

People are the Key to SuccessMr. Hirdesh Singhal started the lectureby telling us what we should do in orderto succeed. We should gain up-to-dateknowledge of the function we are going tojoin. We should also be aware of what ishappening in the industry andcommunication plays an important partin success. We should be a team playerand should develop people, capability. He told us that we should

conceptualize an initiative, giveconfidence to the management to lead itand showcase execution excellencecapabilities in an event or initiative. Theinitiative should add value to theorganization. We should have the abilityto lead people. Execute and achieveobjective by taking people along. Takingpeople along without authority is the keyto become a successful leader. In global organizations, we should be

able to work with people from diversebackgrounds. Diversity is important toorganizations. We should avoid groupsand should make effort to avoid speakingin vernacular because it hinderscommunication. In organizations, language and

business communication are veryimportant. Communication can make orbreak a person’s career. Communicationshould always be proactive. It becomesmore important when we foresee certainrisks in the work or in achieving projectobjectives. We should take calculatedrisks to achieve something better, higher.Articulation too is important. Intentionsshould be expressed correctly and clearly.Aparna KapseClass of 2012, IBS Hyderabad

August 14, 2010 dawned early for all members of Prakriti, our Environment Club. We left the campus at 4.45 AM, anhour at which we seldom get up otherwise! We reachedShamirpet lake which is around 70 km from our college by6:30 AM. It was a pleasant morning with cool breeze and anovercast sky.We were also joined at the lake by Prof Harsh Bhargava

who explained the damage that uncontrolled quarrying haddone to the lake. We saw huge tracts of land now devoid ofthe rocks and thus prone to mudslides. Rain water wouldnow wash away the sand and thus cause silting of the lakebesides higher losses due to seepage in the soil. This is whatwe the humans do to our precious environment! We started our trek with bird watching around the lake

and there were many birds across the lake, some flying inthe sky, some searching for food, and some taking rest aftertheir routine activity. It was a beautiful experience to spotthe birds and watch them through the binoculars becausewith binoculars we were able to see the real beauty of thesebirds with which they are gifted. To name a few birds whichwe spotted were: Cormorants (It has water proof wings),Grey Heron, Lesser Egret, Indian Shag, Shrike (it catchesthe food like lizard or insects and hangs them on thornybush and eats them after it gets dried), Lark, Bulbuls,Mynahs, Pond Heron, Ducks (swimming across the lake),Lapwing (which calls ‘did-you-do-it’ and makes its nest in

enjoying the beauty of the lake weproceeded to College of DefenceManagement, which is only one ofits kind in India. This college isbuilt on a rocky terrain which wasonce a barren patch as shown to usin dated pictures. The greeneryaround the college campus is verywell maintained and worth a visit. This college imparts managementeducation to defense personnelfrom India and friendly foreigncountries who come with 20 yearsor more of work experience. Wewere given a guided tour by ColJagdish Chaudhuri who showed ushigh-tech classrooms, seminar halland academic block. Some five odd suchsnakes were displayed to the audience.Amongst them were the Green Vine Snake(which merges with the trees and leaves),Common Sand Boa, the two-headed RedSand Boa, the Checkered Keelback and theRat snake. The non-venomous family ofsnakes survive on birds, rats and othersmaller animals. Rajkumar handled each of them andvividly talked about the body color, habitat, distinct marks and traits ofeach of them. He emphasized uponthe position and importance ofsnakes in our food chain. He verygraphically told us about hisvarious encounters with thesemystic creatures, his friends. As the session proceeded, the

audience was acquainted with thevenomous and more aggressivemembers of the same family. There areclose to some 53 species of venomoussnakes and some 20 odd speciesamongst them wander on land. Therest take sea as a natural habitat.

The four most venomous anddangerous prodigies of the family wereintroduced during the show. Not onlyaggressive and dangerous, they werealso majestically beautiful. The firstwas the Common Krait followed by theRussell Viper and the Common Cobra. These non-gregarious creatures wereamongst the few found in India. The show was an eye-opener for

L iberation moves between the pastand present in Adriana Rundel’s life.On the day after her 70th birthday

party, Adriana was travelling in a commutertrain and thinking about her childhood onItaly’s isle of Elba. She was ten during WorldWar II, and remembers hiding under thekitchen sink for fear of being found during theisland’s occupation.During some daytime restlessness, young

Adriana sneaks outside and discovers aninjured boy. Amdu Diop is a Senegalese 17-year-old AWOL soldier. Adriana helps Amdu, who takes refuge in the family home. The pairform a bond and the innocent beginnings offirst love. This war-time past is mixed with Adriana’s

current situation. She collapses in thecommuter train. She provides narration of thepresent events, observing the otherpassengers’ reactions outside her ownunconsciousness.Author Joanna Scott deftly combines the

two storylines. Adriana’s childhood is the mostinteresting portion of the book, but hercurrent health status commands readers’attention toward events of the present day.Vivid setting descriptions are evident in the

book. Images of Elba, presented throughAdriana’s young eyes are bright despite thedarkness of war-time occupation. Interestingcharacters and events make this novel a goodchoice for those who like a deeper, morethought-provoking level of fiction. Liberationis a literary trip to another time and place.
