Many buildings in Nigeria today were constructed during the colonial era that started in the late 1800s till Independence in 1960. These buildings

have remained and become fundamental parts of our culture, heritage and lifestyle.

The early 1900s and the Start of a MovementThe beginning of the 1900s was the era of change for most Nigerians. It was a time when the British were just settling into their new roles as administrators that meant that several structures were being commissioned all around the region. Ibadan has two prominent colonial structures, Mapo Hall, and the Bower’s Tower, which were designed by the same person.

Mapo HallThe Mapo Hall was designed by the Municipal Engineer assigned to the region, Robert Taffy Jones in 1925 and commissioned on October 5, 1929, by Sir Creame Thompson, the British Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria at the time.The hall was built during the reign of Baale Oyewole as a venue for administrative meetings, and ceremonial functions. The total cost of the building was £24,000, and that was a fortune back then.

The entire floors of Mapo Hall are covered with polished fieldstones, and the whole interior is done to intricate details. The hall measures 48.9m in length, 44m in width wide and is 11.5m high. It can accommodate up to 700 people at a time.Mapo Hall remains arguably the crown jewel of colonial architecture in Western Nigerian. Currently, the Hall serves as an event and civic center where important functions and occasions in the city are held.

Bower’s TowerOn top of Oke Aare is Bower’s Tower, a memorial that was erected in honor of Captain Ross Lister Bower, the first British resident and Travelling Commissioner that was in charge between 1893 and 1897.Taffy Jones, who was also responsible for building Mapo Hall just a few years earlier, designed the tower in the early 30’s. The structure is 60 feet tall and 11 square feet wide with two entrances. Residents nicknamed it after its 49-step spiral stairway that twists concentrically within the belly of the building and opens up at the top popularly call it Layipo.From the top of the tower (275m above sea level), one has a breath-taking panoramic view of Ibadan, and that makes Bower’s Tower one of the famous tourists attraction in Ibadan.

Mid 90s, Fry and Drew, and the Modernist MovementMax Fry and Jane Drew who were both renowned architects were put in charge of designing the school complex for the University of Ibadan from 1953 to 1959. The concrete domes of the mosque is an example of striking pieces of engineering that introduced “curves” onto the campus. The Kenneth Dike Library buildings with its vast bulk enclosed molded concrete screens was built to refresh students with a soothing cross-breeze. Some of the other buildings influenced by modernism include the Ivory Tower, the school chapel, Trenchard Hall and the Alexander Brown Hall in the University College Hospital.

The Brutality of the Mid 90s Brutalism is a variant of the modernist and is essentially a style based on the shaped and molded forms of concrete. It is commonly used for massive buildings, the result of which

The late 90s and the PostmodernismPostmodernism (also called International style architecture)

started around the mid-50s but did not gain momentum until the end of the 1970s and has since continued to

influence the way buildings are designed and built today. Years after gaining independence, many Nigerian architects and engineers returned home with knowledge e about the International style of design which led to a switch of buildings from the brutalist to a more innovative and conventional style of architecture. It was during this time that the famous Femi Johnson Broking House was built.

Broking HouseThe Femi Johnson Broking House is the first steel glass framed building in Nigeria. The 12-floor high-rise building was constructed in 1985 by contractors Cappa and D’Angelo using High Trop, a post-modernism movement described as architecture of glass boxes. High Trop buildings are usually modern with a central air conditioning system. The Broking House today houses many of the city’s top firms in the city and is still considered in Nigeria as one of the architectural marvels of the 20th century.

Other buildings that made use of the Brutalist style is the Agbowo Shopping Complex Tower and the former Cooperative western bank of Nigeria which was built together with the Obisesan Hall, the city’s first event center.

The Cocoa House Established in 1965, the Cocoa House at the time represented a breakthrough of colossal proportions for architecture in the region. The high-rise building has 25 floors and at a height of 105m, it towers above every other building in the in the city even till date. The total cost of the building then was in the tune of £900,000 most of which came from the proceeds made from the Cocoa business of the defunct Western Region of Nigeria. It recently had its 50 years anniversary and is undergoing a facelift.

“Nigeria’s Mathematical Forward,” Patrick Olusegun Odegbami is a legend deserving of a statue erected in his honor at the Liberty Stadium. Born in 1952, the speedy footballer played for beloved Shooting Stars (formerly IICC) during his entire footballing career. A graduate of the Polytechnic Ibadan, Odegbami was part of the Shooting Stars team that won the Cup Winners Cup in 1976, the first continental title to be won by any Nigerian club side. He also led Nigeria to its first African Nations Cup title in 1980.

Globally, sculptures and statues are considered as symbolic art forms that depict many important facets of history, culture and tradition. They take many shapes and offer a tremendous insight into the practices, lifestyle and people who they were created to represent.Ibadan is blessed with an abundance beautiful cultural art. Many of these are located around the city, even at roundabouts. The statutes are all different yet each tells a tale of the Yoruba people and their culture.

Gudugudu drums are percussionist instrument with origins in Yoruba land. The drum is shaped like a bowl with an animal skin pulled over it. This statue pays homage to the musical instrument, which is thought by many experts to be the oldest of Yoruba drums. Even though the Gudugudu plays as an accompaniment to the extended dundun family of Yoruba talking drums, it is often said that the rhythm of the gudugudu is so rich and vibrant that it could cater for an entire party on its own.

The Shekere is a musical instrument, which originated in West Africa. It is made from dried gourd with beads woven into a net covering the gourd. The instrument is quite popular and is deemed an extremely personal item in Yoruba folklore, however, a son is allowed to inherit his father’s in the event of the father’s demise. Among the Yoruba, the Shekere holds religious and historical significance. Due to the legacy of slavery, the instrument began to take roots in other cultures spanning from the Americas to the Caribbean.

HID Awolowo was many things to many people. A wife to her late husband. A mother to her children (both biological and adopted). A businesswoman. An entrepreneur. An astute politician. An avid reader, even till her great end, she kept abreast of everything happening in the country and the world.Her famous nickname, “Jewel of Inestimable value”, given to her by her husband is a testament of the immense contribution she made to her husband’s political career and achievements and the growth, expansion and success of the Awolowo dynasty.However, she is not just a matriarch of the Awolowo line; she is the First Lady of the Western Region of Nigeria, the Yeye Oba of the Yoruba’s, an icon of the nation and an example of how we all want to live and die.

Nigerians have a rich heritage of being talented at creating and crafting timeless pieces of art; one of which is ‘cane weaving’.

The word ‘’cane’’ may evoke different meanings to different people; individuals with an African upbringing may think of it as an instrument of discipline while some may quickly think of sweet sugar cane. However, the ‘cane’ being referred to is the material derived from the peeled bark or skin of the rattan vine, material that is responsible for one of the oldest art forms of the Yoruba people.

For generations, man has recognized the beauty of art created with the cane. Cane weaving is dated back to pre-colonial times when the majority of goods made were baskets, mats and other simple household items.

In current times, cane weaving has undergone a massive evolution from being just a simple craft to one that produces intricate and fascinating art forms including furniture and upholstery

works. Some weavers even create dramatic art forms that fit well into this new era of technology and innovation.

Ojo Obaniyi, an artisan and Ibadan resident, made history by creating the first cane woven car in the world. He covered the interior and exterior of his Volkswagen pickup beautifully with raffia palm cane, including the entire body of the car, the wheel caps, chairs, steering wheel and dashboard. When asked how he managed to come up with such an innovative idea he said,

‘’...I merely applied the skills I have to what is going on around me. I was brought up in the Yoruba weaving culture, and I just wanted to make something that most people in this generation can relate to’’

Many attribute the gradual decline of tradition, culture and heritage among the newer generation to technology and modernization but the words as spoken by Obaniyi foster hope that our culture can coexist with the emergence of modern society.

promptly. The ambiance is classy with jazz music, rhythm, and blues or old school hits playing in the background. The place is tastily furnished with bronze interior décor and beautiful furniture. Their menu will have you salivating. They offer dishes such as beef and broccoli, Kung Pao chicken, braised fish in soy sauce. Dishes are served with fried rice or steamed rice and come in medium or large portions; or many other side dish options. They also serve soups like chicken sweetcorn soup and Peking soup. There is a special Kiddies Menu with dishes such as popcorn chicken and fish and chips.For Kabachi restaurant, their greatest pride is the Teppanyaki, which is the hibachi grill in the middle of the restaurant where customers can see their meals being cooked by a skilled chef. Shopping in the city has been evolving at an impressive rate in recent time, and this transformation is largely thanks to a burgeoning community of malls and street shops.

Jingle Bags, Jingle BagsWherever a settlement exists, a market is bound to spring up as well. In most regions of Nigeria, there is a market in almost every major residential area, and Ibadan is no different. Nearly every market in the city runs true to the saying, “Jack of all trades”, with a slight twist at the end because they are definitely masters of all rather than none. You can find food produce, household items, abattoirs, fruits and even car parts in most of the major indigenous markets here in the city.

These markets are like open-air departmental stores that sell any and every kind of consumable items. The Dugbe Market got its name from the city’s center of commercial activites. The popular Bank Road runs parallel to the market, the old railway station is based here as is a police station and somewhere not too far off are

the adjoining Cocoa and Heritage Malls; the first two shopping malls to be built in the city. If you plan on visiting any of these markets, make sure you bring a full purse because there are so many things to see you’ll probably want to buy the whole market, and who knows? Maybe you might, given how affordable things are here.

From Bodija market, down to Ojoo or Beere market on the other side, one can find a variety of food produce, food ingredients, fruits, as well as other non-consumable household goods and services. For those who don’t like the hassle of large markets, there are smaller options like Gate, Sango or Yemetu Markets although things the cost of items here may be a bit steeper.

The modern shopping scene in Ibadan is a different experience. The city has become a thriving ground for real estate business especially Malls. In the space of 2 years, 4 shopping malls have been built with the Jericho mall undergoing construction. The malls are a good destination for those who prefer not to haggle over food prices or get pulled at from every side by those indignant indigenous market sellers looking to attract buyers to their wares. Shoprite Group of Companies, Africa’s largest food retailer, operates in two of the city’s malls; Heritage Mall and the Palms Shopping Mall at Ring-Road, the latter being the largest supermarket in Sub-sahara Africa. They sell a wide selection of goods from locally produced ones

to those imported from other countries. There’s also a deli counter and several aisles that hold large selections of gift items, household goods, and frozen food section. All around the city there are other well maintained and high-end supermarkets that carry affordable goods in accommodating surroundings.

If you ever do decide to shop in Ibadan, you will be spoilt for choice in deciding which market to shop. There is always something extra you’d like. The question will no longer be, “which one is cheaper or affordable”, it’ll be more of “which one am I in the mood to shop in today?”

I always regarded Christmas as my favourite holiday and I would eagerly wait for December throughout the rest of the year. My family always considered the Christmas season to be the most exciting and fun-filled time of year.

Growing up in Ibadan, there were so many things to look forward to at Christmas. There were numerous fun places to explore in the city, toys and gifts from loved ones and even Santa Claus and his big red bag of goodies. Decades later, I still consider Ibadan to be exciting and vibrant and by far my favourite place to spend the holidays. The city is buzzing with excitement and the Christmas lights and decorations scattered around everywhere add to the festive mood.

Food indulgence is a must during the holiday season and there are delicious bites to eat everywhere. Exquisito makes the best mouth-watering sugary mounds of goodness sure to give kids a sugar-high for months to come. The city is laden with ice cream lounges like Frostyz, Cold Stone Creamery and the new frozen yoghurt joint, Tutti Frutti where both kids and adults are spoilt for choice on where to go to enjoy a little treat.

When I was younger, visiting the Zoological Gardens and the now defunct Trans Amusement Park were the highlights of the year. Nowadays, the city’s attractions seem to have doubled since I was a child. There are game arcades where kids can play inside and other venues that promote outdoor fun like the Fun Factory at Bodija, which has several swings and toys. The Agodi Gardens has a dedicated playground section just for kids, and its swimming hole has several exciting slides where children always enjoy themselves. There is endless fun everywhere you turn in Ibadan; especially around this season, as there are many more Christmas fun events.

My childhood in Ibadan was very enjoyable, but the city has thrived and there are even more places to enjoy now that I am an adult. I find myself reminiscing and wishing to be a kid again so that I could experience all the new fun filled things around the city during this beautiful holiday season.

STAR TREKThe lager beer nationwide annual music tour, Star Trek, came to town on the 22nd of August at the Trans Amusement Park, Samonda in Ibadan. Every year, the Trek brings with it the most talented stars in the music industry and this year, Ibadan got to host to a star-studded list that includes Wizkid, Chidinma, Wande Coal, Sound Sultan, May D, DJ Exclusive, Ibadan-born Fuji maestro Pasuma, and host, Gbenga Adeyinka. The event was preceded by a beer carnival, where many Star larger loyal customers got the chance to win numerous fantastic prizes.

GLO LAFFTA FESTThe annual Globacom night of comedy, music and drama, Glo Laffta Fest hit Ibadan on the 11th of October. This year’s edition was tagged “Masters Of Comedy” which seems appropriate given the calibre of comedians who took to the stage. There were several performing acts at the event such as Julius Agwu, Seyi Law, AY, Basketmouth, Bovi, Okey Bakassi, I Go Die, Gordons, Omobaba, Bash, Salvador (Uganda), Helen Paul, to name a few. TRACE MOVIE TAKEOVERPopular music TV channel TRACE together with the Film House Cinema took Ibadan by storm on the Saturday, 15th of August 2015 as the Trace Movie Takeover made a pit stop at the Ventura Mall. The Takeover, which began in Lagos afforded winners, the chance of seeing an exclusive movie premiere with an A-List celebrity. 48 people were treated to a private viewing of the new Fantastic Four movie, and they also got to connect and hang out with popular rap artist Vector Tha Viper. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEEWake up and smell the coffee is an annual program organized to educate undergraduate students on Entrepreneurship, Enterprise, and Networking. The 2015 edition took place at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan. Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa (MILEAD) is an initiative that is targeted at educating and modelling young women in Africa into future leaders. Every year, the Fellowship identifies 25 of Africa’s most outstanding and emerging women leaders and offers them a three-week training course designed to create them into world leaders in their community. Beating over three thousand applications across Africa, and five finalists from Nigeria, Mary Ajayi an Ibadan local was selected to represent Nigeria at this year’s MILEAD Summer Institute, which was held in Ghana. Mary is the co-founder of Write Paragraphs, a United Nations volunteer observance community that leverages on the Internet and social media to help connect writers to advocacy projects and also expose them to educational materials designed to improve their writing. She is very passionate about what she does and fully intends to improve her the city through the skills she developed.

Can we meet you?My name is Owomoyela Lawrence Ayodele Oluwatobi Nifemi. I am an Ibadan-based comedian. I was born and bred in here in the city. I am the last child and only son of my parents. I schooled at Airforce International School, Alakia then later changed to St. Paul’s before moving on to the Government College Ibadan, Apata for my secondary school education. I attended the Polytechnic Ibadan for my Ordinary and Higher National Diplomas but I have it in mind that I owe my parents a BSc, so I am working on getting admitted into the University of Ibadan. are you saying the Bsc is to please your parents?Right now, with the pace at which I am going, I do not think I need a BSc but with the market I am going into, there is much more space for educated people. You cannot just come into the entertainment industry these days and say you want to be a comedian. Education has somewhat set the standard and hence has become vital.are you single?(Laughs)I am happily married to my best friend. She saw Peteru even before people started seeing me. She taught me how to dress, how to combine clothes and colours, whom to greet, who not to welcome. We dated for four years and got married in the fifth. We live in Oluyole together and are happy.How did you get into comedy?I can say I have been a comedian for a long time. When things were not good at home, and everybody was always down, I tried to bring out the humour in everything. I joined a dance group when I was younger, and I was usually the funny guy in the group. During one event we went for at the University of Ilorin, the MC came late and I got coerced into handling the show. Firstborn,

the comedian, saw and liked it so he told me to come to Lagos. For three months he showed me the ropes of the business; how to dress, talk, work, and that was how it began.so you are saying comedy is not all about just being funny?Comedy goes way beyond making people laugh. Those days of Baba Sala when you had to dress and look funny is gone. Now the humour is in your head and mind, not in your body. How did the name Peteru come about?When I was in Lagos, Firstborn made me his opening act. I had a Peteru joke I told many times then, and it was hilarious and before I knew it, the name just sort of stuck.Have you ever wanted to quit comedy?I have had many moments like that. There was a time when I tried gathering to travel out of the country because I know how to play football. I was frustrated because no money was coming in at that point, but then I sat down and tried to figure what I was not doing right. Right after I took part in an Amstel Malta competition and came out as the best comedian in the South-West of Nigeria. The

Grand prize was N500,000 cash prize, and, N100,000 giveaway shopping voucher, a weekend for two at Four Points by Sheraton and a trip to Ghana. It gave me the assurance that I could still do it. At this stage, though, I cannot quit. Comedy for me is life, and it is all I want to do.any major setbacks?Yeah, mostly financial difficulties. I might have been born with a silver spoon, but it later changed to plastic spoon (laughs). When I ran to Lagos, but couldn’t cope anymore, Firstborn told me to go back and face my city. Ibadan is crazy, people will call you for a wedding, pay for expensive halls and caterers, but then the MC will be offered peanuts. Some might not even pay you entirely. It was tough.How will you rate yourself regarding popularity?Within Ibadan, I can say my brand has covered 80% of places. We are working on gaining recognition outside of Ibadan. Each state has its home based comedians, and I am favoured to be one of the prominent ones here at home.Your primary influences in the industry both locally and internationally?In Nigeria, I enjoy Laff-Up and Basketmouth while, outside Nigeria, Kevin Hart and Aries Spears are my favourites. I learn from everybody to be honest even OAPs and DJsWhat’s your relationship with Alibaba?It is a father to son relationship. I met him when he came for the annual laffmatazz in Ibadan. After the show, he asked me to come to Lagos, which I did. When I got to his house, he gave me a full tour and even got to see his room something only Basketmouth, Tee A, and Bovi have had the privilege of doing. We talked a lot, gave me books to read and told me I was different and that I should keep in touch. It was a humbling experience. He even gave me a substantial amount of money on my wedding day. He has been a rock for me.Who is your primary competitor in the industry; whom do you see as a threat?I see myself as my significant threat and my main competitor is myself.if not comedy, what?Football!!! Football!!!

Where do you see yourself, five years from now? I just want to be wherever God wants me to be. I always say, no past, no future, just now. It is my favourite quote. We keep talking about the future and don’t even know how it is like. I believe if we handle our present very well, the future will be okay.any projects you are currently working on?Presently, we are working on a tour around Universities in the South-Western region. It is called Comedy Hub; My Campus Experience. The first is at the University of Ibadan, and then Bowen, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Obafemi Awolowo University, then over to the University of Ilorin.What are your aspirations?I want to be a brand, a role model. I am hopeful for many things. Some people still don’t know me, so I have to work to get my name out there. I am not the best yet, so I don’t let whatever little fame I have right now get into my head. you work as an OaP at naija FM, how did that come about?I’ve always wanted to be an OAP, in fact, I have been dropping materials for Splash FM for over three years. I, however, had an opportunity to work at Naija FM which is a sister station to Beat FM so I “ported”. Gra-Gra express is my show. It is from 4pm-9pm. We talk about anything and everything.I wanted to ask if comedy is fulfilling as a career, but with the way you’ve been talking, it is obvious that… (cuts in)I told my dad that I said I would have been useless in computer science. I was not as brilliant as they thought I was. I am proud of what I have done for myself.Any unforgettable moment?I have many. The Ibadan artiste popularly known as Phizzle but whose real name is Fela yomi-Layinka is many things rolled into one. Born and bred in the city of Ibadan, the artist who cites his early influences into music as Trybesmen and Eedris Abdulkareem said his love for music was birthed when he realised that rap was something that he could do.

Even though he has a first degree and graduate degree in Information Science Management from Brunel University in the United Kingdom, Phizzle still holds fast to his artistic and creative calling. When he is not belching out tunes like his newest single, “Rashidi Yekini”, the Bodija International College alumni is working on his brand development and design company, “EyeCandy Media”, which boasts of the logo and complete branding work of Ibadan’s Ventura Mall as one of its many achievements.

The future holds a lot for Phizzle who has plans to release the remaining three tracks from his EP album titled, Egypt, over the next three weeks. It is originally a five-track album of which he released the first track, Rashidi Yekini, and recently dropped the video of the second titled, ‘Biggest’.

He describes the remaining three tracks as Afrobeat Highlife, a different genre from his earlier released Rashidi Yekini track that he calls Trap Music, something he describes as raw and energetic. His soon-to-be-released tracks promise to be even more captivating than the last and given the creativity, dedication and commitment we have seen in his previous projects and achievements in the past, we do not expect anything less.

about four years ago when he won a Globacom sponsored music contest and emerged as the best rapper in the city. He has since signed to Cockie Entertainment and released hit songs like ‘’Season Film’’, ‘’Aramanda’’, ‘’Your Love’’ and ‘’Ijo Bata’’, all which enjoyed massive radio airplay. His versatility also means he has collaborated with quite a number of artists including Patoranking, Lace, Sean Tizzle, Lil’ Kesh, Fabulous Pizzy and others.

Keanzo had incredible 2015 which he capped off by winning the artist of year Award at the recently held Scream’s Award, but his biggest aspiration remains winning the prestigious Next Rated Awards at the Headies and at this rate you get the feeling that might soon become a reality.

He is currently shooting videos for his songs; Aramada and Ijo Bata.

One of such talents is Kingsley Adeyemi Olakunle, aka Keanzo, but you, however, get the feeling he will not be having any of such problems.

Keanzo is one of Ibadan’s fast rising musical talents whose Afrocentric brand of music combined with his fascinating sense of fashion has set him aside from the pack. The fact that he is also a self-taught prodigy who can play virtually any instrument does not hurt either.

ibadan’s real estate in Perspective: Samonda Aerodrome

Ibadan, arguably the largest city in West Africa, is home to some of the most contemporary and architecturally pleasing neighbourhoods in the country, a far cry from the picture of a sea of rusty roofs often published to give it the feel of an ancient city. In reality, Ibadan city has some of the best idyllic residential estates and Government Reservation Areas (G.R.As) in Nigeria. The real estate market in the city is not only vibrant, but it commands good value as well. Take the Samonda Aerodrome G.R.A as a case study…

Samonda Estate and G.R.A. is a vast development of perhaps the best aggregation of the loveliest new houses you will find in the city. It has a feel of Lekki Phase One in the Lagos Island or the Maitama Extension in Abuja municipality. Sitting on several hectares of land that used to be the old Ibadan Aerodrome (very

actively used in the 60s and 70s when Ibadan was the center of the Western Region of Nigeria). This G.R.A. is located right in the middle of the town along Oyo Road, next to the Amusement Park site and close to the University of Ibadan. After the aerodrome had been acquired from the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (F.A.A.N) by the government in office, it was promptly subdivided into plots and allocated to deserving citizens who applied.

Today, the Estate is a fully developed residential area that rivals even the very best in the country. If in need of some inspiration for the architecture for your dream home, the Samonda G.R.A is perhaps the place to visit. A change of management combined with recent results and a strong 9th place finish last season has lifted morale around the city and left even the most pessimistic of fans excited at the prospect of what’s to come in the coming season.

The Shooting Stars of Ibadan was formed in 1960 and were one of the core founders of the Nigerian Premier

League in 1972, back when they were called WN DC Ibadan (Western Nigeria Development Company), and were later, IICC (Industrial Investment and Credit Corporation) Shooting Stars of Ibadan. The 70s and early 80s represented an era of great success for both club and her fans. Between 1971 and 1983, the club won 3 domestic league titles (1976, 1980, 1983) and 3 FA cups (1971,1977, 1979). In 1976, they became the first Nigerian side to win the highly coveted African Cup Winners Cup, when they beat Tonnerre of Cameroon in a heavily contested and fiery final. Those were indeed happier times that saw the emergence of names like Rashidi Yekini, Segun Odegbami, Ike Shorounmu and Mutiu Adepoju. These would also go on to represent the National team at major tournaments for many years.

After a quiet decade that was marred by internal politics and management issues, the 3SC went through a mini-resurgence in the 90s; a Felix Owolabi inspired CAF Cup win in 1992, the FA Cup and Domestic League double in 1995 reminded the nation what the Shooting Stars can do. The team will then win the League title again in 1998, their last major honor till date.

Since the turn of the millennium, the club has found itself in a fix that is ironic given that they have been shuttling

between the Premier League and the lower division, much to the anguish of the fans who cannot but contrast this dismal form to the glory days of old.Football to these fans is a culture and despite the tougher times, their support for the club has remained unwavering. The shooting stars of Ibadan have the highest number supporters in the country till date. A visit to the Lekan Salami Stadium at Adamasingba on any given matchday can be a colorful and intimidating affair depending on whom you came to support. The stadium is always over pouring with locals whose cries and yells are infused with passion urging the players on and creating a supercharged and electrified atmosphere that is bound to strike fear into the heart of oppositions. This support combined with the sharp change in management is why the club defied the prediction of most pundits and finished the season strongly, just 10 points below a continental place.

The team is expected to keep building on its recent success, and a charge for a continental spot is expected in coming seasons. Management is stable, the team is playing a better brand of football, the Academy has a couple of exciting talents coming through, and you get the feeling that with a couple quality addition, the blue and whites of the Oluyole Warriors might yet again fly over Africa.

There are peculiar geographical and socio-economic dynamics that make up every city and Ibadan

is no different in that regard. It has to be said that for an emerging city center, Ibadan has little traffic or none of those endless bouts of traffic that often leave most Lagosians crazy. The city has three main modes of transportation; Land, Rail and Air.Moving around in Ibadan is convenient and affordable. This, of course, is as a result of the ease the public access the city’s infamous Micra cabs, city-wide public buses and the recent incorporation of the Ajumose, a rapid bus system, befitting of a modern commercial center.There is a slight reduction in comfort for Ibadan’s public buses, as they are small in size and you have to share with nine other people, but even this disadvantage is redeemable by how cheap fare is and how quickly it takes to reach desired destinations. In most cases, the charge depends on your destination but even the cost of transportation to the furthest parts of the city is twice as cheap as the

cabs in other thriving urban centers.Ibadan’s bus rapid transit aliased Ajumose is a 43-seater transportation system initiated in May 2013, which saw 100 buses distributed along the main cities in Oyo state. These buses run on different routes and are most commonly used by school students and public workers. To emphasize the affordability of these buses, they are free in the early hours of the morning and late in the evenings. While Ibadan awaits the initiation of her intercity metro rail service, the city is currently home to rail lines laid by the Nigerian Railway Corporation in 1900. Ibadan is a beneficiary of the dedication of Nigeria’s British colonial government to establish themselves in the newly acquired sub-region with regards to administration and commerce. This is evident in the cross-city rail lines that run from Odo-Ona through Obafemi Awolowo Road, Dugbe to Sango, Ojoo towards Ojurin, Bodija, up to Iwo Road eventually leading out of Ibadan towards Ogun state on one end and Kwara state on the other end. The introduction of the

rail system in Nigeria was a milestone in the country’s history. Their proliferation was so extensive that by the 1940s, two decades before Nigeria’s independence there were over 5200miles active of railway lines laid across the country. Ibadan’s local airport situated at Old Ife Road successfully completes the list of notable mentions when it comes to transportation in the city. Moved from Samonda to a more permanent site at Alakia during the 90s, the airport serves local flights like Arik and Overland Airways, to Lagos and Abuja. Without a doubt, the ease of mobility around the metropolis of Ibadan is relatively more blissful than in many other emerging city centers, but even this advantage is not the biggest spotlight when discussing transportation in Ibadan. In recent times, the city’s administration has improved infrastructures to serve better its people, from smoother roads to overhead bridges to decongest certain areas with regular traffic.
