I pulled my fiery red hair back into a loose bun before Iquickly grabbed my brand new Paramore bag from my

chair and walked hurriedly out of the old fashioned woodendoor, passing the three guards that stood outside my roomday and night.

‘Where are you going Blaise?’ asked one of the guardsnamed Shiro who had deep brown cat ears with a matchinglong tail who was nearly always followed around by hisyounger brother, Kuro, since their dad died. I didsometimes feel bad for them, but since Callum becameking and appointed Shiro to be my body guard . I now

officially hated him.‘To the Upworld,’ I shrugged my shoulders, not

wanted to get into specifics because then he might end uptagging along too. Not good for my image.

‘Where?’ Kuro piped up and I was very nearly temptedto let Kuro come with me. He had cat ears and tail just likehis brother, but he was only about nine and ever so sweet.And wasn’t nearly as annoying as Shiro.

‘King Callum wants to talk to you B,’ Orthello smiledlazily, appearing out of thin air. I would have to ask himlater if he would teach me how to do that before I left forHellwise.

‘Why do you call him King ‘O‘.’ I smiled back, stickingmy tongue out at him. ‘You’ve known him longer thananyone.’

‘Ah but I am a general now.’ Orthello smiled again,standing up looking a bit smug of himself, he walked over

behind me and slung his arms over my shoulders. ‘Sowhere did you get in my babes?’

‘Hellwise.’ Now it was my time to look smug withmyself, Hellwise was where the best of the best went. Andmost of all it was mixed. Boys and girls. And admittedly itwas where Daemons, Faeries, Vampyers and everyone elsewent, so Cal probably wouldn’t be happy. But hell. Was hegoing to school - did he have to abide the smell?

‘Well done,’ Kuro smiled cutely, obviously not knowingwhat Hellwise was.



I smiled back at Kuro while Orthello just stood thereand scowled openly at me talking to them. As much as Ilove Orthello, he was mightily up himself.

‘Kuro where is Hellwise?’ I asked him grinning.

He made a face, then suddenly burst into tears, whichsurprised both me and Shiro and we dropped on our kneesat the same time. While Orthello didn’t act at all. He justlook there looking unimpressed and tapping his feetimpatiently on the stone floor.

‘Kuro what’s the matter?’ I asked him, softly strokinghis face, brushing away his ruby red tears.

‘Are you…you…you leaving…’ he asked stuttering

because he was crying so hard.‘Only for a little bit Kuro,’ I said softly, shootingdaggers at Orthello because I could hear him sigh fromwhere I was sitting, it also looked like Shiro had noticed aswell and was also trying his hardest not to scowl at Orthellobecause that would result in one hell of a beating fordisrespecting someone in higher ranks than yourself.

‘But we can visit you, can’t we Blaise,’ garbled Shirofor once looking at me without hatred in his eyes.

‘Or course you guys can visit me. Promise,’ I smiled,and meaning it. I would miss them when I left - well Kuro atleast and I would love it if they would visit me.

This seemed to calm Kuro down and push Orthelloover the edge as he walked over to me and grabbed myarm tightly and dragged me to my feet.

I tried pushing him away, but I am a pitifully weakperson and it made no difference. ‘Ow! Orthello get the hell

off me.’ I ordered. Nope that didn’t work either.‘Dude she can walk on her own,’ Shiro saidchivalrously, standing up.

With Orthello’s free hand he lashed out and hit Shiroaround the face, nearly knocking him off his feet.

‘Orthello!’ I gasped before he dragged me into mybrothers chamber.

Orthello hesitated at the door, looked at me andobviously wondering if I would grass him up about hurting

me to Cal. I mean it doesn’t matter that he hurt Shiro even



though Shiro was the one guy being decent. HoweverOrthello obviously thought that I wouldn’t grass him up andafter assessing that I had no red marks from where he haddragged me there standing out on my pale white skin, he

opened the door grandly.‘Sire, Blaise is here to see you.’My brother smiled, not his usual impish smile which I

had inherited, but a grand fake smile. ‘Blaise it’s good tosee you. You. Leave.’ he gestured to Orthello and after hegave a slight nod to me, he disappeared leaving me andCallum alone.

‘So,’ I said, as I strolled around looking at all the new

things he had acquired since last month when he becamethe ruler of the underworld, ‘how’s being king, sire?’‘What now B?’ he asked in his usual voice.I smiled fleetingly at him, I was glad to see that he

could still tell when I was pissed off. ‘I got my acceptanceletter today.’

‘Where did you get?’ he pressed me curiously. ‘Wait letme guess….Hmm, the werewolf school,’ he teased,laughing at me.

I laughed with him, it was nice seeing him laugh,normally he just scowled at he when I tried to talk to himnowadays.

‘Nope. I got into Hellwise.’‘Seriously?’‘Yeah I know,’ I smiled smugly, feeling rather proud of

myself, but Callum being a dick totally popped that bubble.‘But that’s a mixed school,’ he cried in despair, at first

I thought he was worried about me mixing with boys, Imean its not like I am frigid but he didn’t know that, butthen he carried on. ‘All sorts go there. Faeries, Vampyers,Wraths, Ghosts, Furies even a few Werewolves get in. Whatwill people think?’ he asked himself, beginning to pace theroom.

I stared at him in shock for a few moments before Isighed angrily and picked my bag back up, ’You know whatKingling. I almost forgot about how much of a dick you

were.’ before stalking out of the room, with my head held



high, ignoring Orthello as he attempted feebly to stop megoing into the Upside (mortal) world.

*‘Jeeze Callum is so tetchy since he became king -

seriously. Like yesterday he totally blanked me at dinner hewas to busy to even bother to notice that Drew has fuckedoff with what’s-her-face?’ I moaned to my best mate forabout nine years - Belle.

‘Claudia?’‘No. The other one.’ I thought, absent mindly fiddling

with my flame red hair.‘Mitsume?’ Belle asked, ‘or Jayni? Dayz he has so

many I cant remember them all.’‘I think it was Mitsume - but anyway Drew has gonewith her without even saying goodbye,’ I shook my headslightly, closing my eyes, ‘how messed is my family now? Imean before Cal was king, we was a bit naff, but now…’ Itailed off, opening my eyes, leaning back onto the skateramp, trying to warm myself up.

‘Think about it this way B, we get our letters todayright? Well you already got yours but we cant all be

princesses. So that means four and a half days until weescape.’ Belle smiled, sitting next to me, pulling a bar of chocolate out of thin air and handing me a minisculesquare.

‘Hellwise?’ she asked me, as I yanked the entirechocolate bag from her lap and dropping the single squarein her lap. When I nodded she carried on fretting. ‘Yeahwell, Hellwise. I just hope they think I am powerful enough.

Or if I passed. Or if I-’‘You’ll get in. I mean you’re smarter than me by far soif I did you will.’

Belle smiled easily, thrumming her fingers in a strangerhythm on the tiles of the old fashioned, graffitied skateramp. Waving her hand in a confusing pattern, making twosmall glass of WKD appear.

‘Here’s to new beginnings, and everything else in-between,’ she smiled, raising her glass.

‘Yep. And here is to starting Hellwise on a clean slate.’



I smiled, clinking our glasses together, making a few of theold people who had been openly staring at us from acrossthe road, gasped in displeasure.

‘Do you think that they saw anything?’ Belle asked me

under her breath. I giggled and shrugged my shoulders,holding out the palm of my hand and making a spurt of pure black fire appear and sit contently in the centre,before clenching my hand into a fist, making the flamesdisappear then smiling threateningly at the old ladies.

‘Wow,’ Belle laughed, ‘I never knew that old peoplecould move so fast.’

Instead of replying I sighed as I heard the most

annoying voice in the world come closer to where we weresitting.I meant to move away and although I saw that Belle

looked a bit more than a little bit confused - she followedme regardless.

‘What are you ignoring me now?’ he asked, making amove to wrap his arms around my waist, I sped up my walkso he couldn’t wrap his arms around.

‘B come on babes.’ he whined, having to jog to match

pace with us.‘Don’t call me B,’ I growled spinning around, nearly

smacking into Lucas, and at that point I very nearly forgotwhy I hated him so much. He had a lost look across hisface, which made him look surprisingly innocent for such acheating lying bastard which he is.

‘Babe…’ he began in a voice that he knew that Icouldn’t resist. I cut across him before he could make me

forget and win me over, like he had done so many timesbefore. But as Belle said, a new year meant newbeginnings. Cutting off all the loose ties, and Lucas was amajor loose tie.

‘Lucas no.’ I said firmly, even though with every word Ifelt my heart heaven inside my chest. ‘Look we aren’tworking out - just like I said last night.’

‘But babe I love you,’ he protested.‘Yeah, I loved you too. Loved Lucas, I spoke to you last

night remember, I cant keep going out with you, not after



last night.’‘Nothing happened last night babes. I only have eyes

for you.’‘Lucas I’m Blaise. Not the four other blond Waifs you

enchanted last night,’ I yelled, loosing all self control I mayhave gained over the last month of constant training.

‘But I have only ever had eyes for you angel.’ Hegrinned.

‘We are over Lucas. Over. Over. Over. Don’t ever comenear me again.’

‘You don’t mean that,’ he gasped looking so hurt that Ivery nearly reconsidered leaving him.

Nearly. Not quiet.‘Don’t I?’ He should know by now that I never likedbeing told what to do. ‘So you - Lucas - now know what Ido and that I don’t mean?’

‘You love me. It’s obvious.’ he leered as his armssnaked around mine, pinning them to the side.

‘Lucas let go now!’ I ordered, yet when he did nothingapart from smile even broader, I began to freak out, I couldhear Belle behind me panic, bless her she wasn’t the best

person to be with if something bad was happening. Lucaswas well known for being that slight bit reckless. Andsadistic. ‘Lucas get the hell off me right now!’

I don’t remember when Shiro appeared behind him,but at some point, Shiro must’ve heard me strugglingagainst Luke’s horrible cold hands, because he hadgrabbed Luke’s collar and thrown him backwards into themetal climbing frame.
