SETTING

Backdrop◦ The setting is a museum of antiques during the Nazi and Communist

regimes in East Berlin Believability

◦ It is set in a factual time and place as well as being based off a real person

Motive◦ It gives Charlotte, a transvestite, the desire to survive in this difficult era

Atmosphere◦ These tragic times set the scene for a life of troubles that Charlotte is

forced to endure Situation

◦ The fact that this gay man is forced to live in these eras creates conflicts and issues for Charlotte

Metaphor◦ The metaphor is that although these difficult times occurred the human

race still managed to endure just like her and the items made it through the tough times

Charlotte tells Doug, a playwright, the story of her life throughout the play and the characters come alive as she reminisces

The Communists and Nazis were very oppressive towards gays and transvestites

When the citizens found out that Charlotte had been forced to turn in other homosexuals to the Stasi, they wanted her honorary medal to be taken away
