Deed Enforcement Updates for Hunter’s Chase
With the advent of warmer weather quickly approaching, this means our yards will be greening up and starting to grow again. This will also mean stepped up enforcement of deed restrictions related to our yards!
Property owners and residents are required to keep yards mowed, driveways and sidewalks edged and free of weeds between cracks, and all hedges trimmed, especially in areas that could impact sightlines for cars pulling out of driveways and sidewalk visibility. Hedges next to houses should also be trimmed to avoid creating visual barriers which are attractive to burglars. All specific restrictions and obligations related to yard/premises maintenance are outlined in your Home Owners Deed Restrictions Manual, or you can call or email Carmen at Goodwin Management at 512-502-7503 or [email protected].
Our association and the City of Austin are also in the midst of enforcing removal of derelict basketball goals, or any goals that are in the city right of way or create any kind of visual deterrent to the right of way on the streets and sidewalks. Our deed code defines a goal as derelict if it is missing or has a deteriorated backboard and/or net, and a pole that is rusted or no longer upright/stable. Removal of these basketball goals is actually easier and much more affordable than you think! Our deed enforcement agent, Jim with Sage Management, can help you as he has already assisted numerous homeowners with securing the removal of old/unwanted basketball goals. If you have any questions, concerns or want to report/discuss any problems, please contact Jim at 512-576-2671 or [email protected].

How Much Damage Can Cold Weather Do to Landscape Plants?
www.gtlandscapes.comTo learn more, visit the GTL website at
Debbie Cole of Greater Texas Landscape (GTL) handles this timely question. She says the damage can be significant with freeze damage appearing for up to 9-12 months following the freeze and “vascular damage really shows up in the heat and stress of the summer.”
Cole’s recommendations are geared for commercial landscapers and HOAs, but others may benefit from them. She points out that the recent cold weather and ice caught a lot of people unaware and the “best action you can take is to have a PLAN! If you plan ahead, you will not have to worry about damage.”
As part of the plan, Cole recommends using freeze cloth for pots and small areas and having adequate quantities of a product called “Ice Melt” to help reduce ice buildup. She adds that heaters are sometimes utilized in courtyards and amenity areas for delicate materials, but they may not be practical.

CCI Greenheart NeedsVolunteers to Host Foreign Students
CCI Greenheart, an educational nonprofit, is reaching out to the community looking for volunteers! The organization is asking volunteers to host a foreign student arriving in late August 2014 and leaving in June 2015.
There are about 200 students waiting to find out where they will spend their year in America. The students are 15-18 from over 60 countries.
Your family can learn about a new culture and change a life. The students come with medical insurance, speak English and bring their own spending money for activities and personal items. They attend the local high school during the school year and ride the bus to and from school.
You are responsible for providing a bed and meals in your home. If you or someone you know would be interested in hosting the 2014-
2015 school year, contact:Mollie RenardetLocal Coordinator, CCI [email protected] Greenheart will give a $100 referral to those who refer a volunteer
family that will/does host a student! Again, contact Mollie for details.

Oak wilt, caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum, is the most destructive disease affecting live oaks and red oaks in Central Texas. Most of the tree mortality results from treeto-tree spread of the pathogen through interconnected or grafted root systems, once an oak wilt center becomes established. New infection centers begin when beetles carry oak wilt fungal spores from infected red oaks to fresh, open wounds on healthy oaks. Wounds include any damage caused by wind, hail, vehicles, construction, squirrels, birds or pruning. Research has shown that both oak wilt fungal mats on infected red oaks and insects that carry oak wilt spores are most prevalent in the spring. Below is a brief description of how you can reduce the risk of fungal spread when pruning. • Always paint fresh wounds on oaks, including pruning cuts
and stumps, with wound dressing or latex paint immediately after pruning or live tree removal at all times of the year.
• Clean all pruning tools with 10% bleach solution or Lysol™ between sites and/or trees.
• If possible avoid pruning or wounding of oaks during the spring (currently defined as February1 through June 30). Reasons to prune in the spring include:
• To accommodate public safety concerns such as hazardous limbs, traffic visibility or emergency utility line clearance.
• To repair damaged limbs (from storms or other anomalies) • To remove limbs rubbing on a building or rubbing on other
branches, and to raise low limbs over a street. • On sites where construction schedules take precedence,
pruning any live tissue should only be done to accommodate required clearance.
• Dead branch removal where live tissue is not exposed. Pruning for other reasons (general tree health, non-safety
related clearance or thinning, etc.) should be conducted before February 1 or after June 30. Debris from diseased red oaks should be immediately chipped, burned or buried. Regardless of the reasons or time of year, proper pruning techniques should be used. These techniques include making proper pruning cuts and avoiding injurious practices such as topping or excessive crown thinning. If you are uncertain about any of this information, you should consult with a Texas Oak Wilt Certified arborist, ISA Certified Arborist, or an oak wilt specialist from a city, county or state government agency such as the Texas Forest Service or Texas AgriLife Extension Service.
