(Continued on Page 3)

Lots of people begin the New Year making resolutions to improve their finances. Here are sound financial tips from the nonprofit National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) to help make financial resolutions a reality:

Do it now. Many will wait until they feel the time is right to begin new behaviors. If you wait until after the big party to start watching your diet, or until after that big purchase to start saving money, the ideal time will never present itself.

Write down your financial resolutions. Clearly articulate why you think your resolution is a good idea, steps you can take to reach your goal, and what you hope to gain. Post your list where you will see it each day.

Identify your money morals. Understanding your values and attitudes about money will bring clarity to the decision-making process. NEFE offers various online tools, such as the LifeValues Quiz, which will help you identify your values and make resolutions based on those values.

Recruit a "financial buddy." Share your resolutions with a trusted family member or friend who can provide support in helping you meet your financial goals. Find someone who will hold you accountable and will set a good example for you to follow.

Vary goal intensity. Give yourself a short-term objective such as paying more than the minimum on one credit card this month. A long-term goal could be setting up and adding to the emergency savings account.

Monitor your progress regularly. If you are trying to reduce debt, make sure you check your balances often. Set aside a couple of hours each week to address your finances. Over time this will become second nature and part of your normal routine.

Address conflict logically. If you find yourself breaking a financial goal by reverting to old spending habits, identify what might be causing you to stray and take the time to ask yourself if the decision is appropriate given your current financial situation.

PLAY IT SAFE IN THE NEW YEAR!Thieves are casing nice neighborhoods like Hunter's Chase, looking

for easy targets. In 2014 reports were made regarding car break-ins as well as a home entry through an unlocked garage door.

Lessen the opportunity for thieves in 2015 by always locking your car doors, even if parked in your own driveway. Also, keep garage doors down and locked, even if you are home.

Equally important, watch out for each other, and report suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Hunter's Chase has its share of talented people. One is singer-songwriter James Bryant, who has lived in the neighborhood since 1988.

James plays Classic and Contemporary American music, and he has been playing guitar and drums around Austin for many years. Recently, he opened for well known musician, and one of the big names from the Cosmic Cowboy music era, Michael Martin Murphey at One World Theater.

James writes and performs original material, and covers the likes of Crosby, Stills & Nash, James Taylor, Paul Simon, John Prine and Texas legends Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen and Lyle Lovett. You can catch him twice a week at Iron Cactus on Friday nights from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm and Sunday for brunch from 11:30 am-1:30 pm.

Get on his mailing list to find out about his upcoming performances. Reach him at [email protected]

January and February are notorious months when it comes to flu cases.

Older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. If you fit these categories -- and even if you don't -- getting a flu shot probably makes sense. The U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC), in fact, recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone six months of age and older as the "first and most important" step in protecting against this serious disease.

If you haven't, no worries. There are no reports of short supply and in our area, HEB and Walgreens offer flu shots. Keep in mind that both HEB and Walgreens' pharmacists are trained to provide immunization services, and the form-filling process is quick (HEB even allows you to download the consent form). Besides, HEB and Walgreens, Liberty Pharmacy in nearby Spicewood-183 shopping center offers flu shots.

FYI: Every year, 5% to 20% of the U.S. population gets the flu, and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications and about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes.

Have You Had a Flu Shot?
