Silver Medal for Erin

Hunter Sports High’s Erin Cleaver has continued her form from the Rio Paralympic Games by claiming a silver medal in her long jump event at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London last week with a leap of 4.61 metres.

This result was Erin’s best international result yet and her first major medal in the event. Erin had been in the gold medal position until her third jump and despite missing out on the gold to eventual winner Olivia Breen (4.81m) from Great Britain she was thrilled with her overall result. Erin also competed in the 100m event.

Australian Honours

Several Hunter Sports High students have been honoured

with Australian team selections in recent weeks.

Congratulations to Year 12 student Luke Huth (pictured above

right) who was selected in the Australian Schoolboys Rugby

League team. Former student Kyle Schneider (also pictured

above) was also selected in the team.

Congratulations also go to Hannah Bourke and Annalee

Grove who were selected in the Australian U20 Young

Matildas team during the school holidays. The girls took part

in their first international friendly tournament against Canada

and the USA at the Australian Institute of Sport.

TERM 3 – WEEK 2 – 2017

BALANCING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT

Camp and Crocs By Luke Dorman

I had the best time of my life at the Northern Territory. On the Saturday morning I woke up at 5am to get ready to go to Newcastle Airport. I arrived there at 5.30am. I waited for our group to come for half an hour. The group got there at 6am and we put our luggage on the plane. We took off and we had coffee and snacks on the plane. It took three hours to fly to Brisbane. We jumped out at Brisbane airport then had lunch. Half an hour later we were back on the plane to fly to Darwin.

When we got there it was so hot. The temperature was 33C. On the first day we didn’t do that much but met everybody that was up there. Every night we had to go to bed at 9pm and wake up at 6am for breakfast. I loved being able to go back as many times as we wanted for food at meal times.

On the second day at the camp we did abseiling and rock-climbing. There were 16 campers and lots of people to look after us. The third day we had a disco in the evening and went motorbike riding during the day.

The fourth day we went to Jumping Crocs and then Flip Out. Flip Out is awesome trampolining. I met a girl called Zoe who is from the Northern Territory. The next day we went to the Wave Pool in Darwin and then horse-riding in the afternoon. On the last night I was rewarded for my maturity and for helping others. The staff at camp said I would make a great carer at camp and they want me to do a course to become a camp assistant. That would be great if I could go to the camp and help run it.

The plane was fun because we had coffee and snacks. On the way home the plane was delayed for an hour and we had to wait in the plane before we took off. At night I saw a saltwater crocodile right next to my tent. The water was about 30 metres away and the crocodile went back into the water. It was about 4m long.

My trip to the Northern Territory By Sarah Morgan

I stayed at a wonderful place called Goanna Park which was

90km south of Darwin with 16 other campers, 11 senior carers

and 10 Junior Police Rangers (they were 12-14 year old kids).

Early Saturday morning was the day I had to leave for Darwin

and I got to Goanna Park around 2:30pm in the afternoon of

Saturday. When I got to the camp all the kids were chatting to

each other and I went in the main hall just to listen to ACDC on

my device then a boy named Rohan walked up to me and asked

if he could sit next to me so I nodded and then we became best

mates.

On the second day we had motorbike riding which was so much

fun, then we went swimming in Corroboree which was also fun.

We went back to camp had dinner, showers then bed at 9:00pm.

On the third day we did rock climbing, abseiling, flying fox and

more swimming. I am really scared of heights so I didn’t do those,

but I did go swimming. We went back to camp for dinner, showers

and bed.

On the fourth day we went horse riding and we went for a swim

at Palmerston pools. It was so much fun. We went back to camp

for dinner, showers, disco and bed at 9:30pm. On the fifth day

we went on a crocodile cruise and to Flip Out (trampolining). We

saw crocs jumping on the cruise and it was amazing. At Flip Out

Luke pulled me aside and said that I’m doing my front flips too

close to the edge. We went back to camp for dinner, showers and

talent quest (I came second)!

On the sixth day we went to the wave pool which was not as fun

as it sounds. We went back to camp for dinner, showers,

presentation and bed. On the seventh day all the campers had to

pack to get ready to go home. I got home at 1:30am on Sunday

so I went to bed and woke up at 11:30am on Sunday. I was still

tired. I think it was the best trip that I have ever been on because

I had so much fun especially when I was having a shower and a

python went up my leg and I picked it up then started to pat it.

Support Unit Students Camp with Crocs in the Northern Territory

The students and staff from the Support Unit would like wish Mr Rossetti all the best as he is taking some extended leave from the beginning of Term 3. We would also like to welcome Ms Hulbert who has joined the Support Unit and will be working with the Opal Class.

Two of our students had an exciting start to the school holidays, spending a week in the Northern Territory at a camp sponsored by the Variety Club. Luke Dorman and Sarah Morgan share their accounts of this opportunity of a lifetime. And yes, the python incident with Sarah really did happen!

TERM 3 – WEEK 2 – 2017

BALANCING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT

Greetings from the English Faculty. Winter is upon us, and despite the chill of the wind and frost, the students have been warming to a great variety of activities and tasks.

In Years 7 and 9, students are reading and responding to their literature study. This involves the close study of a novel and the consideration of its setting, characters, language and themes. The texts range from Tim Winton’s Blueback, to Rodman Philbrick’s beautiful tale, Freak the Mighty.

Years 8 and 10 are examining the relationships between texts, and how composers often adapt and transform texts to suit a new and different audience. This will allow students to consider adaptations of Shakespearean plays, as well as modern transformations of poetry and novel into film.

In Year 11 English Studies, students are exploring a unit titled, ‘Part of the Family’. In Standard, it’s Tim Winton’s The Boy Behind the Curtain, and in Advanced, George Orwell’s important novel Animal Farm is under the microscope, along with the concept of satire.

In Year 12, it’s time for students to sit their trial exams. We wish them well in this important aspect of their final studies. In Year 12 Extension 2, the final drafts of students’ major works have been submitted. These works are the culmination of extensive study and writing throughout the entire year. Well done to those students!

In other news: the ALERT literacy program continues to be implemented with success across Years 7 and 8; Ms Lindstrom and Mr Cousin attended an important Curriculum Conference in Sydney; Year 7 Hunter have produced a range of interesting ‘black-out poetry’ (see examples above); the wonderful Ms Lee, a highly regarded recent university graduate, returned to the faculty as a casual teacher; the faculty also welcomed the highly competent university intern teacher, Mr Lewis Horne; and the lovely Ms Lewis (pictured above) began her maternity leave - her classes to be cared for by the experienced Mr Travis Megale.

We look forward to meeting parents and carers at next week’s Parent Teacher evening, and we thank students and families for their effort and commitment. Best wishes from the English Faculty.

Novel Ideas in English

Subject selection information evenings were held this week for Year 10 students and their parents and carers ahead of final subject selection interviews next week for Year 11 2018. These events were well attended and provided course information to help students make decisions for their future studies. Students should use these next few days to speak to relevant teachers to help in their decision-making and finalising subject choices before the individual student meetings next week.

TERM 3 – WEEK 2 – 2017

BALANCING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT

April: Jade Hemaridis

Jade is a perennial winner of our Sportsperson of the Month

awards due to the talent and work ethic she possesses along

with the outstanding achievements she gains in the sport of

Softball. Playing as a catcher she is a natural leader in every

team she plays for, a point exemplified by her being named

captain of the National Championship winning NSW team at

the Pacific School Games.

This year she has been selected in every representative team

possible in the school sport system. Possessing dual

Australian and Italian citizenship, in June this year she was

selected in the Italian U/19 Softball team for a European

tournament where she played against the French and Czech

Republic National teams. Well done Jade!

May: Brandon Tangaroa

Brandon is a member of Hunter Sports High’s Baseball

program and has only recently returned to school after a

month in the United States where he was representing the

Australian U/15 Baseball team. While in the States he played

matches against representative teams from LA, San

Francisco and San Diego as well as a series of matches

against the Mexican National team. This was a wonderful

experience and achievement for someone still only in Year 8.

Congratulations Brandon!

June: Annalee Grove

Annalee is a member of our Football program. As a goal

keeper she plays her club football for the Emerging Jets and

just spent the school holidays in Canberra representing the

Australian Under 20 National team in a series of matches

against the USA and Canada. Congratulations Annalee!

Sportspeople of the Month:

Congratulations to our Open Touch Football team who are

through to the finals of the CHS Touch competition after an 8-

3 win over Wagga High School last week. The state’s top ten

teams will fight out the finals in Gosford on 18-19 August. We

wish them all the very best as they prepare for the tournament

decider!

Touch Team in Top Ten:

Thank you to Body Science

STUDENT WELFARE at HSHS: Keeping Our Students Safe

Our student welfare page lets students, parents and carers know about some of the great programs

and support services that are available to students and their families at Hunter Sports High School

and in the local community.

Quote of the Week:

Love Me Mission

The Love Me Mission is returning to HSHS on Friday 4th August

for our Year 7 and 8 girls after its successful launch last year.

The Love Me Mission inspires others to find peace and

happiness through a sense of gratitude and self-discovery.

Notes will be out to students very soon.

Attendance

A big congratulations to those students who received a

commendation letter sent home for above 95% attendance so

far this year. Just a reminder that any absences must be

explained with a note from home preferably on the very next

day back to school.

Website of the Week

Cheap Thrills Production

Brainstorm Productions presented the one man show of

Cheap Thrills to our Year 10 and 11 cohort. This production

highlighted the importance of making good decisions and

how they can have a dramatic and lasting effect on the lives

of many people. The students were very positive about the

performance and thoroughly enjoyed it.

NRMA Road Safety Presentation

Our interactive free NRMA presentation given on the last

week of school was also successful. The safety program

addressed road safety issues our students may encounter

on the road to their independence. There was great

discussion in the group and it is hoped that we have instilled

a mindful attitude towards road safety in the future.
