What is hunger?

For most people in developed countries, being hungry is the uncomfortable feeling you get if you skip lunch. But it’s very different if you’re one of the hundreds of millions who don’t get enough to eat every single day.

For people across the world, hunger lasts all day, every day, year in, year out. They have insufficient food to be active and healthy and they don’t get all the vitamins and minerals the body needs to function well.

What causes this?

The key causes of hunger are natural disasters, conflict, poverty, poor agricultural infrastructure and over-exploitation of the environment.

Recently, financial and economic crises, and the drastic increase in food prices in 2008 have pushed even more people into hunger.

925 million people do not have enough to eat - more than the combined populations of USA, Canada and the European Union

How does it affect a person?

When people lack access to sufficient amounts of nutritious food for normal growth and development and an active and healthy life, they don’t get all the vitamins and minerals the body needs to function well.

This leads to illness and temporary or permanent damage to their health.

How can YOU help fix this problem?

An important part of ending hunger is to reach and influence those with the power to affect change. You can do this at any age. We need to tell key decision-makers and politicians, local, national and international, that global hunger is a great injustice and totally unacceptable.

Sign the 1 Billion Hungry petition calling for action to end global hunger.

It is a powerful way to tell political leaders that we the people demand an end to global hunger. A petition like this gets the message across loud and clear.
