12014 ANNUAL REPORTFOOD BANK FOR NEW YORK CITY

DEAR FRIENDS,Over the past year, we have witnessed the need for emergency food in our city increase as the resources required to combat poverty and hunger have decreased. The difference now is that we are seeing the need through a more focused lens. Hardship greets millions of New Yorkers every morning, a situation made a thousand times worse since cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps) decreased the very benefits they need to survive. So many of the food pantries and soup kitchens in our network, from the Bronx to Staten Island, faced longer lines and food shortages as a result of these cuts. Our city is missing 250 million meals—a huge Meal Gap that is more deeply entrenched within certain communities. But we know where hunger is most concentrated. We know the specific neighborhoods where lack and want color New Yorkers’ lives in the greatest degrees. As more and more of our neighbors find it harder to survive in our city with dignity, Food Bank For New York City is showing up with new and innovative ways to help.

This isn’t about any city. This is about OUR city. In every borough, everyone in the Food Bank family is working diligently to ensure that low-income New Yorkers have enough to eat and have the services necessary to get back on their feet. From the community champions within our citywide network of over 1,000 charities and schools, to the thousands of dedicated volunteers who fuel Food Bank’s mission, to the partners and supporters who make our work possible, we are all a part of one story—the story of New York City. And the plot of our story, the strategic driver of our work as we tackle hunger and poverty at its core, is Food, Funds, Focus.

Food is the heart and soul of our mission. Thanks to advances in our processes and operations, we distributed 76.7 million pounds of food this year, resulting in 63 million meals, and our multilayered work to help people access SNAP citywide yielded more than $32 million in food purchasing power.

But we also understand that the battle against hunger cannot be fought via food alone. The underlying cause of hunger—namely, poverty—must be addressed as well.

As we took a closer look at where hunger lives today—the communities where it is most concentrated—Food Bank made a concerted effort to boost the funds available to working families by targeting more of our free tax assistance services in high Meal Gap areas. Ramping up the technology of our Tax and Financial Services Program paid amazing dividends for New Yorkers: $85 million in refunds to those who need it most.

By taking a bold strategic approach that puts more focus on the communities of highest need throughout the five boroughs, Food Bank is increasing resources in those areas and helping to build the capacity of charities serving the people who live there. The accomplishments we’ve made in the last year as we work to close the Meal Gap have only been possible because of your support and partnership. As New Yorkers, we are in this together, and it is our shared commitment to ending hunger in our city that will change the story for millions of our neighbors who are struggling to survive.

I was homeless at one time, sleeping on the train and in the park,” says Nathaniel. “But I remembered what my grandmother always told me: ‘When your back is against the wall, call on the Lord.’ That’s what I did, and He delivered me.” The challenges since then have been tough, but Nathaniel is grateful that he has a place to turn for help. “I go to Other People in Need to eat and get food from the pantry. I also go to the St. John’s Bread and Life truck for hot food and information on things like health insur-ance. It feels good to know that Food Bank is here for me, and that there are people in this city caring about others.”

FOOD TO MORE PEOPLEMOREFilling the plates of our neighbors who are struggling is at the

center of Food Bank For New York City’s mission: 80% of our

program expenses are dedicated to securing and distrib-

uting food. Data gleaned from the Meal Gap—New York

City’s official measure of food insecurity—has enabled us to

pinpoint the highest-need areas in the city. With more than

20 trucks on the road daily, we set a strategic goal this past

fiscal year to increase the amount of nutritious food distrib-

uted from our 90,000-square-foot warehouse in the Bronx to

communities that need it most. We are accomplishing this

by continuously widening New Yorkers’ access to emergen-

cy food via our network of over 1,000 member charities and

schools citywide. Food Bank is focusing more resources—

food, training and capacity-building—on charities in neigh-

borhoods where hunger is most concentrated, as well as on

programs within those communities that are eager to offer

a broad range of anti-hunger solutions.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERSSTRENGTH IN NUMBERSIn high-need communities nothing is convenient. Well-

stocked grocery stores are lacking, access to benefits

is scarce, and anti-poverty services are in short supply.

Residents must travel outside of their communities to get

what they need, or suffer the alternative: doing without

meals. Our city is missing 250 million meals and Food Bank is

working to close this staggering Meal Gap. By bringing more

resources and options, like our free Tax and Financial Services

Program, to people in the most vulnerable communities, we

help the working poor move toward financial stability and

away from pantry lines. We amped up the technology within

our tax services to expand our virtual sites, and introduced a

financial empowerment pilot program in schools that offers

families one-on-one financial counseling and education.

Food Bank also partnered with 600 agencies to advance

our SNAP outreach and bring New Yorkers millions of dollars

in food purchasing power.

Raising two children on one income hasn’t been easy for Naida, a 45-year-old mom from the Bronx who works as a fitness instructor and often lives paycheck-to-paycheck. “My oldest daughter is disabled, and sometimes I have to pay for unexpected prescriptions,” she says. “Plus, with two growing girls, I try to cook healthy, but it’s not cheap. Food prices keep going up.” Now she is getting the help she needs. “There aren’t many resources in the Bronx for people like me who are struggling. So I go to Harlem to get my taxes done for free at Food Bank, and I applied for SNAP there, too. It was great doing everything in one place.”

Several nights a week you’ll find Joe enjoying dinner with other seniors at SAGE, a Food Bank member charity in Manhattan. “Knowing that I can come here for a meal and to get food from the pantry has been a big help,” he says. Joe has his share of health problems, including diabetes and a cardiac condition. As a senior living alone on a limited budget, he worries about managing money without sacrificing his health needs. Having access to free, nutritious food gives him peace of mind. “Poverty affects so many of us seniors. My medications are expensive, but they’re a priority. If I wasn’t part of a program that helps defray my food costs, I’d be in trouble.”

CLOSED DOORSBEHINDPoverty has become entrenched in our city, and where

there is poverty there is hunger, which impacts 1.4 million

New Yorkers, including the most vulnerable among us—

seniors and children. At Food Bank, we open the doors on

hunger, meet it where it lives, and provide people with the

food and services they need. In Fiscal Year 2014, Food Bank’s

mobile vehicles helped to get services to thousands of

seniors living in Hurricane Sandy-ravaged communities. We

also launched senior pantries that have designated senior

hours and increased outreach to seniors about benefits such

as SNAP. In addition, our backpack and campus pantry

programs have expanded to more elementary schools,

providing our city’s poorest children and their families

with increased access to healthy meals. What’s more, our

deepened partnership with The City University of New York

(CUNY) will expand Food Bank’s existing footprint on CUNY

campuses, bringing pantries to additional CUNY schools

and enabling us to provide larger numbers of low-income

college students with access to emergency food.

Limited funds shouldn’t have to mean a limit to good nutrition.

As Food Bank works to close our city’s Meal Gap we also are

ensuring that low-income New Yorkers have the know-how

to stretch their food dollars without sacrificing nutrition. Our

continuously growing CookShop program provides nutrition

and health education to thousands of children at partner

schools and charities across the city. Parents also take part in

our programming, learning strategies to eat healthfully on a

budget. The impact of our CookShop expansion is measured

in more than just nutritional knowledge gained; it is also

measured in healthier meals.

Like thousands of other New Yorkers, Sabina, 54, is looking for work. “It’s been hard,” says Sabina, who was laid off from her housekeeping position. “I think people want someone younger.” With a family of five and bills piling up, she’s had to make tough choices. “Sometimes we have to put off paying bills in order to cover rent. The price of food has made shopping tough too. I want my family to be healthier and a big part of that comes from what you eat. I’m thankful that I can go to Hour Children Food Pantry to get fresh produce and other food. It helps my budget and helps me make healthier meals for my family.”

TER

THE POWER OFWe expanded our Tiered Engagement Network (TEN) within the highest Meal Gap areas to

better serve our most vulnerable neighbors—and the amount of food and benefits we’re able

to provide have increased dramatically because of it. Reducing the Meal Gap in the highest-

need communities, such as the South Bronx and Jamaica, Queens, requires going beyond

the expected. By leveraging our ability to create neighborhood networks that provide an

array of poverty-fighting resources, Food Bank For New York City is taking collective impact to

the next level. TEN brings together local community-based organizations, including schools,

enabling them to collaborate with one another and make critical benefits like SNAP, free tax

services, health care, health insurance, housing, financial counseling, emergency food, and

more easily accessible to the people they serve.

SERVING A GROWING NEED“ Every time you think you’ve got a hold of this thing, more people come through the door. The need is great and it’s growing. But TEN is helping us make a real difference and collaborate with other programs. Families are referred to us through TEN because we offer so many services under one roof. Thanks to Food Bank For New York City, we can also give people a round-trip MetroCard to return home. This lets them get the services they need without depleting the limited money they have.”

BENEFITS BEYOND FOOD“ People don’t know what’s out there for them. They don’t realize that they’re eligible for SNAP. Education is the first step. Trust is just as important, and we have it because we’re part of the community. With the training we received from Food Bank we can pre-screen for SNAP, do the applications, make referrals for other resources. Being a part of TEN is making a difference for the people we serve.”

ANDRE BROADY Executive Director of Genesis

Transitional Housing Ministries, Inc. in Jamaica, Queens

REACHING FAR AND WIDE“ TEN has been a blessing because it opens up other avenues that the South Bronx doesn’t have and helps us fill the gaps in service. If we don’t offer a particular service, being a part of Food Bank’s TEN network means I can refer people to my sister agencies on the North side that do offer it. We get referrals, too. TEN expands the amount of service my community as a whole receives.”

ANGEL CABALLERO Executive Director of

The Davidson Community Center in the Bronx

A HAVEN FOR HOPE“ People come to our church lost and bewildered, and our role is to eliminate some of the obstacles they face to getting the resources they need. TEN helps us provide the pathway. We have a food pantry onsite, but not the broader services that are so desperately needed. TEN gives us the capacity to be proactive and connect people to other organizations for housing, SNAP and more. People come here for food, get referred to services, find a caring atmosphere, and leave with a lot of hope.”
