HRCR OPEN DAY REMINDER
Don’t forget to put the HRCR Open Day in your diary for Saturday the 12th January. This will be the 11th Annual Event, which has become well established as the best place to meet friends, gain valuable advice and plan your motorsport year. The theme this time will be the 60th anniversary of BMC’s Mini, so HRCR Mini Cup competitors past and present will take the fore. It is held at the British Motor Museum at Gaydon, Warwickshire, (M40 Junc 12). Opening from 9:30am – 3.30pm it is free to visit, but there will be a charge to visit the Museum itself. More details on this nearer the time.
‘old Stager’ and Minisport Cup round 7 the Ford Parts Cheviot Stages
Ray Cunningham and Jared Gill sealed their Championship success on both the ‘old Stager’ and Mini Sport Cup Challenges but it wasn’t easy!
Fifteen crews made the trip to the Ford Parts Cheviot Stages on the 28th October over the Otterburn
ranges. The roads here are challenging at the best of times but throw into the mix conditions that
changed from torrential rain, snow, hail and bright sunshine whilst all the time having a bitter wind to
contend with and this could easily be described as the toughest event of the year.
At the front of the field Ray and Jared started out by taking the fastest time on the first stage but they
were always challenged by open class contender John and Martin Cressey and Clive King and Anton
Bird, the three crews finally finishing in this order. All crews were reporting difficulty dealing with the

conditions especially aquaplaning. Accidents resulted in several stages being lost and unfortunately the
open class Mini of Ian Clare and Antony Elkes went off on stage 7.
As Ray and Jared have taken the overall position the battle for top Category 1 car continues between
Clive King and Anton Bird and Shane Gamble and Bob Ward. In the Mini Sport Cup Jim Brindle and Sam
Bould are still leading despite not competing at weekend but again Clive and Anton are close behind.
Everything is very close at the top of Category 2 with potentially four crews still in contention for the top
spot with Paul Kendrick and Luke Green in their Escort RS1600 currently being the highest placed none
Mini helped again by a good run at weekend, though the car did show some signs of contact with a
chicane.
A steady run by Craig King and Clare Bird in the 1275GT ensured they will take the overall Category 3
award of the ‘old Stager’ Championship.
Second in the open class for Louise Thomas and Heidi Woodcock was enough for them to maintain their
Championship lead from Martin Melling who finished third in class. With John Cressey taking top spot on
the day and still in contention.
Andrew Jarman and Paul Davis recently signed up for the Championship with their 1300 Mini and this
was their first ever event and they finished, it can only get easier!
The next and final round is the Hall Trophy on the 24th November at Blyton Park and even though some
top spots are claimed there are still plenty of class positions to be sorted and with twenty cars already
entered it should be an exciting day!
Full report to follow in ‘old Stager’
Ian Clare and Antony Elkes
Following their accident on stage 7 Ian Clare and Antony Elkes were taken to hospital at Newcastle both
suffering from back pain and at the time of writing both are still in hospital but are making good progress.
All involved in the Championship wish them a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing them out again
soon.
Welcome to the November 2018 Clubmans newsletter.
2018 HRCR Hagerty Insurance Clubmans Road Rally Championship
Hello everyone
October had just the one rally in the championship, but what a rally it was! The notorious Devils Own rally was
filled within three days of opening, but the rally started to take its toll even before it had begun. A week before the
event two cars had to drop out and the reserve list had already been used so no further replacements were
forthcoming. Then on the Friday after arrival in the South Lakes, Phil Cheek found that his Hartwell Sprint
Avenger had a broken speedo cable. Not necessarily a stopper but as the Brantz trip was connected to it there
was no distance measurement in the car, so withdrawal was the only option. Another car that nearly didn’t make it was the Whyte’s sisters’ MG Maestro that was involved in a collision whilst travelling to the event. However, a
borrowed brake lamp ensured that they made the start line albeit battered and bruised.
The day started overcast with drizzle in the air which didn’t help the mood of some drivers and navigators who
had experience of the rally from previous years. Also in the back of people’s minds was the four inches of rain that had fallen the previous weekend. This was to make itself felt as the rally progressed, and many fell victim to
its effects, both Master and Novice alike.

First car away was at 1231 with a transit to a test site which involved a tight farmyard to negotiate. Then it was on
to a straightforward pre-plot regularity to get the navigators warmed up with some very low penalties accrued
especially amongst the top ten. Lower down the order, local traffic caused some issues with some competitors on
occasions, with very little opportunity to catch up.
It was then into four tests on the bounce. Two were in a quarry which provided the drivers with an opportunity to
not only show their skill in going sideways but also how to get a car filthy in 3 minutes. Not to worry though, there
was a car wash coming. The next test was another tight farmyard section through a long barn where cows were
feeding but they didn’t really seem that interested in the spectacle going on around them.
Regularity 2 was a pre-plot using map features albeit with a sting in the middle. Many of the features were
chevrons showing up and down sections however one down section ended at a ford with an ITC visible on the
other side. Remember that 4 inches of rain?

280SL. Photo courtesy of Tony North
Championship leaders Ian Crammond and Matthew Vokes ended up stranded as the intake on their Mercedes
was so low that it filled the engine with water. After having emptied the cylinders they managed to get it going
and successfully completed the rally in a very creditable 10th place. They were just one car amongst many who
had issues at that section, the authors included.

Next up was quite a long regularity with 5 IRTC’s in the narrow lanes and onto a slippery wooded section with
some cars struggling for grip in places. The authors MGB had a smashed valance as a result but judicious use of
gaffer tape held everything together until the end of the rally. MTC 2 followed at the Lakeland Motor museum
where crews carried out repairs as required and prepared for the night sections. A welcome break for food was
also had although the navigators were still plotting furiously as was the case throughout the day.
Then it was out into the dark. Reg 4 involved a large section in Grizedale Forest and with the average speed
requirement of 30mph there was little room for error. Once again though the skill of the top crews showed through
with some giving away only 8 seconds across 5 IRTC’s.
A cheeky passage check on a transit route then caught out a number of crews with a 5 minute penalty for those
who decided to take a short cut. Reg 5 was a short affair to position crews for regularity 6 that spelt Devils Own.
Matt Warren and Andy Pullan in the Mk1 Ford Escort suffered a prop-shaft failure after the second IRTC and
missed the remaining controls and tests with the result that Nicky Staniforth jumped to second place in the
Championship.

Regularity 7 was another long one with 5 timing checks and 9 speed changes to make sure everyone was still
awake. OTL was becoming an issue for some of the crews down the field despite pressing on as the organisers
had encouraged at the drivers brief. However, at test 7 there were few delays and being short and fast along a
bumpy farm track only took a about minute. However, the dried out Mercedes SL280 of Crammond and Vokes
showed no evidence from their previous encounter and posted the fastest time of only 50 seconds.
The final sting in the tail was Reg 8 on the Westmorland showground. With very little to guide the crews, a very
well calibrated trip was needed to find the correct turn on the gravel tracks across the car park area in the dark.
Most managed to find their way in the end and the relieved crews made it to the finish at MTC 3.
The Devils Own rally was a fitting end to the season and with only 50 cars out of 62 finishing it remains one of the
most challenging on the calendar. Clerk of the course Martyn Taylor and his team are to be congratulated for
putting on such a great event. This will be Martyn’s last Devils Own so we shall have to see who replaces him and whether the rally can maintain its reputation in the coming years. No pressure there then.
Les Andrew and Gary Evans First Championship experts Photo courtesy of Tony Large
So to the results. Overall winner of the Devils Own for the third year running was Guy Woodcock with Ali Proctor
as his navigator. Three different years and three different navs, a fantastic achievement. First HRCR Clubmans
championship member was John Haygarth and Bobby Hargreaves in the Opel Kadett Rallye Leading the way for
the experts in 13th place was Les Andrew and Gary Evans in the MGBGT. First Novice in 23rd place was Phil
Wood and Iain Miller in the Volvo P1800. After a mixed season Phil and Iain must be very pleased to be able to
finish on a high note.
A special mention for IainTullie who was back in action for the first time since the accident on the Vale of Clywd
and with Howard Warren in the Porsche 911, managed 19th place. Good to have you back Iain.
The HRCR Amazon Cars Challenge cup is where the rally cars are driven to and from the event. On this event it
was won by Simon Mellings and Cath Woodman in the Nissan Stanza.

As the season comes to a close the final positions within the championship have just about been decided.
However we are still awaiting decision from the MSA regarding the results on the St Wilfrids and as such all
results within this newsletter are preliminary until it is known otherwise.
Well clear though on the drivers table with a margin of 23 points is Ian Crammond with John Haygarth second on
337 and Thomas Bricknall third on 334. Les Andrew managed to overhaul Andrew Johnson in the expert class
and is 7 points ahead. The Novice section was decided on the Devils Own with the author requiring 9 points to
get ahead of Clive Martin. It however was not to be and Clive hung on to best overall Novice Driver by 2 points.
On the Navigators Championship, the overall winner was Matthew Vokes, however Andy Pullan’s prop-shaft
failure spoiled his championship with him being pushed down to 4th behind Nicky Staniforth and Roger Bricknall.
Well clear of the expert pack is Martin Phaff on 282 points. We shall see if his Championship Secretary duties will
affect his performance in the 2019 season. Anji Martin held on to first overall Novice beating Sarah Binstead by
just 2 points which is a great achievement considering this is Sarah’s first season and experience of rallying.
Names in Red – Amazon Cars Challenge Cup
So thinking of next year already some dates for your diary:
Jan 12 HRCR Open Day at Gaydon
Feb 16 Annual prize giving and dinner dance at the Woodland Grange, Leamington Spa
June 14-16 HRCR Clubman Rally Championship Classic 35:
2019 is the club’s 35th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, the HRCR team are planning a two-day, no-
nonsense, Clubman’s Road Rally with a straightforward tulip and descriptive road book. The route will include
regularities and special tests on sealed surfaces. It is planned that some of these will be at well-known motor
sport venues. The entry will be limited to just 60 crews and the event will be based at the Tillington Hall Hotel,
Stafford.
I hope to see many of you at the Open Day in January

CATEGORY ONE CREW CROWNED CHAMPIONS
Congratulations to Ken Davies and Alan Jones who have been crowned overall winners of the West Wales Rally
Spares HRCR Stage Masters Challenge 2018.
Their victory was sealed with one round to go after the cancellation of the Wyedean Rally.
This year they have shown consistency in finishing all the rounds they entered matching that with a speed to get
them to the end of some of the most challenging rallies in the UK.
Ken Davies from Hereford owns KGD Industrial Services based at Rotherwas Industrial Estate, this year he has
competed on 13 rallies with Alan.
Run by Quick Motorsport based in Hereford the duo had a packed year competing with the Volvo 122s in the
forests and the Lotus Cortina GT on asphalt events. They also took part on the Midnight Sun Rally based in
Sweden and the Rally Wales GB.
Despite opposition from a brace of Mini competitors and a VW Beetle they have gained maximum points on all
four rounds they competed on.
Starting in March they took an easy win on the AGBO Stages after their main rivals ran into mechanical troubles,
changing to the forest car it was another 35 points gained.
Changing back to asphalt they had a mechanical scare themselves on the Dixies Challenge but managed to limp
round before ending their campaign with a clear run on the Brawdy Stages in July on the hottest day of the year.
To finish a fantastic year for the pair they will be flying out to New Zealand to take part in the Silver Fern event in
Pinto engine Group 4 Escort. The 8-day event will cover more than 1,000 competitive kilometres over 50 stages.
Ken and Alan will pick up their well-deserved trophies at the HRCR awards evening in February.
Scenic Tour News
Papplewick, finish venue of Tony Matthews Classic
With just 1 event left to go in the 2018 HRCR Scenic Tour Series calendar, I can’t believe how quickly my first season as series secretary has flown by. It’s been a great year with record numbers of HRCR members entered on the 16 tours that made up the series. Up to the Autumn Leaves, there have been no less than 196 members who have taken part in the series with at least 51 of these having entered 3 or more events and 6 of you having excelled by entering no less than10 events !! Across the 16 Tours in the series, HRCR has provided an incredible 414 entrants !! Our members have, on some tours, made up 65% of the entry - a great performance which demonstrates the attraction of Scenic Tours and the quality of the what must surely be some of the best events in the country?
Planning for the 2019 series is now well under way and its looking to be a great year already. The series was very well supported this year and it is hoped that we may have some very exciting news to announce in the next Old Stager, making the series even more attractive to HRCR members for the coming year !! In the meantime, if anyone has any views on things they like, or don’t like, seeing in the tours, then please let me know on [email protected]
Bet this was fun down the lanes !!
Final Tour of the Year
Autumn Leaves Scenic Tour - Sat 3rd November Organised by HRCR Dean & The Marches, it is appropriate that the Autumn Leaves was the final event of the 2018 HRCR Scenic Tour Series. A Saturday event, this years Autumn Leaves started and finished at last years finish venue - the Forest Hills Golf Club, near Coleford. This is a great venue with plenty of space, good service and very good food. Starting at 10:00, the 120 mile route was totally confined to the Royal Forest of Dean. The event ran in its usual 3 section format and was defined in the excellent full colour Roadbook. The event
included various Check Points and Code Bards used for route verification purposes, a number of them being manned checks. As an added attraction, the organisers again asked people taking part to dress in “Clothing from the era of the vehicle being used” - although not compulsory it added to the occasion. A full report will appear in the Old Stager magazine so you’ll have to wait till then to find out the winners !!
Cheers
Kevin
Anyone recognise this vehicle seen on the Gordon Bennett Tour ? Clue - it was built in the Midlands !

HRCR LOCAL AREA NEWS
DEAN & MARCHES
A quick change of plan had to be implemented for our October meeting. The original venue became unavailable, so we visited the factory of EDM in Cinderford. EDM buy in used wire cut / spark erosion machines, refurbish them and then resell. We were able to learn all about spark erosion / wire cutting and how accurate, quick and easy to programme it is. As a demonstration a small gear wheel was cut out of a block of alloy whilst we watched. A very interesting evening. Our November meeting will be on Monday 19th November at 7.30 pm meeting at Parkend Club, deep in the Forest of Dean for our annual skittles evening. Parkend Club is at 162/617080 or GL15 4JE. The ‘slot’ into the Club is difficult to find. As always everyone is welcome, friends and family. Stuart Harrold
