Actually I attended Trinity College in Chicago for one year before transferring to Taylor University. I received my bachelors degree in art education from Taylor in 1971. In 1972 I was hired by BCSC to teach art. I began working towards my masters degree at IU in the summer of 1974 and completed it in 1977.

Both Hillary and I attend Maine South H. S. in Park Ridge, IL. I was a sophomore when Hillary was a senior. We ran in different circles and didn’t know one another. However, just think what would have happened if we had met. Hillary obviously would have fallen madly in love with me and pursued me until I agreed to marry her. Then she would have pestered me to become President. And what about poor Bill Clinton, who would he find to marry? And would he have ever become President?

In 1970 America was in the midst of the Viet Nam War and the draft lottery was enacted. My number was 88, which meant I would be drafted as soon as I graduated from Taylor University. To avoid the draft and a high percentage chance of going to Viet nam I enlisted in the Naval Air Reserves. I was a reservist throughout my early teaching years, from 1971 to 1977. My job in the Navy was entitled, “aviations structural mechanic”, which meant I pounded rivets into airplanes.

If you first selected “wild child” or “class clown” that means you think I was a trouble maker and should be ashamed of yourself for making such rash judgments about me. If you on the other hand selected “honor student” that means you’re a logical person who picked what obviously seemed correct. The truth however, is that I was a poor student. I mention this not for the purpose of putting myself down, but to illustrate a point, which is, success comes to those who are willing to work. Thankfully, I saw the light and started working at it.

This just goes to show that good fortune comes to everyone every once in a while. Luckily Hillary never ensnared me, so I was free to court my true honey pie.

During the summer of 1971 I rode with a bicycling group called “Wandering Wheels”. Before flying to Belgium to begin our trip, we all met in New York where we were presented the key to the city. Once in Belgium we began a six week trip that took us through nine countries. The total distance we rode was 3000 miles. We averaged between 80 and 100 miles a day. The entire trip was filmed by a professional travel photographer. Every once in a while his film still shows up on television.

That’s right, we would settle the matter between us. I have no desire to talk with your parents about what you wear to school and the deans are too busy to be bothered with your poor choices in clothing. Also, even though you made a stupid choice, I don’t think you deserve to be made fun of in front of others. So the moral of the story is, if you don’t like wearing your T-shirts inside out, don’t wear shirts with inappropriate messages.

First of all, I have no desire to be an administrator creating piles and piles of charts and papers. So if you though I was someone wanting to create the master plan you were wrong. Second, I don’t have a temper. Perhaps that’s because I have a personality that prohibits emotional outbursts. Third, I have no problem admitting when I’m wrong. I guess that’s because when your wrong as much as I am it’s just easier just to admit it. What this all means then is that I’m a stubborn person. At times this is a good trait, like when I’m trying to solve a problem, but at other times, like letting go of a bad idea, it can cause problems.

That’s right, if everyone works hard enough to earn an “A” we all make “A’s” and if no one works, we could all make “F’s”. Typically though, about one third of the class will make “A’s”, one third “B’s” and one third “C’s, D’s and F’s”. If you want to be in the group making “A’s & B’s just work hard, ask questions and don’t waste time.

I seldom give detention because that penalizes me as well as you. I end up having to track you down to make sure the detention was completed and then do endless paperwork if it wasn’t done. Yelling and screaming never seems to work for me, nor does deducting points from your grade, which I don’t believe I’m allowed to do anyway for tardies. So then, what I will do is warn you on the first four tardies and then on the fifth turn you over to the deans. The deans will then assign you one day of ISS.

I don’t believe art is an enigma that few understand. If that’s what you believe, hopefully this class will break down that perception; as well as to show how art influences all of our lives, whether we know it or not. As for art talent, here’s how I see it. In a math class some students are naturally gifted and catch on much faster than others. Those who lag behind often find that they have to work harder to keep up. The same is true in art, some students are more gifted than others and those who are less skilled have to work harder. Not having highly developed art skills however, is never a satisfactory excuse for not working.

My father took me fishing when I was just a little boy. We would fish for small pan fish, bluegills and the like. One day however, I managed to hook and land a large Northern Pike. For a boy of about five it was a monster. From that day on fishing became my thing.
