How to Think Like a Lawyer

If you want to sound professional and have reason and logic to back you up then really, you want to

sound like a lawyer or real Provo Attorney. Most of us either don’t have the time or money to go to law

school for three years to sound like one so how can we learn on our own.

First, find out what the real argument is when someone brings a problem forward. Learn to analyze and

take the problem apart in order to see the different angles of the problem.

Second, pay attention to everything! That means everything that you hear or read can be used as

evidence if used in the right light.

Third, don’t ever be afraid of questioning. Questions will be your best friend

especially in interviews, or when you are questioning the person you are arguing

with. Sometimes you can lead with questions in a way that supports your

argument.

Fourth, pay attention to the details of even the other side. You need to know

both sides of an argument in order to make any reasonable argument. Decide

if you have a strong basis and if you can actually argue your side with logic and

reason.

More Than One Point of View

Fifth, take things from different perspectives. Great lawyers are able to put themselves in other’s shoes

and see things from their point of view. For instance you may want to put yourself in the shoes of an

outsider to get a less biased opinion or to look at evidence in a different way.

Sixth, build up an inventory of solid evidence. Everything that supports your claims should be kept and

used in arguments. This will help back up any of your words that need to be backed up.

Seventh, be clear and don’t go in circles. The more wordy and expressive you get the more lost the

audience will get. It is much better to have a short and clear argument that leaves an impression.

Eighth, keep your cool. The best lawyers are able to stay calm and not raise their voices or lose control

of the speed of their verbiage. This will make you seem much more credible in the eyes of others and

will show that you have confidence in what you are presenting. The more showy people get the less

credible people become.

Ninth, use your common sense. If something sounds funny then it

should be questioned out loud. Using your instincts is important as

well. If you feel like something is out of place or doesn’t seem right then you should take it apart and

look at it again.

Tenth, learn how to manipulate information so that it supports your position. Your goal is to influence

and persuade not only your opponent but others around you.

Really if you want to look like a lawyer you need to seem like an authority. Lawyers learn how to

memorize and share information off the top of their tongue. If you are able to recite “law” like a true

intellectual then you will seem like an authority and will make your opponents nervous.

If you really want to learn how to sound like a lawyer then meeting with a real Provo Attorney may be

your best bet.
