“If you strive for simplicity, you are more likely to reach the viewer”

William Albert Allard

There is a problem with slideware…

Page 5: How to take your slides to the next level
Page 6: How to take your slides to the next level

You hit “New Slide” and you get something like

this …

Page 7: How to take your slides to the next level
Page 8: How to take your slides to the next level
Page 9: How to take your slides to the next level

Let’s try again !

Problem ?

TooManyBullet pointsToo wordy

With lots of sub-bullets to elaborate the point

Result = Audience asleep

Page 11: How to take your slides to the next level

Even this version does not exactly

light up the room, does it ?

Page 12: How to take your slides to the next level
Page 13: How to take your slides to the next level

Maybe once more ?

Page 14: How to take your slides to the next level

Most presenters use slidewareto produce stuff like this …

Page 15: How to take your slides to the next level
Page 16: How to take your slides to the next level

Which makes audience …

Page 17: How to take your slides to the next level
Page 18: How to take your slides to the next level

Too many words, too many …

Page 19: How to take your slides to the next level
Page 20: How to take your slides to the next level

Another wee problem with putting

too much words on the screenMost people talk at …

Page 21: How to take your slides to the next level

150 wpm

Page 22: How to take your slides to the next level

Whereas most people read at …

Page 23: How to take your slides to the next level

250 wpm

When you give them something like this …

Page 24: How to take your slides to the next level

So when you put a huge number of words up on the screen like this, two things happen.(1) Audiences can read faster than you can talk, so they use all their brain capacity reading ahead, drawing their own conclusions and not really listening to you (2) they sit there, consciously or unconsciously thinking, “Why am I sitting here ? This bozo could just have emailed me his slides and I could have stayed at home !”

Page 25: How to take your slides to the next level

So, how can I migrate away from endless text in bullet

point format ?

Effective mentoring

Must-haves :• It is essential to the success of the process that the

mentor and novice have a clear vision of what it is that they want to accomplish together.

• The receptiveness of the inexperienced staff member is also vital.

• Plus, the mentor and less experienced staff member need to have time to meet regularly to discuss, plan and share ideas, and to observe and be observed by each other.

We have seen attempts to improve this kind of slide that

went this far …

Slides like that make us …

Let’s try again !

Page 33: How to take your slides to the next level

Clarity

How about a small image ?

Plus one word which appears

uppermost ?

Page 34: How to take your slides to the next level

Effective mentoring

• It is essential to the success of the process that the mentor and novice have a clear vision of what it is that they want to accomplish together.

Thus, all of this becomes what you SAY, supported by the crispy visual, rather than something the audience

has to read

Page 35: How to take your slides to the next level

And all the guff that was cluttering up

the screen now goes to live down here

Page 36: How to take your slides to the next level

Clarity

Repeat twice more

Page 37: How to take your slides to the next level

Clarity Receptivity Time

Page 38: How to take your slides to the next level

So you still say it, but neither you

nor the audience reads it

It’s all about innovative imagination !

and

It’s all about innovative imagination !

Go visual

Let the image tell your story

Absolutely NO bullet-points (till the end)

Design, DON’T decorate

Practice before presenting
