When your children are young, you have to do everything for them. As your children grow older and understand more, you can teach them how to help. It is best to start teaching children to pick up after themselves once they begin to walk and carry their toys around with them. You may even want to enforce a rule that requires that toys stay in the playroom. This does not require you to be mean or yell at the child. Instead, make it a fun game. Sing songs to your toddler while you clean in front of them. Children naturally copy their parents and long to please them. When your child puts the toy in an appropriate area cheer, clap and smile. You have to let them know that you are happy with them for cleaning up. Of course, at this age you can not expect them to keep toys organized. So, large toy boxes are best for young children. Having a toddler that can pick up their own toys can easily save you many hours per week that you could spend cleaning something else while your child is busy. When children reach school age they are ready to do a larger variety of chores. If you have a few children, you can create a chart that rotates the chores among them so that they do not get bored doing the same chores each day. If you only have one child you can allow them to share responsibility with you. Either way, you are showing them that everyone shares in the responsibility of the home. You might also want to consider rewarding them for doing their chores without being told more than once. You can either use money to reward them, or you can get creative. Some parents choose to say things like, "If you do all of your chores for a month straight, we can take a trip to the water park." This can give your child an incentive, but it is not something that you have to do. Some parents decide that chores are something that everyone must do without any reward other than having a clean home.
