NIDARA TIPSALL THINGS CHILDREN

When the lazy , sunny days of summer arrive and your child's schedule is loaded with swimming, cartoons, television, computer games and family vacations, it can be difficult to find time or make time for reading.

But children’s reading habits and skills don't have to stop just because school is closed. Here are some ways to make reading a natural part of their summer lives:

Explore your local neighbourhood library.

Every location has a local library to check out books and magazines that your children haven't read before. Many libraries have summer reading lists and reading contests for even the youngest of the borrowers. There are often incentives, such as a free book upon completing their summer reading lists. Young kids will feel extra grown-up checking out books with their own library card.

Read on the road.

Driving takes up a lot of time these days. With an average time spent of about 45 minutes in the car, this can be a great time to catch up that reading. Make sure the back seat is stocked with favourite books.

Make your own books.

Have your child make their own books that are illustrated. Encourage them to make the book about anything that is fun for them. Have them read it out loud when its done. The story can be from any part of their lives the find interesting.

Keep in touch.

Children don't have to go away to another place to write about summer vacation. Even if your family stays home this summer, encourage your child to send postcards, letters, or e-mails to friends, pen pals and relatives.

Keep up the reading rituals.

Children do what parents do. So, if you want your child to read, get a book yourself and give them company at a designated time. When this routine has been set, your child will automatically look forward to reading with you !

Reading is a great way to escape into other worlds. Encourage your child to experience the realm of literature any way you can.
