How to Make Sure your CPAP Mask is the Perfect Fit

When you begin your sleep apnoea treatment with the use of a CPAP machine, one of the most important things to get right is the fit of your CPAP mask. Your CPAP machine works by pushing pressured air from the CPAP unit to your mouth and throat through a hosing tube and mask. To ensure that you receive the benefit of the pressurised air and to ensure your own comfort, it is vital that your CPAP mask fits properly. In this article, we identify the factors that will affect the fit of your CPAP mask.

1. Size

The size of your CPAP mask is an important consideration in achieving the right fit as a good seal is necessary in order to ensure that you get the optimum benefit from your treatment. If you have to tighten your CPAP mask in order to achieve a good seal but this makes it uncomfortable to wear, then it is likely that you have the wrong size CPAP mask. Before making your final purchase, you should try on each mask to ensure that the size is right for your face as the sizing is not always the same across the different masks available such as Resmed masks online.

2. Positioning

The positioning of your CPAP mask will have an effect on how comfortable the mask is while you are wearing it. You should remember that our facial muscles loosen when we are lying down and so a CPAP mask that fits well when you are sitting up may not fit as well when you are lying down. Therefore, make sure that you try on your CPAP mask in both a sitting and reclining position when making your choice.

3. Headgear

When purchasing Resmed masks in Sydney, pay attention to the headgear strap and how it feels. Ensure that the headgear strap is not too tight or too loose as it’s the headgear strap that will keep your mask in place while it’s in use. If your headgear strap is too loose or too tight, try readjusting it or it may require replacement.

4. Type of mask

If your CPAP mask is properly fitted but still feels uncomfortable, you may need another type of mask. There are various other masks available such as a nasal pillow and nasal mask if the full CPAP mask is not for you.

If you experience any difficulties in fitting your mask, you should refer to the mask user guidelines in the first instance. If you still experience problems with the fit of your mask, contact your care provider or your equipment supplier.
