Hi. My name is Hannah Rose. This is my best friend Tyler.

Hannah Rose and Tyler were eating cookies at her house. Tyler

seemed really sad. “Why do you look so sad?” asked Hannah Rose.

“Someone made fun of me at school and I’ve been in a bad mood all

day,” said Tyler. “I know a really cool way to make your sad feelings

go away,” announced Hannah Rose. “You do? How?” asked Tyler.

Hannah Rose grabbed a big box full of balloons. “Pick a balloon,”

said Hannah Rose. Tyler picked a blue one. “Okay now let’s blow all

of your sad feelings into this balloon” said Hannah Rose.

He blew and blew and blew until all of his sad feelings were in the

balloon. (It was really big!) Then Hannah Rose tied the balloon.

Hannah Rose asked Tyler, “Are you sure all those sad feelings are in

there?” Tyler said, “Yes.”

Hannah Rose took the balloon and said to Tyler, “Now follow me

outside.” They walked outside. Hannah Rose held up the balloon and

asked once again, “Are you sure all those sad feelings are in here?”

Tyler shouted, “Yes! They’re all in there.” Then Hannah Rose let the

balloon go.

They watched the balloon fly high in the sky until they could not

see it any more. Hannah Rose asked Tyler “So, where are your sad

feelings now?” Tyler answered, “In the balloon.” Hannah Rose then

asked Tyler, “Where is the balloon?” “It’s gone,” he smiled.

I have used this many times with children and it has really helped. Obviously balloons can be dangerous for children, but with adult supervision it is a great technique.

Topics for Discussion

1. What a child feels when they are sad or angry

2. Why it is important to let it go

3. Other ways they might be able to get rid of

sad or angry feelings
