Masks have been used for all kinds of things throughout history. Every culture has its own way of creating masks and what we're going to do is we're going to look at some African masks. Actually, the inspiration for this mask made out of beans actually came from the masks of Africa. I think it was the used of the earth colors that really inspired me to choose beans since they've come from the earth and the colors are very earthy just by the nature of the beans. So, what you're going to need for this project is just too simple paper pulp form and this can be purchased in most arts stores and really inexpensive. And you might want to buy more than one because I think once you get started. You're really going to enjoy making masks on these forms. What I'm going to do first, is just trace around this mask form so that I can do a little planning ahead of time, and I'm going to just kind of lightly sketch in where the eyes would go to the nose and the mouth. It's always a good idea to have a plan. Let's do something with spikes on this one and maybe some kind of a head piece on the side like that. And then these pieces out here, we're actually going to cut out from some cardboard just like we did on this mask. This was kind of an inspired from an animal. There are some cultures where masks are used to represent different animals like the Northwest Coast Indians. They believe that people can be transformed into animals and so they'll make a mask of animal. And sometimes, they'll have movable parts that come aside and then there's a person there. This inspiration came from an animal. This one is going to be a little bit different. I'm not quite sure it could be honoring an ancestor that's passed on. It could be part of a story. Sometimes masks are used to tell stories, so the children can learn about the culture. Now, I think because I've got these spikes here, maybe I want to repeat that kind of design. I don't like that and let's do something around the eyes. Okay now, you have to be careful with two pointy of things in your design because you have to fit the beans on there but I think you just have to realize what your materials are but these would line up pretty nicely and you could just do this in rose. So here's my plan and what I'm going to do now is transfer this onto the actual mask okay. And of course, if you change your mind while you're working, feel free to make changes from you're sketch. Because after all, you're the artist and you can make changes anytime

People have been making mask since the beginning of time. Masks can be used for all kinds ofpurposes. In areas in Africa, they're used during initiation ceremonies. That's when young boys andyoung girls becomes old enough to become a part of the actual tribe. Masks are also used births andtheir used to death. Masks have been used for all kinds of things throughout history. Every culturehas its own way of creating masks and what we're going to do is we're going to look at some Africanmasks.

Actually, the inspiration for this mask made out of beans actually came from the masks of Africa. Ithink it was the used of the earth colors that really inspired me to choose beans since they've comefrom the earth and the colors are very earthy just by the nature of the beans. So, what you're goingto need for this project is just too simple paper pulp form and this can be purchased in most artsstores and really inexpensive. And you might want to buy more than one because I think once youget started. You're really going to enjoy making masks on these forms.

What I'm going to do first, is just trace around this mask form so that I can do a little planning aheadof time, and I'm going to just kind of lightly sketch in where the eyes would go to the nose and themouth. It's always a good idea to have a plan. Let's do something with spikes on this one and maybesome kind of a head piece on the side like that. And then these pieces out here, we're actually goingto cut out from some cardboard just like we did on this mask. This was kind of an inspired from ananimal. There are some cultures where masks are used to represent different animals like theNorthwest Coast Indians. They believe that people can be transformed into animals and so they'llmake a mask of animal. And sometimes, they'll have movable parts that come aside and then there'sa person there. This inspiration came from an animal.

This one is going to be a little bit different. I'm not quite sure it could be honoring an ancestor that'spassed on. It could be part of a story. Sometimes masks are used to tell stories, so the children canlearn about the culture. Now, I think because I've got these spikes here, maybe I want to repeat thatkind of design. I don't like that and let's do something around the eyes. Okay now, you have to becareful with two pointy of things in your design because you have to fit the beans on there but Ithink you just have to realize what your materials are but these would line up pretty nicely and youcould just do this in rose. you want.

These are really easy to drown. They're just made out of paper so they actually erase and you haveto kind of watch when you're trying to make something symmetrical. You need to be aware ofmeasurements and make certain that. You actually are making them symmetrical. I think I'm goingto stop there, right there and we'll make something come up this way.

Okay, we've got this drawn on here. And the next thing is I'm just going to cut some pieces fromcardboard. I've got a couple of spikes here so that should be pretty easy to cut. Okay and you wantto make them just the tab longer than what you intend to actually made them because they'll be hotglue on to the edge here mask like this, and just cut another one. And we're going to go ahead andI'll actually glue this on. Okay, we'll put this one on there. There, we've got our little additions there.
