How to Make a Simple Solar Oven • Solar ovens are extremely efficient, ecologically

friendly cooking devices that use natural energy from the sun, which is 100% free. Cooking time with solar ovens will take quite longer than cooking with your conventional oven, but it is definitely worth the wait. The food is brewing extremely slowly within a solar cooker, and this will make the food taste more delicious. In addition, foods such as vegetables or meat cooked in solar ovens are very juicy, since they are cooked for long hours on something that resembles “low to medium flame” on your conventional cooker.

Here are a few tips that will help you build your own simple solar oven:

-You will need two large and shallow cardboard boxes, which can be fitted one into the other. Make sure that there is a space of at least 2 inches between the two boxes when fitted as mentioned earlier.

-The two cardboard boxes need to be nested one into the other; then, stuff crumbled newspaper in the free spaces between the boxes. Instead of newspaper, you can also use plant fibers such as straws or dried leaves. Next, you should fit a black metal sheet (or a simple black construction board) right to the bottom of the smaller box, the interior one. This black sheet will act as a magnet for the rays of the sun, so it will attract and retain heat perfectly.

• - Next, you should tape aluminum foil on the “wings” of the outer box. Fold the flaps out and add aluminum foil to each using glue or invisible tape. This will act as the main reflective surface for your cooker. You should glue aluminum foil to the interior walls of the smaller box as well.

• - Right on top of your oven (on top of the outer box actually), you will need to place a glass or a Plexiglas sheet.

- If you do not want to use a glass surface over your cooker, because it might be too heavy or inconvenient to use, you can use plastic wrap instead. This wrap will help retaining the heat within the oven, so you can cook your meals much faster this way.

- You should paint an aluminum pot with black paint on the outside, and add to it a glass lid. This pot will be used in your oven; you just need to place it in the interior of the small box, right over the black metal sheet.

And that's about it! Good luck!
