CARE BEFORE BIRTH• Maternal vaccine against

rubella 6 months before PLANNING PREGNANCY

• Folic acid tab 3 months before PLANNING PREGNANCY

• Complete antenatal care

• Special prenatal tests in special situation (maternal age more than 30, genetic disease)

CARE OF NORMAL NEWBORN AT BIRTH

• Wrap well in winter, keep open when fever

• Feed the baby within 30 min of birth

• Give only mother’s milk (not even water) for 6 months.

• Baby passes more than 8 times urine when milk is adequate

• Baby gains 200gms wt every week

• Sleeps in day, plays and cries in night

CARE UPTO 6 MONTHS

• Frequent feeding• THERE ARE NO ANY DROPS

IN WORLD WICH CAN PROVIDE ENERGY --“TAKAAT”

• Energy comes only from mother’s milk

• Cry is not always a symptom of hunger

• There are no special soaps or creams or massage oils for baby

• Best massage oil is coconut oil

VACCINATION

• Any baby more than 2.0 kg birth wt should be started vaccination from birth.

• Only DPT causes fever for 2 days.

• Ask your doctor regarding never vaccines like Hep b, Hib etc.

• Vaccines either can be given on the same day or can be given 4 wks apart for optimum response

• For 6months - only mother’s milk

• Start semi solids when 7nth month starts

• Best weaning food is what we eat daily

• Thicker the food more the wt gain

• Wt gain is not the only goal of feeding

• It is usual for babies to spit and vomit a little in beginning

• Compare with standard wt chart (not with neighbor!)

• Wt depends on…

• Genetic make up

• emotional make up

• Food habits

FOSTER GOOD FOOD HABITS

• Babies are social-they learn by seeing others. So let the baby eat with family.

• No force feeding. Let the baby eat by himself as soon as possible.

• Encourage routine food and fruits

• Role of special “energy” drinks is limited
