They are a little different from long tail SEO keywords because App Store Optimization (ASO) long-tail keywords are generally shorter. Instead of consisting of three or more individual words, they are made up of two or more keywords. Long tail keywords are highly targeted keywords that contain two or more individual words.
Since long tail keywords are less competitive than single-word keywords, they can be easier to rank for and result in more app downloads. Using this strategy can even help brand new apps get more organic downloads.
This presentation will show you exactly how to find the right long tail keywords for your app on the App Store and Google Play.

How To Prioritize Keyword Selection Criteria
The App Store Optimization Platform
Before you start looking for long tail keywords, remember to prioritize your selection criteria in the following order:
1. App relevance2. Keyword ranking difficulty3. Traffic (Searches)
The keywords you select have to be highly relevant to your app. What would someone search for to find an app like yours? Next, you are looking for keywords that do not have a lot of competition. This will allow you to rank higher for those keywords. Finally, if the first two criteria are equal, choose the keywords with the highest traffic. Also make sure that any keyword you select does not have zero traffic.

How To Measure Ranking Difficulty
The App Store Optimization Platform
We created a Difficulty Score that tells you how hard it will be to rank in the top 10 for a keyword. It is measured on a scale of zero to 10, with 10 being the most difficult keywords to rank for.
If you are just getting started with keyword optimization, then target as low a Difficulty Score as possible. 3.0 or less is a good place to start. It works the same on the App Store and Google Play.
*Note: Our Traffic Score is also measured on a scale of zero to 10, with 10 being keywords that get the most app store searches.

Go Long (Tail)
The App Store Optimization Platform
In the previous example, the keyword “battle” was pretty hard to rank for. So let’s see if adding another word can make it easier. Maybe you have a game that is a “battle royale" type game. If so, then that keyword is much easier to rank for.

Ideal Keywords
The App Store Optimization Platform
Once in awhile, you might stumble onto a long tail keyword like this. It doesn’t happen too often, but when it does, it is gold. With pretty good traffic and a zero Difficulty Score, any apps that target this keyword are sure to show up in the search results.

What To Do Next
The App Store Optimization Platform
Now that you understand how to identify long tail keywords, it is just a matter of sitting down and brainstorming some keyword ideas. Then research each keyword in our Keyword Research module to find out its Difficulty and Traffic Scores. Remember, the same concept works in Google Play and the Apple App Store.
A good way to get started is to write down a very popular single-word keyword in your niche. Then start adding words to that keyword and research those variations.
You might be surprised at what you uncover. Good luck!
