Page 1: How To Effectively Manage New Hires

What Happened?

A new hire was moving boxes of product from the racking/storage area to the staging area for a common carrier delivery. The boxes that were being moved weighed in excess of 50 lbs. The new hire did not know that your organization used handtrucks/dollies for items of that weigh, so he did as he did at his previous employer and picked up and moved the boxes by himself. After several moves the new hire felt sore and reported the event to his Supervisor. The employer sent the new hire to their MPN, where the doctor placed him on disability with a a heniarted disk.

Could This Happen to You?

A new hire can bring a lot to your organization. If they come from similar industry or competitor they can bring the beliefs and actions associated with their previous work-good and/or bad. It is important to train and coach the new hire on a continuous basis with your best practices, so they understand and assimilate to your organization’s culture.

Things to Consider

• When coaching a new hire demonstrate the way your orgazination completes a task/action. Ask if it contradicts things they have done in the past and explain why your organization does things the way they do.

• After completing training/coaching ask the employee if they know of any improvements that can be made on the processes to develop a more efficient or safe action. This will let them know that their input is valuable and you may uncover a better way of completing a task.

• Assign the new hire a mentor in your organziation. Make sure that it is one of your “go-to” people in the organization. They can mentor and advise the new hire and bring him into a “ideal” employee with their help.

• Ask the new hire to lead a coaching session. This will

allow them to demonstrate their knowledge and display a learn-by-doing activity. It will also create more comradarie with other employees.

• Don’t just coach your new hire once. Ensure that

coaching is done on a continuous basis, so that they do their best work in-line with your company’s policies, procedures and goals.
