Blogging is a convenient, fast and low cost platform to broadcastyour business message to the world wide web but you must getthings right otherwise people will simply glance over yourmessage without actually reading what you’ve said.

It is important that you plan each and every aspect of yourbusiness blog including the multiple parts of the design, thefunctionality, the overall feel as well as the content that youpublish to it. All of these parts must all come together to makeyour blog an effective marketing machine for your business.

There are many courses that cover blog design and it’s simplyimpossible to cover all design aspects here in this one article butlet’s discuss some simple basics so that you can avoid making common mistakes.

Often, with a blog, less is more when it comes to design. You need to avoid overcrowding the look ofyour blog to avoid distracting the reader which is especially important with first time visitors to yourblog. Your blog should look clean, fresh and professional while avoiding that ‘cookie-cutter’ corporatedesign and feel even if your blog is representing a corporation.

There are many ready made WordPress blog templates/themes available online that you can actuallypreview on your own blog so you can see how it will look before you commit to purchasing it. Makegood use of this feature as it will save you a lot of money and wasted time.

A popular look is one that uses a white background, black text and a regular font. You can usually ad aheader image of your choice and because the theme uses plain basics colours it allows you manyoptions when it comes to what colour header image you prefer. Blog owners often forgo the option ofusing an image for the header and instead use text.

Images

The use of images should always be considered for every blog post that you publish and it’s highlyrecommended to use at least one image for each post although you can use two or three dependingupon the length of the post and the relation of each image to the article.

There may be some posts where you’re referencing data in chart formats so you’ll use more imagesthan usual but in that context it’s fine to use as many images as needed, otherwise it’s best to usebetween one and three.

The first image that you use in the blog post should be related to the overall subject of your post andplaced at the top of the text and positioned to the left. People should be able to associate the title ofyour blog post to the that image. It’s recommended that each additional image that you use throughoutthe post should relate to the paragraph or section of the post where you’re placing it.

It’s also advisable to resize the images so they don’t take up more room than is needed or detract fromthe text content unless the image is a graphic representation of the text in the post such as a data chart

or graph.

Headings and Sub-Headings

To make the post more engaging for the reader you should always use Headings and Sub-Headingsthroughout the post. In this post I have used headings at the size of “H1″, “H2″ and “H3″ which arestandard sizes in WordPress posts. Many themes will automatically make the title of your post H1 sizewhen you publish the article so don’t worry about using that size in the actual body text of the post.

When writing your post the first line of text can use the “H2″ size and keep the amount of text to one ortwo lines as, when published, this will display as a sub-heading and should compliment your posts title. It will also help to draw in the reader to the rest of your post.

Throughout the rest of your post you should break up the different sections of the content with the “H3″option which is what has been done in this post.

Getting The Right Flow

The content of your blog post should flow naturally in the same way that it would if you were verballyexplaining to someone about an event that happened to you. When it comes to written content youneed to layout the stages of the content so that it makes sense to the reader and makes it easier toread and understand.

Before you begin to write your content it’s very useful to plan out exactly what you’re going to write andthe reason why you’re writing it. This gives you a much clearer idea as to the “what” and “why” of yourwriting. You should draft out the content for your post and keep editing it until you’re totally satisfiedwith it.

Many blog owners will draft and redraft a post over a number of days to ensure they produce theabsolute best content possible. However, it’s not always necessary to do this if you’re writing a shortpost or you’re curating a post from other content.

Call To Action

Regardless of what subject your post is about, the lengthof the post of the style of writing, you should always havesome form of call to action at the end of every blog postthat you publish. There are a number of options availablethat you can use but always use one.

A good call to action should leave the reader with nomore than one choice because as this point you wantthe reader to do one thing and not have them thinkingabout different options to take.

You could drive them to your contact page or place yourcontact details at the end of the post. This would usuallybe the case if your post was a type of press release so the reader can quickly get in touch with you forfurther comment or more information.

If your content was related to one of your products or services then you could direct them to a page on

your website that has more information with a call to action telling them that more information can befound at that page.

Another clear call to action would be asking them to share your blog post via their social accounts suchas Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook etc. When using this option you should have no shame in directly askingthem to share your blog post with their contacts but this option works better with certain types ofcontent.

If your content is helpful, interesting or causes people to debate a subject then directly asking them toshare the post will get a better response than if it’s simply a promotional piece about your company, product or service.

Taking Your Time

There is no set time limit on how quickly you should create a post for your blog so don’t rush things ortry to force it. If writers block seems to be holding you back then put that particular topic to one side foranother day and focus on curating some content which is a quick and easy way to keep your blogupdated on a regular basis.

Curating content can be done by simply taking snippets from different news outlets on the samesubject and adding them to a post on your own blog along with your own opinion on the subject. Thesetypes of posts are very easy to create but it’s important that you always credit each source that you’veused with a link to the location of the original content.
