4.1.4 Using PowerPoint templates

A CD is provided with this manual that offers three templates for the creation of a PowerPoint presentation. More than one PowerPoint presentation can be shown during a church service.

Template 1: Template 1 is an example of a presentation for smaller churches, where the minister creates the PowerPoint presentation. It contains all the announcements and slides for core ideas, Bible verses and the summary of the service.

Templates 2-5: Templates 2-5 are examples of PowerPoint presentations for services that are usually created by the minister and information regarding the service, like the core ideas of the sermon, Bible verses, summary, etc.

Template 6: Template 6 is an example of a PowerPoint presentation for a service created by a member of the church and contains announcements regarding the service. In larger churches the announcements are usually done by a member.

4.1.3 The benefit of PowerPoint

4.6 Waarom behoort u gemeente PowerPoint te gebruik?

PowerPoint can be a valuable tool to communicate different messages to different people or groups in the church. The minister could use it during the service to strengthen the message; emphasise important information, like Bible passages or themes in the sermon; display the hymns that will be sung during the service; and also set out the main points of the service. PowerPoint can be used for announcements prior to the service, like birthdays, anniversaries, church or community events, meetings, etc.

The above clearly shows the strategic use of PowerPoint to capture members’ attention during services and convey information to them before or after the service.

PowerPoint can also be a way to introduce the church at events, conferences or even fundraisers or be a valuable aid during functions or meetings in which the church must offer presentations.

PRESENTATIONPowerPoint is a powerful communiimage when badly done. This section explains how to create a good PowerPoint presentation, by providing suggestions and pointing out possible mistakes

Many presenters cram every possible bit of information on every slide, out of pure laziness to memorise all the information. Reciting the information on slides will bore the audience to tears or even it can be read from the slides? More text also means smaller reading and the message is lost amid unnecessary text. It is, therefore, important to not insert big blocks of text into the presentation.

Rather emphasise the most important pointslides. Don’t use more than six words, unless it is a complex slide.

If possible, make the font at least 28 or more and use the same font throughout

Slide 1 Slide 1 is a typical example of information overload font is also too small. It will bore the audience and make them lose interest.

4.2.2Koeëlpunte

Too many bullet points may distract from the message and lessen its impact, so only mark the most important points. Be consistent in choice of bullet, don’t use different types, choose one and stick to it. If at all possible, don’t use any bullets, but place every sentence or idea on

The colour scheme of a slideshow can either give it an air of professionalism or amateurishness. The colours must suit the identity of the church.

Contrasting background colours may make it difficult to concentrate on the information. Avoid bright gaudy colours as well as colour-blind combinations, like red and green or blue and yellow. Dark text on a light background is best.

most riders

Slide 1 Slide 2 The colour scheme on this slide is awful. The text is messy and disappears into the background. The colour combination doesn’t work either. Neon colours must be avoided at all times.

The dark background with white text of slide 2 presents much better and the colours complement each other.

4.2.5 Using animation

Animation means adding effects to a slide, like words that “appear” or “fly” one at a time onto the page. This may be a quite fun feature of PowerPoint, but too much thereof will irritate the audience and make them lose interest in the presentation and ultimately the message. Successful slide animation must be rehearsed and tested. Keep the following in regard to animation in mind:

- Keep slides simply! - Apply one type of animation style and slide change to all slides. - Don’t change in style – a single style makes a presentation cohesive. - “Busy” presentations distract the audience’s attention away from the content.

4.2.4 Colour

4.7.6 Wit

A slideshow devoid of white space will focus the audience’s attention more on the slide than on the message. White space is when space is left open on a slide, not overloaded with text and images, to allow the audience’s eyes to rest.

Slide 1 Slide 2The information on slide 1 is overwhelming and may lose the audience’s attention, given the lack of white space.

This slide does have its fair share of photos and information, but there is still enough white space for the eyes to rest. The term white space refers to open space, which in this case is black.

4.2.8 Graphics A slideshow should have some graphics. There is nothing more boring than an all-text slideshow, but choose the graphics carefully. Graphics and photos must be purposeful and achieve a certain goal. High-quality images, rather than quirky illustrations, will make the presentation stand out. Keep the following in mind in regard to images:

- Include images, but don’t let them overshadow the presentation. - Keep slides simple! Overcrowding takes attention from the content. - Too many photos makes a presentation difficult to save, 1 or 2 photos per slide is

about enough. - As previously mentioned, rather use high-quality photos than illustrations.

Slide 1 Slide 2The images and illustrations on this slide are overwhelming and may distract the audience’s attention away from the message. Too many images and illustrations make the presentation seem unprofessional.

Slide 2 has a single graphic and looks much more professional. The rectangular block and clear text creates an air of professionalism and class .
