When writing an essay in history, one of the most important technical aspects of your work is making sure that you give proper credit to the work of those authors that you use. While you are using their work in your own way, it is important to acknowledge where you have taken ideas, statistics, words and information from.
WHAT IS PLAGARISM?

In order to avoid plagiarism, today we are going to look at how to properly cite your history essays. It is important to learn how to properly cite materials; otherwise you will have engaged in plagiarism – which can often result in a zero for the assignment, and in some extreme cases, a zero for your course, especially when you enter post-secondary education.

How to Cite
For any assignments in this class, we will be using MLA Formatting – this is the style used by the Modern
Languages Associations, hence MLA. It is a very common style of
citation that is easy to use and gives the reader easy access to
your sources.

For MLA citation, there are two requirements – in-text citations that lets the reader know immediately from where you have taken the information, and a Bibliography, where you have more detailed information about your source.

While many of you may be familiar with such websites as www.citationmachine.net, it is important to know
how to properly cite materials on your own. These websites can often distort formatting, and if you give the incorrect information or put it into the wrong box, it will
make the citation incorrect.

What we are going to do today is to take a look at some of the most common sources that you will use in your research, and then we will learn how to make proper citations from these sources. After we have taken a look at that, we will then break off into groups to complete our activity included in this handout.

The most commonly used sources at this level would be books,
magazine articles, academic articles (maybe), chapters from
anthologies, newspaper articles, encyclopaedic entries, and
websites.
