How to D.I.Y.Build a Brick BBQ

There is nothing like outsideentertaining with friendsand family at home. A brickBBQ can provide hours ofentertainment.

the side creating a clean edge. Follow this format to complete the firstcourse - constantly checking with the spirit level and stringlines. Notethe joining end of the middle line will need a half brick. Before youstart the second layer, it is important to that you stagger each level- each course must maintain a 1/2 brick overlap to bond your projecttogether. What this means is that you will have to cut bricks to achievea staggering effect. No two joining levels will have the same design.See Fig 2 for brick layout. Now you have your two staggered designssimply repeat.

    Cutting bricks

Lay your brick on the ground and mark a cutting line around brick withyour bolster and mash hammer. Now place your bolster in groove andfirmly hit. You may also like to use an angle grinder with a masonry bit.

    Supports

The drip tray and hot plate will need supports. You can change thebrick design in course 6 and 9 to use bricks as supports. To do thissimply lay the selected bricks so that only half of the brick is bedded inmortar and the remaining half is protruding inwards to support the ashtray (course 6) and hot plate (course 9). You may also choose to bolt onsteel supports after you have completed laying the bricks. To finish offthe final course (10), apply mortar and round off the edges with yourtrowel. You may also like to insert a wooden table next to the hot plate,as a preparation area.

    D.I.Y.Hints and Tips

    1. You may choose to use a gas barbeque rather than a dr ip tray andhot plate. If so you will need to measure the barbeque and adjustthe brick design.

    2. Create a gauge rod to check the brick height (dont forget to allow10mm for the mortar).

    3. Always check your form work l evels and dimensions.

    4. If your excavation soil is very dry or slightly wet, wait half an hourto prevent the soil extracting moisture from the pour, which willweaken it.

    Choosing a site

When choosing your BBQ site, make sure it is reasonably flat, protected fromthe wind, away from shrubs and bushes and not too far from your kitchen. If you have an entertainment area around a pool or near your decking, thiswould be a great site.

    Preparing your site

Using four corner pegs and a stringline, mark out an area of 1400 x900mm.Check that opposite sides are equal in length and use some string to check thatthe diagonal distances match.

    Excavate & lay cement

Excavate to 100mm with a shovel then box in the pegged area with edgingboards and pegs, making sure all board edges are level. Insert the steelmesh to reinforce the slab and prevent damage from tree roots. Follow thedirections on the cement bag, and then pour cement making sure that thereinforced mesh is completely covered. Level the slab with a straight pieceof timber, cover with a hessian bag or plastic sheet and allow it to cure for aweek - then remove your edging.

    Preparing for laying

Layout the complete first course of your BBQ, making sure to allow 10mmfor mortar between bricks. Test that each corner is square with your builderssquare, then mark with a stringline and pegs so that you have a guide to start.

    Mixing mortar

Following the instructions on the pre-mixed mortar bag, mix the mor tar ona mortar board or in a wheelbarrow so that it sticks to the trowel when heldvertically.

    Start laying

Starting in the top left corner, layout 10mmthick of mortar for each brick (start with4) then run the point of the trowel throughthe mortar to spread it slightly to sides(furrowing). Lay the first brick at the frontcorner, align it with the stringline and tapwith trowel to bed it into the mortar (Fig 1).Holding the next brick in one hand, apply10mm on the bricks vertical joint, this isknow as buttering. Now push this butteredbrick against the first brick to form a verticaljoin, and then bed this brick by tappingdown with trowel. Mortar will leak out theside, so simply scrape your trowel along
