INTRODUCTION And today as It was announced, we are going to

speak about “HOW TO BECOME UNCOMMON AND SUCCESSFUL SCHOLAR? ”

before starting our session, there are some specific terms that are sometimes will be employed, and they are essential to know in the initial stage of learning about uncommon and successful scholar, I will just mention them and followed by a brief definition of these terms.

1. Uncommon-not ordinary/not common2. Successful-being developed3. Scholar- means intellectual/ researcher/

academic.4. Uncommon scholar-5. Successful scholar-

IMPORTANCES OF BECOMING UNCOMMON AND SUCCESSFUL SCHOLAR

THINGS TO BE DONE TO BECOMEUNCOMMON AND SUCCESSFUL SCHOLAR1. LEARN TO SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM THE CROWD “your

parents, friends, teachers, etc” The thing that most of people have failed to do. You are about

to study or go for night studies and your friends come with either game/ movie or sometime your friends want to go and watch a football match and because of your fear and meet their expectation/ peer pressure/ pleasing them, you decide to neglect your responsibility and go after them.

To follow and do exactly what the crowd expects is so easy but all the great scholars learnt to separate themselves from the crowd.

Warren Rick once said “Unfortunately, those who follow the crowd usually get lost in it “dead end”. And I may not know all the keys to success but one key to failure is to try to please everyone”;Jesus also said “no one can serve two masters”

Page 10: How to become uncommon and successful student

1. LEARN TO SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM THE CROWD It doesn’t mean to distance yourself from the people.

It means you are with the crowd but you are not off the crowd. In other words every great uncommon and successful scholar will at a point in his/her life stand out from the general practices around him/her. You can’t educate people on how to dive at the same time you don’t know how to dive.

If they are going in this way, you go in another way but with an informed perspective, and right direction.

Example Jesus “Luke 2:43”, Malcolm X, and Nelson Mandela, and Thomas A. Edison

separate yourself for:- finding solutions for the problems the crowd

faces. to bring changes to the society you live in.

Page 11: How to become uncommon and successful student

2.ABILITY TO LISTEN AND ASK QUESTIONS So as to examine closely the opinions, arguments , and views

presented by other people. By stellar Cottrell So as to seek for information. So as not to speak what we see but have the confirmation or validity/

truth of it. e.g. when I went to John I saw him mopping blood that was all over his living room…what if they were tomatoes and not blood.

Questions will help you think about the implications of what you’ve read <heard or seen> and how it applies to you personally by Warren Rick.

For example Jesus “Luke 2:46”.God listened patiently to David’s accusations of unfairness, betrayal, and abandonment; God also allowed Abraham to question and challenge him over the destruction of the city of Sodom, who am I not to develop this ability?

Every successful and uncommon scholar has an acquired mind. And if that is not enough every scholar who is successful and uncommon is listener and questioner.

Some scholars speak or talk much, believe in everything they say to be right even if it is wrong.

Page 12: How to become uncommon and successful student

2.ABILITY TO LISTEN AND ASK QUESTIONS NB you don’t gain much by talking but you gain much by listening

especially to the people who know more than us and ask them questions to matter of great importance or concern.

Even if you think you know much, ask…..you may get the second opinion, hear something that will shape your understanding even better.

Listen things that will confirm what you know b’se your views may not be the only views available. There could be other sides that you don’t know.

You’ve to come to a certain point where you should know people using different ways….for example thro’ conversation, questioning and listening and discover new aspects/ideas hidden, perhaps for decades.

NB Reading is a part of listening. Listening doesn’t mean you know nothing, listen what they know and if

they don’t know what you know it is advantage to you. The Late Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) said when he spoke with former

president of Ireland, HE. Mary Robinson“ don’t go and meet people with your ideas, just go and listen their ideas”

Page 13: How to become uncommon and successful student

3. KNOWING WHAT IS IMPORTANT At this level or point in time, of your life; there are a

lot of things that captivate or catch your mind. And it is in human nature to get distracted by minor issues by Warren Rick.

You may be interested to go club and do a lot of things that to which you consider them to be important in your life or environment you live in.

The Bible says “don’t live carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the master wants”. LUKE 2:49.

You may desire to have a lot of information, to cope up with the teachers or lecturers. You go to library daily, surfing in the nets, learning from what others, and you consider all of these to be important and you need them to survive at college.

Page 14: How to become uncommon and successful student

3.KNOWING WHAT IS IMPORTANT And all of this, it is actually a good thing to

do, and a lot of us have done a pretty job with that.

Wonderful enough, the things that you consider to be important have led to your failures.

Haven’t you written well in your assignment or answer shits during examinations, and believing that for this you are going to score A or B+, or passing with flying colors but the results come out differently.

Page 15: How to become uncommon and successful student

3.KNOWING WHAT IS IMPORTANT But the materials you read and searched you believed they were good or

important and can give you a critically analytical writing.

Do you know what has been causing that? perhaps you have been saying that teacher is very unkind. He / she does not like you etc You fail to know what is important, and some of us here have crammed more

activities into an overloaded schedule and forgets focusing on what matters the most and that is required…or important one. The women and men who have made the great difference in History were the most focused e.g. apostle Paul almost single-handedly spread Christianity throughout Roman Empire; he said “I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and look forward to what lies ahead/ let us keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us”.

NB

An author of a book called CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS, Stella Cottrell.

She once said in her book:-

“Academic study requires increasingly sophisticated levels of critical analysis at every level of study”

Page 16: How to become uncommon and successful student

3.KNOWING WHAT IS IMPORTANT and do you know those sophisticated

levels of critical analysis at every level of study?

Ability to break down data after you’ve collected them and then rearrange to get an information that is a cream or most needed one or important towards whatever task you are required to do.

And this does not come so easily, it takes time, efforts, energy, ability to listen, reason and ask question and so on.

Page 17: How to become uncommon and successful student

3.KNOWING WHAT IS IMPORTANT You have been failing, not because a

lecturer hates you or doesn’t like you, but is because you have failed to know the levels and types of important information, you need on the task.

If you want to become uncommon and successful scholar, know what is important like Jesus “Luke 2:49” and the late Mwl. J. K. Nyerere “ for Tanzania to succeed, win against poverty, ignorance and diseases”

Page 18: How to become uncommon and successful student

3.KNOWING WHAT IS IMPORTANTThings to be done to know what is important :-1) Identifying correctly the information, you need depend on

the task.2) Selecting effectively the type of information for the purpose.3) Knowing certainly your priorities and purpose as it’ll

concentrate your effort and energy on what is important. You become effective by being selective.

4) Arranging your priorities from highly preferred one to lowly preferred one.

5) Making effective decision(s).6) Learning to live by your decision(s). 7) Time, situation, functionality, impression."Be brief on the logic and reason portion of your

presentation. There are probably about a thousand facts about an automobile, but you don't need them all to make a decision. About a half dozen will do." -- Jim Rohn

Page 19: How to become uncommon and successful student

4.HAVING PASSION FOR YOUR STUDIES/ THINGS YOU DO/MISSION

Like Jesus “Luke 2:46”, Thomas A. Edison, Mandela, Late Nyerere, Isaac Newton and Martin Luther King Jr. who said “if man has not discovered that he will die for, he is not fit to live” likely to sound like this if you change words

“If a man has not discovered passion for his study, he is not fit to live for it”

Harriet Tubman “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember you have within your strength, the patience and the PASSION to reach for the stars to change the world”

Page 20: How to become uncommon and successful student

4.HAVING PASSION FOR YOUR STUDIES/ THINGS YOU DO/MISSION

If you want to become uncommon and successful intellectual, have passion and commitment for your studies…if it is economics, accounting geography, DS, PSPA, MGT SCIENCE, PPM $ CD, and so on have passion for it.

NB Don’t lead yourself by traditions taught by men

but by those given to you by God. Because every great scholar had or has passion

for what he/she does, and dedicated/dedicates him/herself to bring changes to the world; hence you can’t meet uncommon and successful scholar who didn’t have passion for his or her study.

Page 21: How to become uncommon and successful student

4.HAVING PASSION FOR YOUR STUDIES/ THINGS YOU DO/MISSION

If you rather buy books than food and clothes or if you rather study than entertaining yourself. If you want to become bookish or opposite; but all of this depend on where your passion lies.

Some people fall a sleep when they’ve book(s) in front of them and some even sleep when they are reading a bible.

Learning should be such that what is attentively heard is perceived as a valuable gift and not as a hard duty

Page 22: How to become uncommon and successful student

4.HAVING PASSION FOR YOUR STUDIES/ THINGS YOU DO/MISSION

NB Never regard your study as a duty but

as the enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the community to which your later work belongs by Albert Einstein

Page 23: How to become uncommon and successful student

4.HAVING PASSION FOR YOUR STUDIES/ THINGS YOU DO/MISSION

Some feel boring when they are in the

discussion and yet expect to do well in their study. Some their passion is somewhere else but since they did not know what is important, they had a wrong choice for their study. I am very sorry to say this, you find out a person loves accounting but he or she takes economics or loves economics but he or she takes project planning. Learn to have passion for your study.

Page 24: How to become uncommon and successful student

4.HAVING PASSION FOR YOUR STUDIES/ THINGS YOU DO/MISSION

The things to do to grow your passion for your study:-

1) Like to learn more from your study. Go to your lecturers for help if there are

concepts you don’t understand well or having doubts.

Have frequent discussion(s) with your fellows. Visit different sources of information, to improve

your awareness about the study itself. Be able to take courage and experience from

the ones who studied it.2) Make your study an activity rather than reading

or studying it only.

Page 25: How to become uncommon and successful student

4.HAVING PASSION FOR YOUR STUDIES/ THINGS YOU DO/MISSION

3) Learn to use your study in various aspects of your life to see if it matches and how it will help you to solve the problem or troubling circumstances that all around you.

4) Have inner peace through overcoming the fear that is in you “My God, have I made the right decision, look my uncle took the same study but he has not succeed”.

5) Have a good opinion about your self and the study, you are pursuing.

Page 26: How to become uncommon and successful student

4.HAVING PASSION FOR YOUR STUDIES/ THINGS YOU DO/MISSION

6) Build consistent character for your study.

7) Master and replicate the processes of your study to meet your goals. “learn to manifest yourself and do your practice of your study over and over and over and over and over”.

8) Personalize it.9) Knowing your Purpose because it will

help you producing your passion.

Page 27: How to become uncommon and successful student

5. ABILITY TO SEE WHAT OTHERS DO NOT SEE. “VISION/PERSPECTIVE” Thomas A. Edison saw the light from the bulb

before he invented the light bulb. Julius Kambarage Nyerere saw independence

in Tanganyika and some of African Nations possible from the whites before his fellow Africans who saw it impossible.

Martin Luther King Jr. saw America “USA” ruled by African-American president before others saw it, in 2008 when Obama was elected.

Jesus “Luke 2:47-48” he saw his mission ahead of him differently from what others saw.

David and Goliath “David saw Goliath a big target while others saw him as a problem”

Page 28: How to become uncommon and successful student

5. ABILITY TO SEE WHAT OTHERS DO NOT SEE. If you want or going to be uncommon and

successful scholar, you will have to change totally your perspective; perspective is very important because where you stand, will determine what you see and who you will become.

Right now, I can see what is behind you, but I can’t see what is behind me.

before I go deep or a little further, I want to tell you a short and true story of a person I know and some of us here, we know him; his name is Edgar Ngango “a former assistant chairperson-Chama Cha Bikira Maria”

Page 29: How to become uncommon and successful student

5. ABILITY TO SEE WHAT OTHERS DO NOT SEE. When he was a boy, his father told him

to close his eyes. He closed his eyes but not so tight and all he saw was the DARKNESS and told his father.

For the second time, his father asked him to close his eyes, but this time he was able to see some LIGHT, and he again told his father.

For the third time, his father told him to close his eyes and this time, he tightly closed his eyes, and started to see some STARS.

Page 30: How to become uncommon and successful student

5. ABILITY TO SEE WHAT OTHERS DO NOT SEE. Is there any one in this room can tell me

and the others, the meaning of this story and about the DARKNESS, LIGHT and without forgetting STARS?.

When you grow in your understanding, you used to see something difficult 5+5, but when you reached standard two 5+5 became easy to you and now you started to worry about other things.

Page 31: How to become uncommon and successful student

5. ABILITY TO SEE WHAT OTHERS DO NOT SEE. What I am trying to say is that when you grow in your

understanding, something which looks very, very big today, later on will become so small or

The things we looked or saw impossible or big, a year or days ago, begins to look possible or small.

Things to do:-1) Change your perspective and this you don’t do by

staying stagnant or doing nothing.2) Luke 2:52 i.e. to grow mentally, physically, and

spiritually. Or Ecclesiastes 2:26 3) And this doesn’t come so easy, ask yourself, what kind

of scholar do you want to become.4) What comes later, the things you want to achieve,

imagine them.5) Picture kind of life you desire, being supportive or a

burden to the people that surround you.

Page 32: How to become uncommon and successful student

6. A SENSE OF TIMING It is a very important aspect one should have,

before becoming uncommon and successful scholar; a sense of timing….ecclesia 3:1- 8 [7] “a time to keep silence, and a time to talk’’

In life not every thing is done out of time, I mean 24 hours in a day but the question is do I do every thing in a right or wrong time? And how do I cope with the opportunity of life that time gives?

There were and still are scholars who knew and know exactly how to use and cope with time. Examples Nelson Mandela, Julius Nyerere, and above of all these people there is Jesus and Hannah waited for God’s perfect timing without knowing when.Esther4:14

Page 33: How to become uncommon and successful student

6. A SENSE OF TIMING These people knew how to handle and cope with time,

they knew when to be submissive and when to be manifested.

If you observe correctly Jesus, he had a sense of timing; he discovered his mission at the age of 12 years and waited for 18 years before he started his mission.

The fact that he knew his mission and him self well, it didn’t mean, he was supposed to start his mission at 12 years. He waited for the right time. Learning from other people, life itself and waiting for his time that God wanted him to do his mission.

if it could be for someone else could observe the nearest benefits and forget the farthest losses in life and started the mission.

Page 34: How to become uncommon and successful student

6. A SENSE OF TIMING Someone else could have thought that three years

was very short period of time and they needed more time for the mission, that someone could have started a mission a long, long time before reaching age 30 as Jesus did.

Sometime, some of people think that the time left for them is too short, and want to do every thing within a very short period of time with short-sighted mind, but they forget one thing, eternal legacy to live behind and being obsessed with earthly legacy.

Jesus spent his last three years on planet earth well accomplishing his mission and left a very good eternal legacy that lives and always will live.

Page 35: How to become uncommon and successful student

6. A SENSE OF TIMING things to do to have a sense of timing

1) Identify your self, either by inborn instinct that longs for immortality by Warren Rick “NATURE – refers to what we are” or “KNOWLEDGE- refers who we are’’ and this is through a relationship with Jesus Christ. The Bible says “It is in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are, living for long before……”[Ephesians 1:11] and also the bible says “and he determined the times set for them” and Romans 12:3 the only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us.

2) Identify things you can do and can’t do at the time you are in. even if you come to realize that there are many things that you can’t do, don’t get discouraged, because in life, God can help us do anything and everything that he has called me or you to do.

3) After knowing the things you can do, is it a right time to do things you can do.

4) If not, can you be submissive till a time to be manifested. Mathew3:15

Page 36: How to become uncommon and successful student

6. A SENSE OF TIMING5) Or if it is time to be manifested, what are you going to do, how

“SHARE IT WITH OTHERS/ DO IT ALL BY YOURSELF, JOHN 3:28-29” and also the Bible says “God has given gifts to each of you from his great variety of spiritual gifts .manage them well so that God’s generosity can flow through you….are you called to help others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then God will be given glory.” and why are you going to do.

6) Have plans the God says “I know what I am planning for you…I have good plans for you not plans to hurt you, I’ll give you hope and a good future and accurate data for your quest base on the time you are in and time to come.

7) Learn to use wisely and being ready for the opportunities of your time.

8) Discover God’s purpose in your life, because it will help you to allocate your time and use your resources and surrender [that goes with trust to God] your life to God. The Bible says “surrender your self to the Lord and wait patiently for him”.

Page 37: How to become uncommon and successful student

6. A SENSE OF TIMING

How many of us do have friends, we started school together, but as the time we are studying they are making money right now. And how does it feel? It pains a lot right.

And some have quitted going to school and went to work, have they succeeded to a level they desired? Yes, Oprah and Gate. Are they like you? Did they have the things, I mentioned a while ago.

“It is never too late to be what you might have been by George Eliot”

The fact you are an intellectual, does not mean you can do everything at this moment. Just get up or stand up from your chair and do every thing magnificently and without a mistake. You just have enough time to do God’s will

Page 38: How to become uncommon and successful student

6. A SENSE OF TIMING Don’t think simply because, God’s grace is upon you,

you can do everything brilliantly, because in life there are some things you can’t do. You can do absolutely everything that God has called you to do when it is the right time but not every thing that some one else does; that is why John Baptist prepared a way for Jesus and later on after 40 days since his resurrection Jesus gave us Holy Spirit. Jesus knew exactly when will be the time for Holy Spirit to come and stay with us, why didn’t Holy Spirit came after Jesus died? Or did you ever think why David defeated Goliath after 40 days of Goliath’s challenge.

1 PETER 5:5 – “6” – “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may EXALT you in due TIME”.

Page 39: How to become uncommon and successful student

6. A SENSE OF TIMING You may be given an office today to

work or a department to work under your supervision and do things that even a child can not do.

Some of what we call intellectuals have failed to do certain things in life, not because they are inefficient or incapable, failed to have a sense of timing and ability to face exposure of the time gives. It becomes so heavy or a burden for them to handle.

Page 40: How to become uncommon and successful student

SOME PEOPLE WHO HAVE APPLIED THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO DEVELOP THE WORLD1. Eleanor of Aquitaine 1122-1204 - she is credited for

having transformed Aquitaine into one of the largest intellectual and cultural centers in Medieval Western Europe.

2. Maria Theresa of Austria (1717-1780) –she was also a participant in the Enlightenment. She strongly promoted education and liberal politics. She founded Imperial and Royal Academy of Science and Literature in Brussels and she supported medical research by demanding that the University of Vienna be given money to make the medical faculty more efficient.
