How to Add Social Media Links to Your WordPress Website
Promoting your website on social media sites is a powerful way to build a relationship
with your potential customers and get your name out there.
If you want to include Facebook and Twitter links on your site, you'll need to create
accounts with each of those sites. Keep in mind that you'll need to create profiles for
your website/business, not a personal profile. For example, if you already have a
personal Facebook profile, you'll need to create a separate page for your
website/business. If you already have a personal Twitter account, you'll need to create
another one for your website.
You can create a Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/pages/create.php
You can create a Twitter account at: http://twitter.com/
You do not need to set up a Google Plus account to add that link to your website. If you
want to create a Google account, however, you can do so at: https://plus.google.com
Once you have your profiles set up, you can add links to them on your website. To do
this, you'll begin by logging into the WordPress backend of your website. Remember,
you can get to your WordPress backend by adding /wp-admin to the end of your URL.
For example, if your URL is www.mysite.com, you would get to your WordPress
backend by going to www.mysite.com/wp-admin.
When you log in you'll see a screen similar to the one below:
2
Scroll down until you see a section called Social Media Links, and a section called
Social Sharing & Bookmarking.
In the section called Social Media Links, you can enter your Facebook and Twitter
URLs. These are the URLs of your actual Facebook and Twitter profiles. Just visit your
Facebook and Twitter pages, copy the URL, and paste it into the appropriate field.
3
For example, if the Facebook page for your website is www.facebook.com/mysite, that's
what you would paste into the Facebook URL field. Remember these are the URLs of
your website's Facebook and Twitter pages, not your personal pages.
In the section called Social Sharing & Bookmarking, you should enter in your website
URL in the Google Plus URL and Facebook Like URL fields. This is the URL of the
actual website you're working on, not your Google Plus or Facebook page URLs. For
example, if your website is www.mysite.com, that's what you would enter here.
When you've filled in all four fields, click on Save Changes. Your social media links will
now show up on your website!
If a visitor clicks on the Twitter or Facebook icons in the "Connect With Me" box (shown
below), they will be directed to your website's Facebook or Twitter pages.
4
If a visitor clicks on the Facebook Like button or Google Plus button (shown below),
then they'll "like" your Facebook or Google Plus pages.
You can also move these social media icons to different locations on your website if
you'd like. To do this, go back to your WordPress admin area and click on Appearance
and then Widgets in the left-hand menu.
In the Available Widgets section, you'll see a widget called Facebook Like URL, one
called Google Plus URL, and one called Social Media Links Widget.
5
The Facebook Like URL and Google Plus URL widgets control these social media
icons on your website:
6
The Social Media Links Widget controls these social media icons on your website:
To change where these icons appear on your site, all you need to do is click on the
widget for the icon you want to move, and drag that widget over to where you want it to
show up on your website. For example, in the image below, we've clicked on the
Facebook Like URL widget and dragged it over to the Header Right position.
To remove a widget, just click on the widget you want to remove in the right-hand menu
and drag it back to the Available Widgets section. In the example below, we are
removing the Google Plus widget from the Primary Sidebar area.
7
If you see duplicate icons on your website, then it's because the corresponding widget
appears in two places in your WordPress backend on the Widgets page. For example,
in the image below, the Facebook widget is in the Header Right position and the
Primary Sidebar position.
Just go back to your Widgets page and remove the widget that you don't want to show
up on your site.
And that's all there is to adding social media icons to your website!
