Business travelers in the U.S. will take close to 500 million trips in 2016. That means, every day,
nearly 40,000 people are booking ground transportation¹. Meanwhile, a stream of devices
and applications are emerging to help travelers get to their destinations in more efficient,
safe, and affordable ways. This constantly-changing landscape can leave your team lost,
fighting other business travelers for space and trying to keep up with the best apps. And
lost is the last place your team should be, especially when they’re traveling for work.
Lyft has worked with hundreds of teams to integrate more affordable, reliable transportation
into their business travel programs with ridesharing. This guide is designed to give you the
tools you need to fit ridesharing into your travel program including frameworks for how
to assess safety, insurance, and liability. After reading this guide, you’ll be able to answer
some common questions among the business travel community including:
• Why do business travelers choose ridesharing?
• How do ridesharing services keep business travelers safe?
• How can travel managers fit ridesharing into existing travel programs?
Business travelcan be complicated.
We’re here to help your team navigatethe way to better business travel.

Let’s evaluate how ridesharing can workfor your team.
Today’s business travelers overwhelmingly rate the ridesharing experience as more
satisfying than taxis and rental cars². Ridesharing apps fit the lifestyle of business travelers
who need more flexibility, and they often rely on technology to provide it. There are some
big trends that are driving change in the business travel landscape:
Business travelers increasingly choose to participate in the sharing economy instead
of owning. In many cases, the sharing economy provides more affordable options for
transportation and housing than traditional alternatives, and business travelers are
noticing. 46% of business travelers choose services like Lyft and Airbnb over traditional
services³ to cut spending.
Business travelers need more digital, on-demand booking opportunities from travel
suppliers. As more travelers opt for the convenience of travel apps, dependence on online
booking and data will increase. Ridesharing applications enable passengers to book a car
anytime and from anywhere using smartphone GPS.
As more millennials and more women join the workforce, their preferences and lifestyles
are making the travel experience more inclusive. Today, women make up 47 percent of
the workforce, a 27 percent increase from the 1970s⁴. And by 2020, millennials will make
up 50 percent of the workforce⁵. Travel managers today are adapting their travel programs
to accommodate the needs of more diverse business travelers.

How do ridesharing services keep business
travelers safe?

Ridesharing services have introduced a set of digital safety innovations that are designed
to keep travelers safe and provide more ride transparency. Passengers are equipped with
more access to data and opportunities to provide feedback, which means safety can be a
bigger part of the experience.
Here are some highlights from Lyft’s safety program to provide more information about
how digital safety innovations fit into ridesharing:
Driver & Vehicle ChecksLyft requires drivers to pass rigorous background, driving, and vehicle checks.
• Criminal background checks are completed by Sterlingbackcheck, a nationally
accredited federal, state, and county background check provider.
• Annual driving record checks are completed by SambaSafety, a nationally accredited
motor vehicle record and driver information provider.
• 19-point inspection is required for every driver’s vehicle.
• Zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy is enforced for all drivers.
Legal & RegulatoryA new way to ride requires a new set of rules. Lyft works with policymakers across the
country to develop safety-focused ridesharing policies and regulations.

In Case of EmergencyIn the rare event that something goes wrong during a ride, your team’s safety always
comes first.
• Critical Response Line is available 24 hours every day.
• Ride history logs the driver and route details for every ride.
• $1M auto liability insurance policy offers greater coverage than traditional ride services
when drivers pick up passengers.
Digital ProtectionOur digital safety innovations go beyond traditional safety standards to provide more
protection for your team through the Lyft app.
• Two-way ratings are actively monitored and enable our Trust & Safety Team to respond
if a Lyft driver isn’t meeting our safety standards. Passengers will never have a driver
more than once who they rate with three stars or fewer, and drivers who don’t maintain
high enough ratings aren’t able to continue driving with Lyft.
• Driver and vehicle information like photos, license plate numbers, and car details help
passengers make sure they’re getting in the right car before they ride.
• GPS ride tracking provides real-time route visibility.
• Route sharing allows passengers to easily share where they are and when they’ll arrive.
• Lost and found reports make it easy for passengers to recover any belongings they
leave behind.
It’s important to know how and when your team is covered when they use a
ridesharing service. Lyft’s auto insurance policy is designed to keep your team
protected when they choose ridesharing. Here’s an overview of Lyft’s policy:
Passenger Protection• $1M auto liability: our policy will apply as primary to the Lyft driver’s
personal automobile insurance policy.
• Uninsured and underinsured motorist protection: if a driver who doesn’t
have adequate insurance causes an accident involving a Lyft car, our policy
covers up to $1,000,000 for bodily injury to the driver and passenger.
Corporate Protection• Insurance specialists: our team of insurance specialists can answer
questions and produce insurance certificates for your team.
• General liability: we procure $1,000,000 each occurrence, $2,000,000
general aggregate in General Liability Coverage.
City Lyft Taxi Black Car
Chicago $1,000,000 $350,000 $350,000
Los Angeles $1,000,000 $300,000 $750,000
Memphis $1,000,000 $60,000 $60,000

How does ridesharinginsurance work?
The ground transportation space is crowded with thousands of disconnected services.
Travelers often ride with multiple ride services on a single business trip. And this fragmentation
can be expensive. Certify reports that companies spend 21% of their travel budgets on
ground transportation, substantially more than they spend for airfare and lodging⁶.
Until now, travel managers haven’t had the ability to consolidate ground transportation
spend through a single, preferred ride service. Adding ridesharing to your business travel
program enables you to give your team a single, reliable partner who will work with you
to improve the way they ride:
• Provide safe rides with increased transparency and digital protection.
• Cut spending with savings of up to 30% compared to other services.
• Gain visibility into traveler spending and behavior with more data.
