How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

1 Corinthians 13:1(NKJV) 1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 4Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;

7bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. 11When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. 13And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

Love is real.

Love lasts.

Love makes a difference in others' lives.

When our actions do not mirror these verses I just read, they are not following the guidelines of love.

Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

Ephesians 5:22-33(NKJV) 22Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.

28So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31“For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

Prepared Love - love is a choice - we prepare to love each other by choosing to do so.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Page 11: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

Pronounced Love - how long has it been since you told your spouse, your brother, sister, mother, father, son or daughter, or just a friend, "I Love You!?"

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Page 12: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

Pure Love - Do you put your spouse before you? Is it a selfish love? Is it a pure love?

Ephesians 3:19(NKJV) 19to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Page 13: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

Practical Love - love grows if we let it. That is why it is love! That is why it is so practical -- IT WORKS!

Ephesians 5:2(NKJV) 2And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

How can we really have a good strong vibrant love if we do not know

the Giver of love itself?

Page 15: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

Purposeful Love - Do you have a purpose for your love? Is it to help your spouse? Would you give your life for him or her?

Philippians 2:1-5(NKJV) 1Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,

Perfect Love - Completeness is the idea. Do you completely love or do you withhold your love or use it as a bargaining chip?

2 Thessalonians 3:5(NKJV) 5Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

Perpetual Love - Love lasts! If we but nurture our love even just a little, it will last, and it will sustain itself! God does not intend that our love either diminish or go away!

Jude 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

The Sullivan Ballou Letter Letter dated July the 14th, 1861 Written From Washington D.C.

My very dear Sarah,

The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days -- perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write you again, I feel impelled to write lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more.

Page 19: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

Our movement may be one of a few days duration and full of pleasure -- and it may be one of severe conflict and death to me. Not my will, but thine 0 God, be done. If it is necessary that I should fall on the battlefield for my country, I am ready. I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in, the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans upon the triumph of the Government, and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and suffering of the Revolution. And I am willing -- perfectly willing -- to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt.

Page 20: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

But, my dear wife, when I know that with my own joys I lay down nearly all of yours, and replace them in this life with cares and sorrows -- when, after having eaten for long years the bitter fruit of orphanage myself, I must offer it as their only sustenance to my dear little children -- is it weak or dishonorable, while the banner of my purpose floats calmly and proudly in the breeze, that my unbounded love for you, my darling wife and children, should struggle in fierce, though useless, contest with my love of country?

Page 21: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

I cannot describe to you my feelings on this calm summer night, when two thousand men are sleeping around me, many of them enjoying the last, perhaps, before that of death -- and I, suspicious that Death is creeping behind me with his fatal dart, am communing with God, my country, and thee.

I have sought most closely and diligently, and often in my breast, for a wrong motive in thus hazarding the happiness of those I loved and I could not find one. A pure love of my country and of the principles have often advocated before the people and "the name of honor that I love more than I fear death" have called upon me, and I have obeyed.

Page 22: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

Sarah, my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me to you with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me irresistibly on with all these chains to the battlefield.

Page 23: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

The memories of the blissful moments I have spent with you come creeping over me, and I feel most gratified to God and to you that I have enjoyed them so long. And hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes of future years, when God willing, we might still have lived and loved together and seen our sons grow up to honorable manhood around us. I have, I know, but few and small claims upon Divine Providence, but something whispers to me -- perhaps it is the wafted prayer of my little Edgar -- that I shall return to my loved ones unharmed. If I do not return, my dear Sarah, never forget how much I love you, and when my last breath escapes me on the battlefield, it will whisper your name.

Page 24: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

Forgive my many faults, and the many pains I have caused you. How thoughtless and foolish I have oftentimes been! How gladly would I wash out with my tears every little spot upon your happiness, and struggle with all the misfortune of this world, to shield you and my children from harm. But I cannot. I must watch you from the spirit land and hover near you, while you buffet the storms with your precious little freight, and wait with sad patience till we meet to part no more.

Page 25: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the garish day and in the darkest night -- amidst your happiest scenes and gloomiest hours -- always, always; and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath; or if the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by.

Sarah, do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again.

Page 26: How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other? Series: Rebuilding The Wall

How Should We As God’s People Love Each Other?

As for my little boys, they will grow as I have done, and never know a father's love and care. Little Willie is too young to remember me long, and my blue-eyed Edgar will keep my frolics with him among the dimmest memories of his childhood. Sarah, I have unlimited confidence in your maternal care and your development of their characters.

Tell my two mothers his and hers I call God's blessing upon them. O Sarah, I wait for you there! Come to me, and lead thither my children.

HOW SHOULD WE LOVE?

AS CHRIST LOVED US - true and unfeigned!

Romans 12:9-10(NKJV) 9Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.

10Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;
