Giving Hope Through Fashion: Fair Trade Designs

• A little girl once dubbed “Miss Vanderbilt” by her mother, for her natural and unmistakable eye for high-quality and high-priced fashion, grew up and went to work for corporate America for over 2 decades. Feeling a motivated call to change her path and make a difference, she completed a 30-week course, which comprehensively explored issues such as poverty, homelessness, and unfair trade. Upon completion of the course, she immediately drew upon her talent for spotting attractive and stylish items, melded this with her passion for social justice issues, and launched US-based Fair Trade Designs in November 2011. That little girl was Stephanie King, now Owner and Founder of Fair Trade Designs.

6th Edition of Eco Fashion Week Vancouver

• Quite fittingly, the next edition of Eco Fashion Week in Vancouver will be Earth Week, April 21 – 24, 2013. The 6th Edition of Eco Fashion Week will feature five free seminars on sustainability in the garment and textile industry and fashion showcase and runway events with 25 designers and stylists. The event continues to grow each season, establishing itself as the world’s largest fashion week event dedicate solely to showcasing and advancing sustainability in fashion.

Recycled Metals

• Eco apparel designers have a whole array of materials and practices they can draw upon to make their lines more sustainable. In the jewelry world, however, by far the most eco-friendly thing a designer can do is recycle. That is, use recycled rather than newly-mined metals. Some designers incorporate other reclaimed materials as well.

• A call for sustainable cotton at affordable prices has been reinforced by the IKEA Group of Sweden in a commitment to the Business Call to Action. IKEA’s aim for its Better Cotton Initiative is “to ensure that consumers do not have to pay a premium for cotton products that are more sustainably farmed than conventional cotton—using less water and fewer chemicals and pesticides” in the entire product line by the end of 2015, The Corporate Social Responsibility Newswire (CSR) reports.
