Classique Hora Mundi - 5717
An invitation to travel across the continents and oceans illustrated on
three versions of the hand-guilloché lacquered dial, the Classique Hora
Mundi is the first mechanical watch with an instant-jump time-zone display.
Thanks to a patented mechanical memory based on two heart-shaped
cams, it instantly indicates the date and the time of day or night in a given
city selected using the dedicated pushpiece. History is still being written...

FROM THE ENGADIN TO THE OCEANS
The Engadin is a watershed. The Inn flows from here to the
Danube, and on to the Black Sea, while the water from the
Bernina Pass feeds the Po and ends up in the Adriatic. And the
waters from the Piz Lunghin flow through the Hinterrhein
on their way to the North Sea. With water as the focus of the
sports section of this magazine, we offer plenty of suggestions

«If you can dream it, you can do it», soll der berühmte Walt
Disney einmal gesagt haben. «Wenn Du davon träumen
kannst, kannst Du es auch tun.» Filip Zuan ist glücklich: «Es
war einfach cool! Überhaupt: Es könnte mir nicht besser lau-
fen.»
tern. Ein Blick hinter die Kulissen des Engadins!
Sports heaven in the Engadin
A heartwarming story – a young Engadin photographer has an
idea, rounds up his talented, high-performing sports enthusi-
ast friends, and finances his project via an Internet crowdfund-
ing platform. His friends are delighted and enthusiastically
lend him their skills as snowboarders, bikers and anglers. They
show him their sports and their favourite locations, and the
dream becomes reality. Filip Zuan says, «This kind of financ-
ing is well-established in the USA. I was amazed that it could
also work here in the Engadin.»
The great Walt Disney once said, «If you can dream it, you
can do it.» Filip Zuan is thrilled: «It was really cool! In fact,
it couldn’t have gone better.» Even as a child he always had
a camera in his hand, and later went on to study graphic de-
sign in Barcelona; he now practises both professions. All the
protagonists of his book live in the Engadin and are the em-
bodiment of their respective sports. Filip Zuan: «That was an
essential aspect for me. Some of them are at the top of their
game, nationally and at European level. I was determined that
the project should be totally authentic.» The pictures he has
produced show his friends playing ice hockey on black ice,
fishing from a standup paddleboard, jumping from cliffs or
skateboarding at night. He shows them cycling, practising
yoga, climbing. A glimpse behind the scenes of the Engadin!

Mein Engadin/My Engadin
Jahre weg vom Engadin.
I grew up in the Engadin and when I was only eight started
to work for the White Turf in St. Moritz – I sold programmes.
The White Turf and its horses have always been in our family.
My grandfather owned racehorses, as did my father, and at 18
I competed in my first skijoring race. For this sport you need
to be able to ski so well that during the race you don’t need
to think about your skiing technique for a second. Otherwise
you have no chance. Of course you need to know your way
around horses and to be fairly fit. White Turf offers top sport-
ing action and is a great mix of local colour and VIP glamour.
My career took me away from the Engadin for ten years, but
every time I drove back over the Julier Pass, I thought: ‘The
poets have got it right!’ The Engadin never stops moving you.
There’s always that feeling of coming home – even if you’ve
never been to the Engadin before.

Stabelle StabelleDER TYPISCHE ENGADINER STUHL
schen Engadiner Arvenholzstuhl gesessen.
Daraus
sind ungewöhnliche Stuhlobjekte von international bekannten
Designern entstanden.
THE TYPICAL ENGADIN CHAIR
Every guest has seen one in one or another of its guises; they
may have one of these typical Engadin Swiss pine chairs them-
selves or will at the very least have sat on one. The local word
for this kind of chair is a stabelle, and in the 16th century it
replaced the stool as the standard everyday item of seating fur-
niture. A stabelle has four slanted legs and a backrest that is
often carved with cutaway designs. Giovanna Lisignoli, design
curator and initiator of «Happen Projects», has got together
with a group of artists, with the mission of combining old and
new, imports and the home-produced, local and international,
familiar and foreign, tradition and reinterpretation. The re-
sult is a range of unusual chairs by internationally-renowned
designers.

Mit der Ausstellung De Chirico/Warhol – Self-Portraits eröffnet die Ga-
lerie Andrea Caratsch am 3. Dezember 2013 ihre neuen Galerieräume
an der Via Serlas 12 in St. Moritz. Rund 25 Selbstbildnisse – ikonen-
Jedes einzel-
gespickt.
alchemistisch anmutender Malerei jenen «grossen Malstrom», in

Galerie Andrea Caratsch inaugurates its new premises on Decem-
ber 3rd, 2013 with De Chirico/Warhol – Self-Portraits at Via Serlas
12 in St. Moritz where 25 self-portraits – Warhol’s iconic self-re-
presentations and de Chirico’s baroque portrait paintings – will be
exhibited in dialogue.
Andy Warhol revolutionised the genre of self-portraiture in the
20th century with iconic self-portrayals, following the steps of de
Chirico who already in the 1940’s anticipated postmodern citation
and the collage techniques of Pop Art. It is not the personal side
of the artist that is revealed in these paintings, rather a love for or-
chestration and stylisation which endured throughout their lives.
Both artists love role-playing, with one masquerading in baroque
costumes, and the other donning himself with fright-wigs or dark
sun glasses. Their experimentation with representation and the
topic of disguise was a new, compulsive need that resulted in the
production of hundreds of self-portraits. They are the only artists
in the history of art having outdone Rembrandt in the number of
created self-portraits and thereby associated obsession.
Stylistically different, these paintings are based on a similar method
in dealing with presentation and reproduction; with the help of
portrait photographs and references to paintings of Old Masters,
de Chirico slips into Baroque costumes and adorns himself with
borrowed stage props. Every Autoritratto in costume is thus imbued
with multiple artistic citations. Costumes and postures from fa-
mous paintings by Jacques-Louis David, Fra Galgario or Böcklin
are coupled with a personal portrait photograph of the artist. De
Chirico finally arranges this potpourri of models and translates it
back into a classical-looking painting. Warhol’s trademark is screen
printing. He uses photobooth strips, photographs and polaroids
of himself as models for countless self-portraits since 1963. The
repeated printing of a photographic motif on the same canvas has
the effect of alienating that same photograph, a technique often
used by Warhol. Multiple repetition visualizes that perfect repli-
cation as such is inexistent and that every repeated motif with its
different colours is unique. Warhol and de Chirico are both very
interested in seriality, each presenting their self-portraits in series
as fictional narratives. An ironic overlapping of subject and author-
ship is idiosyncratic to these self-portraits. By obsessive application
of reproductions, they transferred the classicist and romantic idea
of the creative genius into the 20th century – all in line with Ro-
land Barthes’ The Death of the Author.
The second exhibition Pantan (Rhaeto-Romanic: «Puddle»)
presents fifteen large-sized Puddle Paintings by John Armleder
through April 2014. Glitter, toys, small decorative articles of all
sorts and pots filled with paint, varnish and solvent are spilled over
the canvas in a mixture of chance and control. Armleder explores
the accidental outcome in a graphical way, which in turn is emble-
matic of his complete oeuvre. As is his custom, the artist hopes to
conjure up this ‘vast maelstrom’ in which value systems are swept
away and hierarchical criteria collapse while the mainstays of the
‘single thought’ crumble. These shimmering paintings are named
after the surrounding Engadin lakes and were created in the galle-
ry just before renovation started in the summer of 2012. They are
thus part of the gallery’s history.
The galleries in St. Moritz are open in season from Monday to
Saturday from 2 PM to 7 PM.

Wasser, Schnee und Eis
Water, snow and ice
Water is everything in the Engadin, in summer and winter. Wa-
ter from the Engadin flows into three oceans: the Inn has its
source on the watershed on Piz Lunghin, from where it makes
its way to the Black Sea, the Maira flows down southwards to
the Adriatic, and the Giulia joins the Rhine on its way to the
North Sea. Water, in the form of snow and ice, is what gives the
Engadin its winter image. Water, snow and ice are the basis of
the wide range of sporting activities on offer in St. Moritz.

230 Fahrradkilometer
Abschnitte aufteilen. Warum nicht jedes Jahr ein Stück weiter
fahren?
A CYCLING TOUR ALONG THE INN
By bike from Maloja to Innsbruck along the Inn river – what
a wonderful ride! This 230-kilometre cycle trail takes you
through wonderful landscapes, treating yourself along the way
to culinary, cultural and historical delights – the «Inn-Radweg»,
a long-distance cycle route along the Inn, is well-signposted and
leads from Maloja, through St. Moritz, Zuoz, Zernez and Scuol
to the border village of Martina. Once in Austria, it then contin-
ues through Landeck, Imst and Telfs to Innsbruck.
The main road between Maloja and Sils-Maria is best avoided,
which gives the opportunity to head through the extremely
beautiful woods. There is even a book dedicated to this cycle
Innsbruck» (Along the Inn – a cycle ride from Maloja to Inns-
bruck, published in German), Pia Seiler describes this route in
eight stages, giving numerous tips on attractions and places to
eat and stay along the way (Werd-Verlag, 2012. Available from
the Wega bookshop in St. Moritz.)
A cycle ride along the Inn can also be broken down into shorter
stages. Why not do a small part of it every year?

is deciding... There are 350 kilometres of
pistes, 34 mountain restaurants and shut-
tle buses to the lifts and funiculars, and
hotel guests also have the benefit of the
Kempinski Alpine Sport Ski School and
the Kempinski Sport Shop.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
The Engadin uplands are without doubt
a cross-country skiing paradise. Gliding
along through unspoilt snowy expanses –
what a dream! There are 220 kilometres
of cross-country pistes, from Maloja to
Zernaz, and the Engadin Ski Marathon
in March is a highlight of the winter sea-
son. Lessons are available for beginners.
Just as much fun whether you are an ex-
pert or simply enjoy gliding with friends
over frozen lakes, cross-country skiing
can make a great change from skiing and
snowboarding.
LANGLAUF
Die Engadiner Hochebene ist ein Lang-
laufparadies, keine Frage. Auf schmalen
Brettern durch die weisse Weite glei-
ten – ein Traum. 220 Kilometer Loipen
stehen zur Verfügung, von Maloja bis
Zernez. Der Engadin Ski Marathon im
März ist ein Höhepunkt der Wintersai-
son. Für Einsteiger gibt es Kurse. Lang-
lauf ist ein Wintersport, der auf Spitzen-
niveau ebenso Spass macht wie beim
gemütlichen über die Seen Gleiten. Eine
tolle Variante zum Skifahren und Snow-
boarden.
TOBOGGANING
There is a long toboggan run for the whole
family, leading from Preda to Bergün, with
4.2 kilometres of bends and fast straights.
The starting point at Preda is easily
reached on the Rhaetian Railway, and to-
boggans are readily available to hire at the
station. Particularly daring tobogganers
will love the Muottas Muragl run – 4 kilo-
metres, 20 bends and an overall 705-me-
tre drop down into the valley. Added to
this is an absolutely stunning ride on the
rack-and-pinion railway to one of the most
beautiful viewing points on Earth.

Segeln im Engadin
Sailing in the Engadin
Sailing in the mountains? But of course! Sailing takes place on
all the Engadin’s lakes – the reliable Maloja wind makes sure of
it. There are sailing schools, sailing clubs and top-level sailing
regattas. And there is no shortage of perfect sailing weather.
Since it was founded in 1941, the St. Moritz Sailing Club has
organised regattas for Swiss, European and World Champion-
ships. The club has its own sailing school, boats for hire and
a perfectly-located restaurant on the bank of Lake St. Moritz.
Lake Silvaplana is perfectly suited to sailing regattas – it is
long enough, wide enough and is blessed with the ideal winds.

BADESEEN
Stand-Up-Paddeling, kurz SUP. Die
besten Bedingungen, um über den See
zu paddeln, sind am Vormittag. Die
Kitesailing-Schule in Silvaplana bietet
Ihnen entspannten Sport, verbunden
mit einem Naturerlebnis, mit geführten
SUP-Touren auf dem Silvaplanersee in-
klusive Einführung ins Gerät und in die
Technik. Und wer alleine aufs Wasser
will, geht einfach hin, mietet sein SUP
und los geht’s.
LAKE SWIMMING
Even if you feel the lakes high up in the
mountains are too cold for a dip while out
walking, it needn’t mean missing out on
your swimming. The Lej da Staz, or Staz
Lake, lies between St. Moritz and Pontresi-
na in an idyllic forest clearing with wetlands
and reeds. The Lej Nair lies 200 metres be-
low the Hahnensee among larches and firs,
and can only be reached on foot. A little
below it, not far from the ski jump, is the
Lej Marsch, one of the most popular lakes
in the Engadin for swimming.
STANDUP PADDLE BOARDING
It is new, and rather cool – standup pad-
dling, known as SUP. The best condi-
tions for lake paddling are found in the
mornings. The kite sailing school in
Silvaplana offers this relaxing sport com-
bined with exploring the natural world,
in its guided SUP tours on Lake Silva-
plana, which include an introduction to
the equipment and techniques. And if
you’re happy going it alone you can sim-
ply hire a SUP and you’re off!
KITE-SURFEN
Selbst-
verständlich lässt sich alles Material und
die richtige Kleidung dazu mieten. Üb-
rigens auch für die Wintervariante, das
Snow-Kiten. Na, wagen Sie es?
KITE SURFING
Kite surfing is one of the most spec-
tacular summer sports. Experts will be
in heaven on Lake Silvaplana, with the
Maloja wind the key to their happiness.
For those who want to see what it’s all
about there are have-a-go sessions and
beginners’ lessons. Of course the equip-
ment and correct clothing is all available
for hire. There is also a winter variant,
snowkiting. Are you up for it?

das kulturelle Sommerhighlight im Engadin mit internatio-
naler Ausstrahlung.

7. St. Moritz Art Masters findet vom 22. bis 31. August statt.
Mehr zum St. Moritz Art Masters im Gespräch mit Kurator
und Co-Gründer Reiner Opoku auf Seite 31.
The St. Moritz Art Masters has been getting it right for a long
while, having made an international name for itself as the cul-
tural highlight of the Engadin summer. The list of famous art-
ists, as well as collectors and galleries, who come together each
year at the St. Moritz Art Masters in the Engadin, is impressive
in both scope and quality. Following the focus on China in 2013,
the featured country at the 7th St. Moritz Art Masters in 2014
will be India. You can find out more about the St. Moritz Art

Interview
hinzu.
zen. Alleine was hier schon alles an Institutionen und Galerien
Anliegen. Wir wollen aufzei-
gen, was es gibt, und stellen dies
mit dem St. Moritz Art Masters
in einen neuen Kontext. Integ-
rieren ist unsere Aufgabe. Wir
sehen uns als Plattform.
Was war Ihre Vision?
Wir möchten, dass dieses
Kunstfestival eines Tages für
die Kultur das wird, was das
World Economic Forum in
Davos für die Wirtschaft und
Politik bedeutet: Eine kulturel-
so nirgends. In New York, in Paris, in London finden Sie sehr
viel Kultur.
Reiner Opoku, after six years, what is the secret of the
St. Moritz Art Masters’ success?
Visitors usually come to the Engadin in summer because of
the wonderful natural environment – and we can offer them
a cultural upgrade. There is already a rich and varied cultural
scene in the Engadin; with the St. Moritz Art Masters we are
adding to the choice. As well as the sports, the social life, the
fine wining and dining, people can also experience and parti-
cipate in cultural events – at a level you would normally only
expect to find in major cities.
WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE IMPORTANT?
The Engadin shouldn’t be underestimated in terms of culture.
You only have to look at the number of institutions and gal-
leries that have been here for many years– a great mix at a
high level. We are now concerned with bringing everything
together, channelling it and
adding more. We want to show
what is here, and the St. Moritz
Art Masters also presents it in
a new context. Our mission is
integration. We see ourselves
as a platform.
What was your original vision?
Ultimately, we want this art
festival to become as signifi-
cant for culture as the World
Economic Forum in Davos is
for economics and politics – a
cultural platform that presents
visitors with contemporary art
and encourages them to think about it. Nature and culture –
these are the two aspects we believe to be at the heart of the
matter. There’s nothing like it anywhere else. You have a lot
of culture in New York, in Paris, in London – but this natural
environment, that’s something you only find in the Engadin.
Art can take the valley, the mountains, the lakes and use them
to present some unusual challenges. On the other hand this
landscape also makes us slow things down, giving rise to a to-
tally different quality. I am proud that we’ve got so far, and
delighted that so many new people have come to know the
St. Moritz Art Masters. The festival also means that I come
here very often myself, which I love.

Axel Rüdlin is the new chef responsible for all the food served

loves the Engadin: «I really like the winter and am a keen
freerider.» Rüdlin has known the Engadin for quite some time;
in 2003 he worked at Jöhri’s Talvo and has been at the Kem-
pinski Grand Hotel des Bains for three years. «Once you’ve
got to know the Engadin, you keep coming back. That’s just
how it is – you can’t help it.» When it comes to his cuisine,
Axel Rüdlin believes the produce itself is very important. In
other words, «The produce has to be outstanding. And eve-
rything that is added must complement it and be in perfect
harmony – right through to the garnish. Next to the quality, it
is the taste that I consider to be all-important.»

THE KEMPINSKI RESTAURANTS

Das Kempinski Palace Potoroz in Slowe-
nien ist eine Mittelmeerlegende. An der
Adria in Istrien gelegen, verbindet es die
Opulenz und den Glanz der früheren ös-
terreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie mit
zeitgemässer Hotellerie der Spitzenklas-
se. 164 Zimmer, 17 Suiten, Restaurants,
Wellness und ein Traum von einem Ball-
saal machen dieses Haus zu einem Erleb-
nis. 1910 erbaut, wurde es 2008 in neuer
Grandezza von Kempinski wieder eröff-
net. Einzigartig, königlich.
MALTA
meer. Selbstverständlich bietet das Haus
deshalb nicht nur Entspannung und Er-
holung, sondern es verfügt auch über ein
eigenes Dive Center mit Tauchschule.
Genau das Richtige für luxuriöse Tage an
der Mittelmeersonne.
JORDANIEN

in Amman, Jordanien, ist umgeben von
Jahrtausende alter Geschichte. Es liegt
400 Meter unterhalb des Meeresspiegels

historischen und religiösen Sehenswür-
digkeiten wie etwa die verlassene Stadt
Petra, Bethanien oder der Berg Nebo.
Natur, Geschichte und Religion begeg-
nen sich hier, während Sie alle Annehm-
lichkeiten eines Luxushotels geniessen
können.
SLOVENIA
The Kempinski Palace Potoroz in Slov-
enia is a Mediterranean legend. Locat-
ed on the Adriatic, in Istria, this hotel
blends the opulence and glamour of the
former Austro-Hungarian Empire with
top-class contemporary hotel manage-
ment. It is a wonderful experience, of-
fering 164 bedrooms, 17 suites, restau-
rants, wellness facilities and a dream of a
ballroom. Built in 1910, it was renovated
and reopened in 2008, fully restored
to the grandeur you would expect of a
Kempinski hotel. Unique and regal.
MALTA
The Kempinski San Lawrenz on Gozo
is a hideaway resort of the highest class.
An oasis of luxury and peace, it is sur-
rounded by a fairytale garden landscape
and close to some of the most beautiful
waters for diving that the Mediterrane-
an has to offer. This means the hotel not
only offers rest and relaxation, but also
has its own diving centre with diving
school. The perfect place for luxurious
days in the Mediterranean sunshine.
JORDAN
The Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea
in Amman, Jordan is surrounded by
thousands of years of ancient history. It
is 400 metres below sea level on the edge
of the Dead Sea and close to a number
of historical and religious sights, such
as the abandoned city of Petra, Bethany
and the mountain of Nebo. Nature, his-
