With aspirations of it becoming the ‘Sexiest Hotel in Europe’ Hotel Gotham recently opened its doors at 100 King Street, also known as the ‘King of King Street’. Bespoke Hotels, Marshall Construction Group and interior design firm Squid-inc were behind the renovation of the 7 story Grade ll-listed building.

The prestigious 5 Star hotel pays homage to the origins of the building in a variety of ways. Designed in 1928 by Sir Edward Lutyens, the building’s construction was completed in 1935. The hotel’s sumptuous interior references the art-deco heritage of the 1930s and also has links to the building’s original heritage as a bank with swag bags and bankers’ briefcases cleverly positioned around the guestrooms.

Newhey was challenged to design and produce carpet to flow through the hotels corridors and extravagant guestrooms, with a design brief of creating luxurious carpets that complement the art-deco style of the hotel.

Design Solution

Newhey’s design team collaborated with Oliver Redfern from Squid-inc to agree on two striking geometric monochrome designs to feature in the corridors and guestrooms. The designs were selected to tie in with the elegance of the establishment, from the leather clad walls to the trunk style cocktail cabinets.

The bespoke carpets were created using Newhey’s Colortec+ technology. The product is tufted using computer yarn placement technology, a high-tech innovation used on projects that require a highly durable product to deal with high footfall. This carpet construction also allowed for a cost effective solution. Another unconventional feature of Colortec+ technology is that the carpet is constructed using 80% wool and 20% Nylon hank dyed pile yarns, allowing Newhey to create a high quality carpet.

The art-deco designs may pay reference to the past but the technology used to produce the carpet definitely doesn’t. Newhey’s revolutionary secondary backing system ‘evobac’ features on every design. Evobac is made using 100% recycled plastic bottles and offers a sustainable option for the hotel, while not decreasing the luxury feel of the carpet.

‘’Right from the beginning the Gotham carpet design needed to have a simple graphic quality. I discussed the simple chevron design with Chris who straight away understood the simplicity I required yet helped develop an extra layer to the carpet design by suggesting it was produced in a Twist & Velvet, adding an extra dimensional quality to the design. Throughout the process it was a delight to work with the Newhey team who provided a very professional service from start to finish.’’
