Congratulations to the Class of 2018! They had a 51.5% university pass. In thirteen subjects they excelled and gave us a 100% pass rate. Mooketsi Mabula was the top performer with five distinctions. The new academic year started off with a bang when we welcomed 203 new grade 8 learners. Congratulations to the Class of 2018! They had a 51.5% university pass. In thirteen subjects they excelled and gave us a 100% pass rate. Mooketsi Mabula was the top performer with ve distinctions.

The new academic year started off with a bang when we welcomed 203 new grade 8 learners.

Our school is an institution of academic excellence. This fact is proven by the growth in learner numbers. We currently have 1025 learners. Our school is becoming a school of choice.

The safety of all our learners is the main priority. In the light of what happened at Hoërskool Driehoek, EXCO of the SGB appointed structural engineers to inspect the condition of our school buildings. We are awaiting feedback in order to decide how to maintain the buildings to create a safe environment for all learners and staff.

We welcome the following permanent academic staff: Ms Ilana Steytler (an old Woerie) – Hospitality Studies and TechnologyMs Frané Jacobs – Afrikaans Huistaal and EAT Mr Klaus Louis Jansen van Vuuren – Dramatic Arts and EnglishMs Santa Maritz – English Home Langauge and FALMs Karmi de Jager – Computer Applications Technology and Economics

On the sport eld we had numerous successes. The main part of the rst term was spent on athletics, where we competed in the C-league Inter High on 20 February. The competition was very tough and we want to congratulate all coaches and athletes on an excellent season. After all the hard work, we managed to stay in the C-league for 2020. ‘n Spesiale gelukwensing gaan aan ons geesgroep. Vir die eerste keer in baie jare moes leerders aan die amptelike sangkompetisie deelneem, waar ons slegs met een skamele punt agter die wenners geëindig het. Geluk aan al die Woeries vir ‘n uitstekende atletiekseisoen.

The Swimming Inter High took place on Monday 25 February. We excelled and managed to nish fourth out of nine schools with 20 individual medals.

Well done to our senior girls tennis team who managed to win all their matches so far. Thank you for your excellent effort during the league.

To the parents and guardians of all Woeries – thank you for your loyal support. This year we need even more support with the new fundraiser that will benet all our learners. A special word of thanks to all the parents who pay school fees so diligently. It ensures the smooth running of the school.

My wish for every member of our school community is success in 2019.

10 May our choir festival will take place! Details to follow.

This year's grade 8 orientation programme focused on the

intergration of the new learners to our school. The "froggies" were exposed to a two week

programme aimed at inclusivity and establishing meaningful relationships. They were also taught

the school rules, code of conduct and our school's values and beliefs. We wish the grade 8 class of 2019 all the best during their high school career and encourage

each learner to make the most of every opportunity that comes

their way .

The rst weekend of February the choir mem-bers departed for the choir camp. The four voice groups divided into separate training areas. Hours of getting to know words, notes and correct pronunciation followed. Favourite songs were soon determined, “Salem 1965” (Let my people go), Dies Irae (Latin song), Roosmaryn is vir herinnering, Thina Nto Zabantu - our traditional African song.

After 14 hours of practise in total the highlight was Sunday morning when all voice groups sang together, a truly wonderful sound!

GRADE 8 orientation

All swimmers ended the season by participating in the D-league Inter High gala on Monday, 25 February. Nine schools participated and our team ended in 4th place and won 20 individual medals. Patrick Hepke managed a rst place in the U15 Boys 50m backstroke and the U15 Boys won the 200m Free Style Relay.

Well done to the swimmers, Mr Botha and all the coaches.

On Saturday, 10 March, the choir was invited to perform in the first of a series of Choral Celebrations at Unisa. It was the perfect dress rehearsal for a very busy May in the 2nd term. The choir kicks off with the Eisteddfod (7th), the HSHV Choir Festival (10th), the ATKV Regionals (17th) and a performance at Universiteitsoord Dutch Reformed Church (24th).

The last meeting at Wonderboom High School (8 February) set the tone for the competition to come. After the team building on 15 February the Woerie athletes were focused and ready for Inter High. Congratulations to Chisom Onyejiuwa who was awarded the Junior Victrix Ludorum trophy as well as the best junior track athlete of the day. Itumeleng Tshotsetsi broke the girls under 17 3000m record, well done! After the nal score was announced the Woerie athletics team was placed in sixth position overall. Mission accomplished.

Thank you to all coaches, athletes and parents for your time and effort.

This year, marking our schools progres-sion into the Inter High C-League, we were invited to not only partake in a multi-school athletics competition, but also in a school spirit show-off! In the weeks leading up to the Inter High, 90 learners and a team of passionate teachers worked tirelessly to put together - The Greatest Show. Costumes, claps, choreography and a mountain of lyrics were prepared to ensure that the Woerie Spirit Group would be a force to be reckoned with! The group and cheerleaders, dressed to the nines, arrived at the TUKS Athletics stadium at the crack of dawn, and so the games began. For eight hours straight, the group of energetic cheerers stood in the ery sun, singing their hearts out! The Woeries were denitely the underdogs in the competition, having never before taken part in such an event!

The rst timers, however, denitely stood up to the challenge, and marked their arrival on the scene with a bang - missing the Spirit Trophy with a whopping one point! For the group's rst time competing, they deserve a huge round of applause. The Woerie Spirit Group will be back on the stand again next year, ready to take on the big dogs and show them who's best!
