A special alumnus is returning to the campus to toast SUNY Delhi’s 100th birthday. World renowned wine expert and educator Kevin Zraly ’70 will headline the college’s Centennial Gala on May 4.

“We’re honored that Kevin has cleared his schedule to join us for the gala,” says President Candace Vancko. “Itwillbeamemorableeveningaswecelebrateamile-stoneinDelhi’shistorywithoneofourmost accomplished alumni.”

Zralyhasgoneontobecomeoneoftheworld’s leadingwineauthorities.HeauthoredWindows on the World Complete Wine Course,whichhassoldoverthreemillioncopies,aswellasUltimate Wine Companion, Kevin Zraly’s American Wine Guide, Kevin Zraly’s Wine Journal, and A Glass Half Full: A Cellar Master’s Journey Through Life and Wine. Zraly hasbeenhonoredwiththeJamesBeardAwardforWine and Spirits Professional of the Year, Santé’s Wine ProfessionaloftheYearAward,theEuropeanWineCouncilLifetimeAchievementAwardandtheJamesBeardLifetimeAchievementAward.HereturnstoDelhitocollaboratewithhospitalityfacultyand students to create an event that is sure to top last year’s opening gala.

Zraly’swineselectionsareonlypartoftheeveningcelebration. Supporting scholarships is a goal of the centennialcampaign,sothegaladinnerwillbenefittheKevinZralyScholarshipEndowment.Foundedin1999,thisendowmenthasgrowntobecomeoneofthelargest sources of annual scholarships for hospitality students at SUNY Delhi.

Associate Professor Allen Wachter, Director of Delhi’sVeterinaryTechnologyManagementbaccalaureate program, has been selected as a FulbrightSpecialistbytheJ.WilliamFulbrightForeignScholarshipBoard(FSB).

As a Fulbright Specialist, Dr. Wachter is in the processofbeingmatchedwithanoverseasacademicinstitutionthathasrequestedassistance via the Fulbright Commission or through U.S. embassies. Fulbright Specialists typicallyservetwotosixweeksinprojectsthatfocus on the development needs of their host institutions.

TheFSBisconsideringDr.WachterfortwoprojectsinSub-SaharaAfrica.Thefirstproject

is to develop a veterinary technician program at the University of Namibia. The second project is to teach large animal management to veterinary science students at Mekelle UniversityinEthiopia.ThefinalprojectselectionwillbebasedonareviewbyDr.Wachter’speersandbyFSB.

“TeachingisawayIcangivebacktotheprofession, especially in countries such as Africawheretheirlivesdependsomuchon the care of their animals,” Dr. Wachter says. Dr. Wachter has prior experience as a missionaryinZambiawherehehelpedbuildanorphanage.“IcamebacktotheU.S.withasensethatIneededtodomore,”hesays,andthat led him to pursue a Fulbright exchange.

Delhi Professor Named Fulbright Specialist

Twoworksofart,fundedthroughprivatedonations,wereinstalledontheDelhicampusthisfall.“Reunited,”(below)carvedfromgreenopalserpentinebyartistTauraiMutigwa,wasdonatedbyDr.GaryandLyndaPreiser in memory of their daughter, Sarah, and installed on the Agora. “CieloMobiles,”(above)twoaerialsculptures,wereinstalledintheFarrellCenterloft.“Cielo,”whichmeans“intheopenair,”wasdesignedandcreatedbyartistBrianSchmittofSacramento,CA.SUNYDelhiandHudsonValleyCommunity

College have signed an agreement that willallowgraduatesofHudsonValley’sConstructionTechnologyandCivilEngineeringTechnologydegreeprogramstospendafifthsemesteratHudsonValleyforcontinued classroom/laboratory learning and a sixth semester in an internship before moving on to a fourth year at Delhi to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Thisarticulationagreementassuresthatallcreditswilltransferseamlessly.Itisopentocurrentstudents,aswellasalumni,oftheconstructionandengineeringprograms.StudentshavetheadvantageofajuniorrankingwhenbeginningatDelhiintheirthirdyear.

“PreviousstudentswhohavetakenthepathfromHudsonValleytoDelhihaveexperiencedgreat success in school and in the job market upon graduation. We expect continued academic excellencefromHudsonValleystudents,andwe’remakingtransfermoreaccessiblewiththisparticularagreement,”saysEricRobert’96,DeanandAssociateProfessorofAppliedSciencesandBuildingTechnologies.

Veterinary Science Graduates Top National Average GraduatesofSUNYDelhi’sVeterinaryScienceTechnologyprogramtoppedthenationalaverage for the second consecutive year on the VeterinaryTechnicianNationalExamination(VTNE).

Eighty-fourpercentofDelhi2012graduateswhotooktheexamforthefirsttimesurpassedthenationalaverageof78.5percent.

“This validates SUNY Delhi’s position as one of the nation’s premier programs in the Veterinary ScienceTechnologyfield,”saysProvostJohnNader.“Externalexamsareagreatmeasureofprogramquality.”

TheVeterinaryTechnicianNationalExamination(VTNE)isusedtoevaluateentry-level veterinary technicians’ competency to practice and be credentialed. Most states and provincesrequireapassingscoreontheVTNEas a criterion for credentialing. The exam is administeredasacomputer-basedexamthreetimes a year throughout the U.S. and Canada by the American Association of Veterinary StateBoards.

“MiseEnPlace,”afull-lengthfilmproducedbyKentGarrettProductions,premieredontheDelhicampusSeptember21atared-carpeteventthatkickedoffFamily Day Weekend.

Nearly400turnedoutforthefilm,whichchroniclesDelhistudents’risetonationalculinarychampionsin2010andfollowsthefive-memberteamthroughtry-outs,thebusyschoolyear,andtothefinalcompetition.

Thefilmoffersaverypersonalandin-depthlookintothedemandingand competitiveworldofhighcuisinethroughtheeyesofthosejustenteringtheircareersaschefsandisattractingattentionbeyondDelhi.“MiseEnPlace”iscurrentlyafinalistintheBuffaloNiagaraFilmFestival,whichrunsfrom April10-14.

GarrettservedasseniorproducerwiththeNBCNightlyNewswithTomBrokawand10yearsbeforethatwasaproducerwithTheCBSEveningNewswithDanRather.Duringhisjournalismcareer,GarrettwashonoredwithtwonewsanddocumentaryEmmyAwardsandaPeabodyAwardasproducerontheNationalEducationTelevisionseries,“BlackJournal.”Inaddition,hehasproducedthreehour-long,networkdocumentariesforCBSReportsandhasworkedasnewsdirectorintheaward-winningWCVB-TVNewsandPublicAffairsunitinNeedham, MA.

Delhi Ranks in Top 20 “Best for Vets”

SUNYDelhiisranked17thonthe“BestforVets:CareerandTechnicalColleges”listinthe2013“BestforVets”byMilitary Times, also earning the title “Military Friendly” title from G.I. Jobs magazine for the second consecutive year.

“Tobevet-friendly,youreallyneedtofocusontheneedsofthestudent,whichiswhatwedosowell,”saysMicheleDeFreece,DirectoroftheResnickLearningCenter/EOP/Veteran Services. “Whether through enrollment services, financialaidoracademics,wepromoteaseamlessprocessfor our student veterans.”

Delhiwasamongmorethan650schoolsthatrespondedtothemagazine’ssurvey,whichconsistedofnearly150questions.Scoresarebasedonacollege’sdemonstrationofspecificeffortstoaccommodatevetsandactive-dutyservice members in areas that they value most in a college or university.

Followingthesehonors,SUNYDelhi’sVeteranServiceshosted a panel presentation “SUNY Delhi Salutes Veterans”inconjunctionwiththecollege’sAlumniAssociation. Delhi-SUNY ESF Partnership Offers Exclusive Transfer Agreement SUNY Delhi is making it easier for its landscape architecturemajorstotakethenextsteptoward afour-yeardegreethroughanexclusivetransfer agreementwiththeSUNYCollegeofEnvironmentalScienceandForestry(SUNY-ESF)thisfall.

Delhi’s Landscape Management and Design associate’sdegreegraduateswillbeabletopursueafour-yeardegreeatSUNY-ESFinSyracusefollowingthecompletionofatwo-yeardegreeatDelhi.

“Thisprogramwillbeveryattractivetostudents whocanbenefitfromsmallerclassroomsandone-on-oneattentionintheirfirstyearsofcollege,”saysAssociateProfessorBirgittaBrophy.“Receiving thespecializedattentionweprovidecantranslateinto greater success for students in the long run.”

The Harlem Globetrotters joined President Candace Vancko and members of the SUNY Delhi Student Senate executive board after presenting her with a special Globetrotter jersey in honor of the college’s 100th birthday.

College Council Chair AppointedNancy K. Deming has been appointed by GovernorAndrewM.CuomoaschairoftheSUNY Delhi College Council. Demingisamatrimonialandfamilylawlitigatorwithover30yearsofexperience.ShebeganpracticinginNewYorkCityin1980andthenbecameapartnerofNewhouse&Demingin1985.Demingbrought her practice to Delhi in 1992, joining theDelawareCountyBarAssociation.A member for over 20 years, she served aspresidentfrom2007-2009.DemingisalsoamemberoftheNewYorkStateBarAssociation,specificallyinFamilyLaw.Sheholdsabachelor’sdegreefromNewYorkUniversityandwasadmittedtopracticelawafterservingaclerkshipwithasmallWallStreetlawfirm.Demingpreviouslyservedasa member and president of the Delhi Central SchoolDistrictBoardofEducation.

TheDelhiCampusChildCareCenter(DC-4)hasearnedafive-yearrenewalofitsaccreditationfromtheNationalAssociationfortheEducationofYoungChildren(NAEYC).

DC-4conductedanextensiveself-studyprocessthatmeasureditsservicesagainstthe10NAEYCearly childhood program standards and more than 400relatedaccreditationcriteria.Italsocompletedanon-sitevisitbyNAEYClastfall.

“Only eight percent of all preschools and other earlychildhoodprogramsareaccreditedbytheNAEYC,sothismakesourrenewalveryrewarding,”saysKarenWallace,DC-4Director.“Ourstaffworkedhardtoensurewemettherequirementsforrenewalatournewlocation.”

DC-4unveiledanewly-constructedbuildingontheValleyCampusinaribboncuttingeventonOctober23.Theeventcelebrated$6.5millioninstatesupportsecuredbySenatorJohnBonacic.Alsoattheevent,theCentercelebratedanewpartnership,theCarouselChildren’sProgram,withTheArcofDelawareCounty.

Delhi Construction Among Top in Northeast RegionSUNY Delhi earned second place in the 23rd Annual Associated Schools of Construction(ASC)regionalstudentdesign-buildcompetitioninMorristown,NJ,November9-10.

Studentsweregiven15hourstodraftawrittenbidproposalforaprojectbythesponsoringfirm,GilbaneBuildingCompany.Theydesigned,estimated,scheduledanddevelopedsitelogisticsplans,companyprofiles,policies,staffingplansandLeadershipinEnergyandEnvironmentalDesign(LEED)scoresheets.Studentswerethenrequiredtoproducea35minutePowerPointpresentationbythenextmorningto“winthejob.”Whiledraftingtheproposal,studentswerenotpermittedtousetheInternetandwerenotabletoconsultwithfaculty.RepresentativesfromGilbaneservedasjudgesforthecompetition.

“Inmyopinion,design-buildisthemostrigorouscategoryofthethreepresentedattheASCcompetition,”saysJaredYando’07,ConstructionTechnologyandManagementInstructor.“Thejudgessaidtherankingwasextremelycloseinthedesign-buildcategorywithRogerWilliamsedgingusbyjustafewpoints.Thejudges commended our students on their professionalism and team camaraderie.”

Othercompetingteamsincluded:RogerWilliamsUniversity,RochesterInstituteofTechnology,NorwichUniversity,CentralConnecticutStateUniversity,PolytechnicInstituteofNewYorkUniversity,andPennsylvaniaCollegeofTechnology.

Nearly75friends,faculty,staffandalumni attended a Rochester reception in November honoring Dominic Morales’ 37yearsofservicetoSUNYDelhiandtheturfgrassindustry.Theevent,co-sponsored by the Alumni Association and theNewYorkStateTurfgrassAssociation,sparked contributions totaling more than$25,000foranewscholarshipendowmentintheMoralesfamilyname.ThescholarshipwillsupportstudentsmajoringinTurfManagement,GolfCourse Operations, Landscape Design andManagementandGolfCourseManagement beginning this fall.

Linens are provided but you may want to bring some additional items for added comfort, such as extra blankets and pillows, toiletries, and cooler with ice. Blocks of rooms for specific reunion groups can be held until May 1 with prior notice.
