NOTES FROM THE PUBLISHER

Dear Readers,

I have to say, the unseasonably cold weather we have had in our Florida “winter” this year has been a shock! Sitting at a conference table in full winter gear with the team discussing swimming pools and outdoor living spaces almost seemed comical when paired with conversation about needing ice scrapers on a few mornings! Despite the cold weather surprise, we know better than pack up our summer goods – the sun and heat are always just around the corner in our beautiful state! Knowing that, we at Home Renovation Magazine continue in our tradition of bringing you the “Creating the Ultimate Outdoor Oasis” issue just in time to convert your freezer-burned backyard into a private retreat! We’ve filled this issue with a wide range

of information intended to assist you in planning your outdoor renovation. Swimming pools, landscaping, decorating, design ideas, pavers, decking and more await your eager eyes! If you need more motivation than that to plan your project before summer hits, come on out to The Central Florida Home & Garden Show on March 19 – 21st. You’ll have the opportunity to meet some of the professionals responsible for the beautiful work seen in our showcase section…past and present! Building a wish-list is just the beginning of any renovation project and the Home & Garden Show is the best way to see and touch a variety of new products in action and engage in informal consultations with potential businesses. Order your tickets online today to save $3.00 off regular admission prices: www.centralflhomeandgardenshow.com – We hope to see you there!

We have just finished the design work on a line of models for a local builder-developer. After doing the marketing research, he has decided to offer the option of a free-standing pool pavilion with each of his models! One of the first considerations in the design of a new pavilion would be the architectural style. If your existing home is heavily themed in one particular style, it may make sense to continue in the same direction and use similar details and colors. There is nothing wrong, however, with striking out in a completely different direction. Take advantage of the opportunity to make a bold new statement!

The three Cabana elevations on the next page all have the same floor plan (above), consisting of a structure approximately 32’ x 15’ with a kitchen at one end and a fireplace at the other end. Through the use of different column styles, spacing and materials, each has its own unique character. Of course these are only three of a number of styles, limited only by your imagination, budget and physical lot and zoning constraints.

The Tuscan Cabana has a low-sloped roof with barrel tiled roof. The columns are large and square and clad in a rustic fieldstone. Exposed rafters and stone flooring emphasize the “Italian farmhouse” feeling.

The Contemporary Cabana features simple, rectangular shapes. The material is horizontal siding and thin horizontal stone veneer. A stained concrete floor would complement the style.

The Traditional Cabana has an asphalt shingled roof with a relatively steep pitch. The column sizing and spacing, along with eave and cornice detailing should be done according to the rules of traditional architecture. Tile flooring would complete this style beautifully.

What makes a pavilion especially appealing is that it can serve as an attractive buffer from the neighbors or alleyway, adding a whole new living space to an existing home with little impact on the family while it is being constructed.

Q: DO YOU HAVE INEXPENSIVE IDEAS ON CUTTING MY ELECTRIC COSTS?

A: Installing a high energy-efficient window film on east and westfacing exposures will lower the air conditioning impact.• Check for any leakage in the air duct pathways throughout the attic.• Adding Solar attic fans….which do not require wiring and, thus, consume no electricity! They come in 10, 20 or 30 watt sizes andreduce attic temperatures 20 – 40 degrees! This lowers and lessensthe impact of heat saturating your insulation.• Before you run your dishwasher make sure you run hot water toyour sink so the electric element isn’t heating 72 degree water up to140 degrees (as it will for sanitary purposes)!

Q: In my home, which appliance uses the most energy?

A: Your electric water heater consumes more electricity because1) It’s necessary and 2) it is in full use all 12 months of the year(unlike your air conditioner). To put this in perspective, you havetwo 4,500-watt elements that alternate at the top and bottom ofyour water heating tank. When just one of them comes on it’s theequivalent of forty-five 100-watt light bulbs all coming on at once!

Q: What are some alternatives then?

A: Tankless water heaters usually require more than one outletand will still use the same amount of energy required to heat a gallonof water to a certain temperature. This does not change because it isbeing heated at a faster rate; it is, however, more convenient and willreduce standby losses about 10- 20% versue a tank type.• Natural gas heaters are more efficient to operate than electric, but you must have natural gas in your area to convert, not to mentionthe initial cost of conversion can be pricey if it is only for thatpurpose. Propane gas is equivalent to the cost of electric.• Solar water heater sizing combines matching the householdusage with the total collector area, providing up to 80 – 90% ofyear round hot water uses. A 10-minute shower uses 47 gallons ofhot water…the size of most tanks! Local incentives and currentrebates have made this the most popular alternative since the initialcost is recovered on average of less than 4 years at today’s electricrates. Lasting 30+ years, it will be paid for using the same money you already spend on that portion of your electric bill, leaving you with 26 years of free power generation! For added convenience, follow-up questions can also be e-mailed to [email protected] for a direct response.

REDESIGN YOUR

The key in creating the ultimate outdoor oasis is to make it yours and create your own personal sanctuary. I suggest doing this by creating elements that appeal to all five senses. Depending on the location and how prominent the space is in relation to the main house, your new oasis can have a theme that is either complementary to, or is a fresh departure from the style of the main house.

TROPICAL OASISIf your goal is to create a tropical feel the addition of a permanent or a seasonal fire pit helps create an inviting space and will anchor your oasis. The warmth on winter days also feels great. Added scents of flowers in your garden or candles on a lanai add to the oasis getaway experience. Polished black river stones as a ground treatment are calming and easy on the eyes, their color and texture soothing to soul.

JUNGLE RETREATPatterns and textures are the key to defining a Jungle theme. The selection of a tile in the floor or backsplash or the contrasting texture in a Sisal area rug add dimension to the theme. This change in textures creates visual interest, as does playing with scale changes. Maybe it’s a large scaled pattern contrasted to a tight delicate pattern. The biggest mistake people make in accessorizing spaces is the scale of the pieces used to finish the space. It is easy to find objects that match the theme you are creating; it can be a challenge to find pieces that are big enough to be meaningful in the space!

ASIAN REFLECTIONToday an Asian themed oasis is frequently based on the Zen concept. These spaces feature clean lines and a neutral color palette with accents of red or black. Simplicity is the rule. Accents include stone sculpture, the sound of water gently trickling from a

C REATING THE ULTIMATE OUTDOOR OASIS

water feature or singing from a simple wind chime. Both break your bonds to the world and let you escape into your oasis and relax. If possible, an Asian oasis may have a hidden feature that is not readily seen upon first entering the space. This is a feature that you discover as you explore and one that is ideal for meditation, to read the Sunday paper on or near, or simply to enjoy while having a glass of wine.

PERFECT POOLSIDEFor your poolside-friendly oasis, consider the addition of market lights away from the water and suspended overhead. These small light bulbs – spaced on a wire every 12” or so – are available with shades in a multitude of styles that are compatible with any theme. This soft lighting creates a relaxing and inviting atmosphere, while candles in large scale and lanterns around the pool further help to define the pool and add light and interest. The most important thing for your oasis is to make the time to allow yourself to relax and enjoy your newly created oasis sanctuary!

LIVING IN FLORIDA OFFERS more than just sunshine and miles of glorious beaches. Our own backyards can provide the same luxurious setting as a relaxing vacation with nothing more than a fresh perspective on our outdoor spaces. Going from sandy soil or struggling grassy areas to a private oasis can be a challenge in some of the best scenarios, but what if you are faced with limited yard space? In this featured project, the homeowners experienced

not only the dilemma of restricted yard space, but one that did not offer the typical proportions of most yards. With a phone call to the experts at A&R Landscaping and Lighting and Mad River Pools, the vision of a private, personal outdoor retreat became a reality for this homeowner. With a side yard resembling three sizes of rectangular spaces, the homeowner wanted to maximize use of the space and include

features such as a secured area for the dogs to enjoy, sitting area, a shaded pergola area, as well as a relaxing in-ground spa and grilling area. Not only did the yard face an alleyway drive at one end, it sat adjacent to a two-story home where the window view of the neighbors eliminated the privacy preferred for this space. Through the professional collaboration and years of experience from Andy Robinson of A&R Landscaping and Michael Ramée of Mad River Pools, the homeowner’s space was transformed into the exceptional outdoor renovation we see here. Because the yard was naturally comprised of three uniquely sized sections, Andy and Michael decided to maintain those sections as separate “rooms”. The largest section was dedicated to the spa, within property line and electrical panel setbacks. The advantage to this option was pump placement – this particular location allowed the spa equipment to be placed inside the adjacent garage, thus eliminating pump noise in the outside space. The spa selected was an acrylic fiberglass spa with a charcoal colored bull-nose coping, offering an extremely smooth interior seating experience. Raising the spa 18” off the ground and incorporating an earth tone stone veneer provided additional seating and easy access to the spa in the tight space. The narrowest segment of the yard worked perfectly for a grilling nook and the mid-sized section was transformed to fulfill private seating under the new cedar pergola, thus obscuring the neighbor’s view. Aluminum picket fencing further enhanced the

level of privacy (without the claustrophobic feeling a solid wood fence would create in such a small area) and provided a secure play area for the homeowner’s pets. A variety of ground and container plants, trellised vines, grasses, palms and trees created privacy and an inviting oasis aura. Belgard® cobblestone pavers were used for the patio, creating a classic look and texture that complement the new cedar pergola and the cooling, waterproof fan. The combination of textures, colors, materials and finishes worked seamlessly to create architectural dimension and minimize space wastage in this challenging yard space. From design to final completion, A&R Landscaping and Mad River Pools gave this homeowner a one-stop shopping experience. Better known as “The Landscape Renovator”, Andy Robinson has over 25 years of landscape architecture and design experience. His dedication to the art of landscaping runs deeper than the concept of merely putting plants in the ground – it’s a culmination of all facets of the beauty of the outdoors. When your idea involves earth, plants, water or water features, shade, lighting or enclosures, Andy’s company, A&R Landscaping and Lighting, provides landscapes and their owners with everything from simple advice to complete outdoor makeovers. Hardscape services include patios, walks, driveways, stone and retaining walls, and decks, to name just a few. A&R’s landscaping services include the full

spectrum of contouring/grading, sod, plant life and irrigation, but include water features such as fountains, waterfalls and ponds. Summer kitchens, fireplaces and fire pits, arbors/pergolas, screened enclosures and sun rooms are a few other of the myriad of services offered at A&R. www.TheLandscapeRenovator.net provides a full list of A&R’s services, a photo gallery of many completed projects, an extensive plant and video library, as well as the opportunity to “Ask the Landscaper” for advice. When Andy and Michael first encountered one another’s work, it quickly became a professional union of high quality standards and exceptional service practices. This union has resulted in numerous projects completed by the two experts and their companies. With Andy’s 25 year landscaping background and Michael’s 34 years in the pool and spa industry, any outdoor oasis becomes a smoothly executed, precise and top quality project. Michael Ramée began his career in pool construction in 1973. After dedicating 17 years to designing and installing swimming pools and spas for other businesses in Northern New Jersey, Michael opened the doors to Mad River Pool Construction in 1990. It was during the summer of 1998 that Michael relocated his company to the Sunshine State. Since then, Mad River Pool Construction has been providing Central Florida with in-ground gunite-fiberglass and polymer/concrete pools. Michael’s expertise has been requested for projects all over the world as well as two “Extreme Home Makeover”

AHH… SPRING. It’s a wonderful time of year to appreciate Mother Nature as she bounces back from a hard, cold winter. It’s the season for fresh breezes, warmer temperatures, spring breaks and spring cleaning! After a long winter hibernation, many of us may feel the need to tidy up our home. Spring is a great time to go green while you refresh, renew and reorganize! Here are a few tips on green cleaning. First, try to use fewer harsh chemicals by whipping up just the right product with everyday substances you already have in your home. According to Annie Bond, the author of Green & Clean, you can combine baking soda and liquid detergent for the perfect oven cleaner or mix a little olive oil, vinegar and lemon juice for a fine furniture polish. Also try to cut back on the excessive use of paper towels. Reduce your waste by using reusable cloths, towels and sponges. Finally, trade in your disposable mop and sweeper for a reusable one. Next, take care of those tedious jobs you only do once a year − your refrigerator for example. You may not realize just how much you can do to improve the efficiency of kitchen appliances like your fridge. Try covering your food, keeping your coils clean, storing food at the correct temperature, keeping a good seal on the door and moving the fridge away from direct sunlight.

Now it’s time to clean up the clutter. Get rid of any unnecessary items or clothing that may be crowding your home. As a general rule, if you haven’t worn it or used in the last year then you don’t need it. But don’t be quick to throw it out! There are a number of more eco-friendly alternatives. You can always donate, recycle or sell some of those items that are still in good, working condition. It’s a great way to spread the green around. Your next step after sorting the items you no longer need from those that you would like to keep, is storing your items in an organized and sustainable way. Shy away from those tempting plastic containers, and instead look for dressers, chests, storage units and shelves made of Bamboo or reclaimed/recycled timber. These stylish pieces make a fashion statement and express your care for our environment. Consider adding even more organization to your life by going paperless. This will reduce the amount of paper clutter you accumulate in the house. Simply request that you receive your bills and other communications online. Adopt these practices now, and you’ll have less work to do this time next year. It’s all about having a fresh outlook on life and this is a fantastic way to start off on the right foot.

GRILLING HAS LONG BEEN AN EXALTED American pastime. People are taking greater joy in preparing exceptional food at home and an outdoor kitchen has become the ideal place to do this. Cooking outdoors is more fun and food cooked on a grill, well, simply tastes better! Even just eating food outdoors is more relaxing. We’re spending more time in our kitchens and outdoor kitchens have become a natural extension of the trend toward home entertaining. It’s no secret that excitement about backyard living has been rising like the mercury on a hot summer day. As today’s affluent homeowners continue to spend more time, energy and money on creating their ideal home environment, they are increasingly eager to turn up the heat on outdoor entertaining. You may not realize that having a BBQ doesn’t mean you can’t be green. We would like to offer you a few ways to get things cooking, without causing any undue stress on the environment. There was a time when a good part of the American dream was to own a home with a backyard. Dad would barbecue charcoal-grilled hot dogs and hamburgers from Memorial Day until Labor Day while mom ran in and out of her kitchen preparing the rest of the supper. Enter the 21st century and the once-humble barbecue is evolving into what may be one of the next significant home trends—the outdoor kitchen. It’s not your father’s grill anymore. Your first step towards a greener BBQ is to use gas, propane or electric grills. No, they

aren’t perfect; but they do burn more efficiently and cleaner than charcoal or wood. If you still can’t shy away from using charcoal, make sure you burn natural lumps, not briquettes; and try to use only what you need. From classic built-in outdoor grills to fantasy island units jam-packed with amenities such as wine coolers, pizza ovens and lobster boilers, the sky is the limit with today’s outdoor kitchens. Open-air kitchens provide highly functioning spaces for cooking while enjoying the best the great outdoors has to offer. According to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA)—yes, there really is such a thing—the backyard has blossomed into a fully-furnished outdoor living space designed as an extension of a home’s interior. In a recent analysis of 2002 Barbecue Shipments, HPBA findings indicate that this lifestyle shift is partially supported by the growing investments in home remodeling with an emphasis on outdoor amenities. In addition, the study found that currently 70 percent of all gas grill owners cook outdoors year-round. To accommodate them, an increasing number of manufacturers are offering high-quality, all-weather outdoor cooking appliances and heaters to enable year-round use. Within well-planned designs, focus is placed on both the cooking facility and the dining area. Outdoor kitchens take all of the fun of a rustic barbeque and elevates it to a more comfortable and functional plane. Of course, the grill is the focal point of any open-air kitchen. High end gas grills are the norm, but some

kitchens make room for more than just one type of grill. Other cooking equipment, i.e., top-grade ovens like Vikings, wood-burning stoves, and rotisseries, also make excellent additions. A built-in counter unit with grill, sink, warming oven and stone work surfaces can be ordered through a specialty retailer for $3,800-$5,500 depending upon the quality of grill purchased and the type of work surfaces ordered. Of course, the conscientious homeowner will also pay mind to the area where diners will be seated. After all, comfortable entertaining is an important aspect of the outdoor dining experience. Outdoor furniture sets can range anywhere from $300 for resin wicker to $5,000 for oiled teak. Make sure mosquitoes don’t drive your guests away. Look out for what could be prime mosquito breeding grounds in your backyard — clean out rain gutters, check other spots with standing water and mow your grass. This will keep the pests at bay. For maximum utility, this area should be shielded from the elements. That way, the state of the art entertainment system

(including a plasma TV and surround sound) will be protected. For those cooler winter evenings, a fireplace can take the edge off a windy or chilly evening. Here are a few of the features to be seeing this year in outdoor kitchens:• Separate wine chillers for whites versus reds, each maintaining the right temperatures.• Freezers and freezer drawers: with the right units, ice cream can be served from the outdoor kitchen.• Keg tappers serving multiple kinds of beer.• Pizza ovens are another trend expected to make strong strides in even the most modest outdoor kitchens.• Wok burners are broadening the types of outdoor cooking, as are lobster and crab boilers!• Specialized storage and a broader variety of outdoor kitchen cabinets. With so many options available, it’s too bad that contractors can’t offer clients the option of a few more days off to enjoy their outdoor kitchens!

While green technology for outdoor kitchens is not something we should expect in heavy abundance anytime soon, here are some simple pointers on how to party green in your outdoor kitchen!

1. Use reusable or biodegradable dishware and utensils. Certain stores even offer dishware in a disposable bamboo material. These and other biodegradable products break down much easier than that of either plastic or Styrofoam.2. Offer large quantities of beverages, instead of individual containers. Using a large jug or several pitchers will significantly lower the amount of individual serving cans or bottles you’ll have to dispose of afterwards.3. If you opt for large drink containers or pitchers, you will need cups or glasses to drink from. In this case, you should try to get everyone to write their name on a cup, or mark their glass, so that they will try to use only one.4. If you decide to serve alcoholic beverages, you will inevitably have a number of bottles and cans leftover. Place a recycle bin or two near the garbage so your guests can help you make sure they get disposed of correctly.5. Get locally grown fruits and vegetables. While they may not be organic, they are local. This means they haven’t traveled very far to get to you, making them fresher and tastier too!6. Although many environmentalists will tell you that it is far ‘greener’ to be vegetarian, we know that the BBQ is all about the meat. So don’t skimp here. Spend the extra money for organic, sustainable wieners and hamburgers. Your pallet might even thank you.7. Encourage your guests to carpool, walk or bike over to the BBQ. While in some areas this may be more plausible than others, it’s still a great way to minimize your overall impact.8. Don’t overlook the little things. Using an e-vite instead of paper invitations, and opting for reusable cloth napkins or homemade decorations will result in a highly successful green BBQ.

ONE: Always recycle. A big mistake homeowner’s sometimes make in taking on yard projects is forgetting to recycle. Landscaping jobs can produce a lot more waste than one might think. Instead of just tossing out those clippings, branches and old plants, turn it all into mulch by renting a shredder and putting it back into the yard. This homemade mulch can actually make excellent fertilizer. If you’re not in favor of this idea, you can also look for recycled mulch at your local home improvement store.

TWO: Plant the right things in the right places. An officially classified “green home” is graded not only by what’s inside, but also what’s outside and where it is placed. A strategically planned landscape design can lower your home’s energy and water usage. Large trees, for instance, can provide shade in places where you don’t want the sun heating up your home. You should also try to group plants with similar water needs together to increase efficiency. Finally, the experts say most lawns usually only need one inch of water per week.

Going Green from the Outside in... HAVING A SUSTAINABLE HOME DOESN’T JUST MEAN doing all the right things on the inside − it also means you have to look outside. Your landscaping choices need to be as environmentally conscience as the choices you make on the interior of your home. So as you start to enjoy (or attempt to bear) the warmer weather in your outdoor space, here are a few things to consider. Green landscaping is a practice that emphasizes the conscious selection of appropriate plants, water conservation and the use of fewer resources to blend the landscape into the natural world. The following tips will help you get there.

Going Green from the Outside in... THREE: You may not be aware that introducing certain plant species into a new or foreign area can have divesting effects on the local wildlife and surrounding plant life. The Nature Conservancy states that invasive non-native plants are a huge threat to wildlife habitats in Florida, second only to development. With more consumers trying to become more conscious of the impact they’re having on our environment, there has been a surge in the understanding of native vs. invasive plants. Before you plan your garden or install new landscaping, refer to the Florida Native Plant Society (www.FNPS.org) for a list of natives; or check out American Beauties’ (www.ABNativeplants.com) line of native plants.

FOUR: Use sustainable materials. Experts use the term hardscape to define the stonework portion of a landscaping project, typically including paths, patios and retaining walls. With lumber costs increasing and forest land in short supply, recycled materials provide both environmentally-friendly and economically-favorable options for hardscapes. For instance, recycled plastic bender board never rots, is less costly than redwood and is faster to install for decks and landscape edging. Broken concrete or recycled bricks are another option for paths or walls. These products are widely available and are sometimes free.

FIVE: Don’t overlook exterior lighting. Your landscape and outdoor space can be greatly impacted by your choice of lighting. You should always imagine what the space will look like during the day and at night. Solar lights are the perfect environmentally-friendly option for outdoor lighting. They are easy to install (no wires or electricity), the sun heats and “charges” them all day, and at night they give off a nice soft glow. Solar lights come in a variety of styles, colors, materials and sizes.

SIX: The final step towards achieving an environmentally-sound garden or landscape is to go organic. Organics eliminate the threat of harmful chemicals and toxins that can wash into your groundwater. To learn more about organic fertilizers, natural pesticides and more, visit the OrganicGardeningGuru.com. You can also obtain peat-free organic soil from most home-improvement retailers and local nurseries.

Keep in mind that your landscaping choices will not only impact you, but will affect our environment for generations to come. Be wise, be conscious and be green!

Elegant Landscape Designs is the residential division of West Orange Nurseries, Inc., a 32 year old corporation out of Winter Garden. Although the Elegant brand and logo were created in 2009, the experience and level of quality are rooted in a foundation of excellence. WON was started in 1978 as a grower, wholesaler and installer of 4” annual flowers for clients such as Walt Disney World, Ritz Carlton and commercial maintenance companies. Operations were then expanded into the landscape construction segment in 1980 with projects throughout the United States and Caribbean. This involved developing a full-service custom home division for builders such as Akers Custom Homes, Jones Clayton Construction and J. Richard Watson Construction Company. General Contractors and corporate clients such as Outback Steakhouse, Darden Restaurants and Carrabba’s Italian Grill are also references for ELD’s commitment to quality, customer service and long lasting relationships that span over 30 years in the landscape industry. In this featured project the homeowners wanted a “low maintenance outdoor area based on a Southwest design that was conducive to entertaining with a water feature focal point.” Mr. and Mrs. Rawls gave ELD’s design staff a blank canvas with the freedom to be creative. After

several visits to recently completed projects throughout the Windermere area a theme was narrowed down and a multiple of renderings submitted. Mr. Lee Rawls views the experience as, “surrounding yourself with the best people, working closely with them to develop a level of trust that allows the design to evolve through the process and ultimately facilitate your vision. At the end of the day, a great design is worthless if you don’t have the right contractor to execute the plan.” ELD offers the highest level of quality and service to anyone looking to enhance their outdoor living space with plants and trees, outdoor kitchens and BBQ’s, and water features such as fountains and ponds. Hardscape design and installation with pavers, travertine, Cobble Systems ™, privacy walls, fireplaces and custom concrete features are also available through ELD, as well as irrigation design, installation and service, and landscape lighting. Elegant Landscape Designs truly is your one-stop destination for outdoor elegance!

outdoor kitchens~ Outdoor Kitchen Creations

S H O W C A S E

Cooking outdoors is a great American pastime. In today’s economy there are even more reasons to consider adding an outdoor kitchen to your existing home. When done right, outdoor kitchens add a beauty and elegance that turn your patio into your own personal resort; a living space that can virtually change your lifestyle. Instead of spending money traveling or dining out, imagine the joy of entertaining your family and friends at home with you as “The Grill Master”.Outdoor Kitchen Creations helps bring out the chef in you by incorporating top of the line components in their outdoor kitchens. The limits on components and design are set only by your imagination and budget. In every outdoor kitchen, OKC utilizes a patented poured-in-place concrete design for its cabinets that results in a truly customized, seamless extension of your home. Concrete cabinets are built to last as long as your home; without the warping, rusting or deteriorating you may find with metal stud/backer board or wood cabinets. In fact, poured-in-place concrete is so durable, OKC is able to offer a LIFETIME WARRANTY on their cabinets! If you even consider using another company, ask them if they are willing to guarantee their cabinets for a lifetime. A good analogy for anyone considering an outdoor kitchen is to compare it to choosing a pool for your home.

To add value to your home, an in ground gunite pool provides a much higher return on investment than an above ground pool. The same holds true for outdoor kitchens. OKC’s outdoor kitchens are constructed of poured-in-place concrete; a permanent, rock solid structure that will increase the overall value and resale attractiveness of your home. Because owner Bill Morris is just as much an artist as a General Contractor, he is in high demand. One look at the testimonials on their website will tell you Mr. Morris and his staff are a solid choice when choosing a contractor. Although there may be other companies that sell outdoor kitchens, OKC is truly unique in their design, construction methods, warranty, and commitment to exceed their customers’ expectations. For contact information, more project photos, testimonials and to view all of their licensing and insurance information, visit OKC on the web at www.outdoorkitchencreations.com.

Francia Fusik’s dedication to not only fulfilling her client’s needs, but going above and beyond to create the inviting space in this showcase has earned her this client’s gratitude and trust….and more importantly, referrals to all of his friends! As owner of All in One Decorating Solutions, Francia and her staff listen to client needs – taking into consideration tastes and lifestyle – and then make the experience personal by recognizing that they are decorating for their clients not themselves; because “At the end of the day,” Fancia says, “It is our client living in the space, not our decorators.” In this showcase All in One’s client had a vision he wanted actualized in his outdoor retreat. The patio needed to be transformed into a sanctuary that would feel equally as comfortable when he was enjoying a cup of coffee with the New York Times or conducting a business meeting from his home. Specifically, the client desired all the comforts and tranquility of his beautifully decorated home to seamlessly flow into the outdoor area. All in One’s main objective was to maximize the small space and transform the client’s wishes into the perfect haven. “All in One Decorating Solutions’ philosophy,” says Francia “is interior decor that will create a dream home by fulfilling all the needs and desires of our clients.”

The initial step in this transformation was the careful selection of the perfect furniture pieces that would fulfill both the demands for comfortable reading and ample seating for entertaining or casual dinner. Next, All in One enhanced this inviting refuge by enveloping the homeowner’s desires with the addition of carefully selected wall art, shutters for the French doors, a complementary area rug, as well as large, welcoming throw pillows – this attention to detail resulted in the seamless transition of indoor-to-outdoor ambiance. All in One Decorating Solutions specializes in color concept and furniture floor planning. Francia’s company services both residential and commercial clients with a focus on interior decorating, custom window treatments, lighting selection, accessories, redecorating and consultations. The art of listening has earned Francia numerous clients over the years and her skills as a decorator have resulted in numerous client referrals – the highest accolade of all. “We are living behind our signature that will stand in our clients memories for a long time ... When it comes to high quality concrete pavers, look no further than Flagstone Pavers – outperforming the industry specifications for compressive strength and absorption properties for pavers is just one of the many reasons why Flagstone Pavers is the best. Flagstone’s loyal customer base is a testament to their continued commitment to product and service excellence. Flagstone offers one of the largest selections of high quality pavers, coping and turf block products in Florida. Over the past decade, Flagstone has perfected the technical art of formulating and blending colors. This system results in the most vibrant color blends offered today and distinguishes Flagstone as the leading paver manufacturer in Florida. Combine the color options with the broad selection of unique shapes and sizes of pavers available through Flagstone and it’s easy to see why Flagstone’s products are chosen more often than any other brand. For the discerning customer, the visual, tactile and quality difference of Flagstone products is second to none. Substandard paver products not only look bad (lack color and surface texture quality) but also lack the density required of a true paver, often resulting in cracking, crumbling, infiltration of mold and premature surface wear. Flagstone’s “Get Educated” page on their website is an excellent way to better understand the truth about pavers and why selecting a quality product is so important. Contact Flagstone Pavers today to see how you can transform your hardscape with custom pavers designed to last. After all, not all pavers are created equal!

Founded in 2002 by Dante M. Corrente - owner, artist, rock sculptor - Artificial Environments, Inc. has focused on bringing the tropical environments found mostly in theme parks, resorts, and casinos into the residential community. Dante’s pioneering efforts to the art of outdoor living have resulted in many amazing and unique lagoon-style pools, custom carved concrete decks, custom rocks and waterfalls, as well as outdoor summer kitchens. The idea is to transform your blasé outdoor area into an upscale habitat – one that enhances your lifestyle by commanding your need to make the time to fully enjoy it. As a certified pool contractor, Artificial Environments is able to build you the pool of your dreams or renovate your older pool into a relaxing, tropical oasis. Dreaming of a lagoon-style pool and barbeques with friends, the homeowners of this featured project sought the expertise of Artificial Environments, Inc to transform their existing pool into an oasis. Dante met with the homeowners and redesigned the pool and backyard area to represent a tropical oasis. The design included custom carved rockwork, waterfalls, a summer kitchen and fire pit. The addition of custom carved-rock decking and carved-rock coping completely eliminated the need for traditional tile, thereby solidifying the concept of a natural tropical oasis. Because the homeowners wanted to extend their outdoor enjoyment into the evenings, ambient fiber optic lighting was incorporated into the design. Like all of Artificial Environments’ projects, Dante and his team of talented artists designed and masterfully created this innovative environment, capturing the type of beauty that only nature can rival.

WITH EVERY PURCHASE FOR YOUR HOME YOU SHOULD CONSIDER the questions of design, budget and lifestyle. Your outdoor furniture is no exception. You want it to not only stand up to the elements of time, weather and your family’s activities but also reflect your personal style. Instead of rushing out on the next sunny Saturday to grab a new patio set, take time to consider the following. What purpose will your outdoor furniture serve? Will you be entertaining guests outside for dinner or lounging in the sun after a plunge in the pool? Are you looking for comfort or utility? How much space do you have? That gorgeous sectional may look divine in the store display, but if it crowds your backyard or doesn’t meet your demand for function, you will be greatly disappointed. Will you be making any renovations to your home’s exterior soon? The addition of a deck, pool or new exterior paint will dramatically change your outdoor furniture choices. Make sure all elements are in harmony and there is a plan in place. This is a great time to employ a design board (discussed in the April/May issue). What is your project budget? While inexpensive patio furniture is easily found, keep in mind you may need to replace it in a short period of time. The smarter choice is to purchase the best quality your budget allows. Remember, this furniture will add to the comfort of

your loved ones and will be an element in your family photos for years to come. What material makes the most sense for your lifestyle? You have three basic options when it comes to outdoor furniture: wood, synthetics and metal. Some materials require more maintenance than others. If you already have a hectic schedule, you will want furniture that you can simply wash off with a hose. If you don’t mind the annual weatherproofing and associated chores, you may lean towards another material. Finally, how much protection from the elements do you need? In Florida this consideration is extremely important. It takes less than 30 minutes of direct sun exposure to sustain a painful sunburn. As this year’s Memorial Day weekend demonstrated, a rain storm can roll in quite unexpectedly. Consider incorporating an umbrella or gazebo into your furniture design. These accessories are not only functional; they can add an accent color or a unique architectural design to your backyard oasis. Remember, selecting outdoor furniture should be fun. By adding furnishings of quality, beauty and function to your outdoor living area, you will enjoy your selections for years to come!

THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE reclining in a lounger and enjoying your patio when the weather allows it. Smetimes even the most sun-loving among us need to catch some shade when it gets too hot to bear, so this needs to be kept in mind when you are designing and creating your outdoor oasis. Strive for ultimate shade coverage. When choosing a shade structure, it is important to remember the size of the area you wish to cover and the position of a person or the equipment in relation to the edge of the shade structure. This will impact the amount of ultraviolet radiation received. Although it is not always possible to achieve optimal shade, try to envision the ultimate and aim to meet all your needs. Natural Shade – Trees. Keep in mind adequate shade is usually only achieved when a plant reaches its maturity - which may take up to 10 years! Careful planning at the planting stage is required especially with respect to species and location. The most effective trees have broad canopies, dense foliage and sufficient clearance beneath the canopy to allow access. Remember, the taller the tree, the less the shade. Select carefully to ensure the trees are appropriate for the soil type

and the Central Florida climate. Choose trees that are less likely to shed branches...especially during summer storms. Consider planting trees in groups for optimal coverage. Another possibility is to use a combination of hanging baskets to form a wall display that also provides some shade once the flowers are in full bloom. This won’t provide as much consistent shade, but it can help to improve the usability of certain areas as the sun makes its pass. Solid Roof vs. Fabric Roof. Solid roofs typically cost 50-60 percent more than fabric roofs. They will have a longer life span than their fabric alternatives and will provide more protection from the elements. Current options include retractable shutters and roofs as well as the new emerging trend – static louvres. Fabric roofs are much easier to maintain. The breathable fabric prevents mold, mildew and termites. In addition, fabric roofs can be less costly to replace than solid roofs. A more permanent solution would be to install an awning or canopy which would be attached directly to your house. The more advanced options are retractable, offering you the most versatility without being an eyesore when not in use. You will

also have a choice of natural shades and colors that can be chosen to fit in with the color of your garden furniture. Water-Resistant vs. Waterproof. If you do decide to go with a fabric covering, you can choose between water-resistant and waterproof materials. Consider the application. Is waterproof truly required? While not waterproof, breathable fabric covers provide up to 80 percent water resistance and complete hail protection. Look for the following features in coated fabrics: tight weave, coating to resist mildew and UV protection (up to 99%). A major drawback to both waterproof and water-resistant fabrics alike are that they trap in the heat. If water resistance is not an issue, breathable shade cloth may be the perfect option. It allows some light, air and water through, and usually has a long lifespan of up to 15 years. Shade cloth has varying degrees of UVR protection, most falling below 94 percent. The fabric allows the flow of air and the escape of heat, creating a cooling effect. Another less well known way of creating a shady patio is by purchasing a sunshade sail. This is basically a big piece of material (usually triangular or rectangular) attached to whatever

points you wish by cord and O-rings. This can be one or two points on your house, a tree branch or a fence. In this sense they are more versatile than an awning, as they can be used on a patio area or in the middle of a garden, so long as you have places to string them up from By using a combination of trees and man-made shade structures you can achieve the ultimate sun protection! Quick, aesthetically pleasing shade that controls the amount of sun exposure – less in the summer, more in the winter Positioning. The amount of protection offered by a shade structure varies with the angle of the sun. The casted shade may not always be directly beneath the shade structure. A well-designed and correctly positioned shade structure casts shade where and when it is most needed - at the right time of day and at the right time of year. Incorrect positioning of shade structures and trees can result in unexpected shadows that provide little shelter from the sun. However much you like to soak up the sun, it’s important that you don’t overdo it, and by using a combination of the methods above, you will always have a shady area to retreat to!

WHEN CREATING AN OUTDOOR OASIS, one must also think about design and quality, the amount of space you have, as well as the look and feel desired. Just as thematic design renovations can enlighten and enrich the interior and structural elements of your home, so too can they bring extra “flavor” to the surroundings of your outdoor environment. With the advice of local landscape expert, Andy Robinson of AskTheLandscaper.com, we offer you three popular thematic suggestions and the perfect plant selections to pull them off!

1) JUNGLE - The jungle theme makes use of tropical foliage to recapture the essence of a forgotten Florida past where a lush green eco-system thrived and natural lagoons and waterfalls flowed in abundance:

A) Alphonse Karr Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex ‘Alphonse Karr’), considered the most attractive bamboo; forms dense clumps (18’ – 22’ in height) of bright yellow culms with irregular, vertical, green stripes. New shoots are often tinted pink or red when exposed to high sunlight. B) Selloum philodendron (Philodendron selloum) is a profound shrub in our Floridian climate; it’s “elephant ears” grow in a spiral formation from what can develop into a 3 – 4’ long tree-like trunk and have a glorious spread of 5 – 10’ with medium green leaves growing to 3’ long. C) Pineapple Guava (Acca sellowiana) is a multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with silvery green foliage that can be trained to a small tree with a single trunk or pruned to form a dense hedge or screen usually 8’ – 10’. The egg-shaped leaves are 2” – 3” and the unusual flowers are edible and very attractive. D) Variegated Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet ‘variegata’) grows upright to 5’ – 6’ with leaves about 2’ long and 6” across and variegated with irregular stripes of green and yellow. The flowers are white, tipped in pink, and borne in long pendant arches.E) White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) is a 14’ – 20’ clumping plant with awesome large leaf texture; it grows upright so it can fit into some tight spaces! Their large banana-shaped leaves add a rich jungle look.

2) TROPICAL – If you love the look of native tropical Florida and space for your outdoor oasis is a bit limited, you can still make this statement using a smaller scale of colorful and intriguing tropical plants!

F) Orange Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) is the most desired tropical flower. The grey-green banana-like leaves grow about 3’ – 5’ in height and the flowers stand above the foliage at the tips of long stalks. The fascinating blooms consist of three brilliant orange sepals and three bright blue petals and resemble the appearance of a birds head. G) Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica) is actually not a bamboo at all, but the foliage of this semi-evergreen shrub has a lacy appearance and upright form (4’ – 8’) that mimics bamboo, especially when used in clusters. In spring, there are large panicles of small white flowers at the end of stems, followed by green berries which ripen to bright red. H) Neo Bromeliads (Neoregelia) are renowned for their kaleidoscope colors and the even, concentric leaf form of the plants themselves. This exotic ground cover has a multitude of varieties that present a riot of color. In a landscape arrangement, groups of three or five with contrasting colors can be grown to complement each other. I) Variegated Schefflera (Schefflera arboricola ‘Trinette’) trumpets a lush tropical look with its great green and yellow foliage. Soft branching and intricate nature brings depth to its 3’ – 4’ clumping shape and 3’ – 6’ height. J) Pygmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii) is considered one of the best small palms. This miniature feather palm has a slender truck and will only reach 10’ – 12’ in height. Its fruit are small, about a ½ inch long, and range from dark purple to brown/black when fully ripe.

3) ASIAN – Think Zen… simplistic amount of natural accent and texture designed to nurture the soul. Rock accent, water, paths, bridges, bamboo and statues are also elements to consider in addition to the following plants!

K) Dwarf Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus ‘Nanus”) has dark green grass-like foliage that looks like moss when used in clumps. It’s 2” – 4” stature with violet flowers on short stalks makes it an excellent groundcover in rock gardens. L) Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora) is a striking border fern whose emerging fronds are pink or copper red, especially in early spring, and mature to light green. The fronds, reaching up to 2’ in length, are upright and will lend a lacy-fine texture to the garden.

M) Japanese Boxwood (Buxus microphylla japonica) makes an excellent medium to larger (4’ – 6’) shrub with its lighter green, opal shaped leaves and compact look. Great hedge plant or left unpruned, an interesting corner or entryway accent! N) Torulosa Juniper (Juniperus chinensis ‘Torulosa’) is an irregular upright conifer that has a natural Bonsai look with its twisted stems and artistic shape. The shrub or tree form can reach 15’ – 20’ with a 10’ spread! O) Snake Plant (Sanservieria trifasciata) has stiff 4’ x 2.5” leaves that grow vertically with dark and light gray-green banding. Greenish-white 18” flowers add a softer intricacy to its blade like shape.

THE TOP TEN MUST-HAVE FEATURES IN TODAY’S HOME − according to Paul Cardis, CEO of AVID Ratings Co., which conducts an annual survey of home-buyer preferences.

1. The kitchen reigns supreme. This is still one area of the home where you are always guaranteed a great return on your investment. Buyers are searching for spacious kitchens, with an island.2. Green is the way to go. In today’s economy, buyers know that being eco-conscious will save you more money over time. So they’re specifically looking for energy-efficient appliances, as well as high-efficiency insulation and windows.3. Back to basics. Although luxuries like home theatres and formal dining rooms gained popularity for a while, buyers are now realizing it would more useful to have a home workspace for organization and family planning. Adding a home office or study is more likely to appeal to the majority of buyers.4. Master suites on the main floor. This is especially popular with empty-nesters, but seems to be more appealing across the board. It also explains why buyers no longer seem to care for upstairs laundries. 5. The big outdoors meets the backyard. The outdoor kitchen has certainly caught on, but outdoor rooms are all the rage −

even in cool climates. Everyone is looking for an area with the potential to develop into the ultimate outdoor living space.6. All about the details. Though it may not seem like it could make a big impact, the addition of ceiling fans will add to the overall appeal of your home. It just goes to show that you can’t overlook the little things.7. Soak it up. Master suite whirlpool tubs have had their day. Now it’s time for the shower to shine. Buyers are seeking luxury in the master bath, so spare no expense. Survey says: oversized showers with built-in seating will send your home straight to the winner’s circle.8. Natural is the new look. Buyers have spoken! Stucco and vinyl home exteriors receive low marks, while brick and stone quickly move up the ranks.9. Don’t over-develop. Communities that come equipped with swimming pools, a clubhouse, a golf course or other major amenities may seem like the perfect environment. But, in reality, that’s precisely what it’s lacking. Buyers now prefer communities with more of the original environment and greenery still intact.10. An intimate garage for two. Let’s face it − in most cases, the garage ends up being partially used as a storage unit, rarely a place to comfortably park the car. Homebuyers who know this inevitable fate are extremely pleased to find a two-car garage.

Get a SENSATIONAL DECK with a SMALL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

(Continues on page 52)

SO THE POOL IS INSTALLED, THE LANDSCAPE PRISTINELY MANICURED and the ultimate outdoor kitchen is complete. You’re just missing one essential detail. You need the perfect space to settle in and enjoy it all. A deck could be the ideal solution to your outdoor entertaining and enjoyment needs. The addition of a deck improves the value of your home, increases the usefulness of the yard and saves time and money spent on lawn maintenance. Even better, a deck designed with the environment in mind can be appealing, practical and considerably more conscientious. Today, there are several options when it comes to eco-friendly decking materials. We will explore three popular choices to discover what they’re made of, how they are maintained and what makes them green.WOOD It’s the original deck material. Both aesthetically and structurally strong, it is a traditional pleaser that breaks down into natural components. Let’s look at a few basic types. Hard woods such as redwood, cedar and ipe are more naturally resistant to rot and insect invasion. Softer wood is another alternative but it requires strong chemicals

T h e G r e e n H o m e | GOING GREEN: decking options

and preservatives to ward off rot and insects. Thus reminding us, the fewer chemicals we can use, the better it will be for the environment. Finally, old-growth (or reclaimed) wood is a highly preferred option. It is not readily available, but it can be salvaged from older buildings and restored for shockingly beautiful end results. The Goodwin Heart Pine Company is one well-known supplier of reclaimed wood in Florida. Also check with your local flooring distributors and try scouting your area for old barns, warehouses or buildings. Owners may consider selling you the wooden remains in the heart of preservation. When purchasing wood always remember to shop for the less-traveled, meaning a supply that is harvested locally. Its production and transport will require less energy and has a lower carbon count. Wood lumber can also be purchased with the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified stamp of approval to guarantee it is not taken from intact or protected forests. So what are the downsides? Wood can easily crack and split during installation and over its lifetime. Chemicals such as stains are normally necessary for obtaining the desired color. In addition, its annual maintenance requires chemicals to reduce mildew, rot and warping.

COMPOSITES This is a mixture of wood, plastic and other materials such as wax and fiberglass. They can be made differently, so you have to make sure that what you get is crafted from recycled or virgin plastic without harmful chemicals. ChoiceDek®, Geo Deck™ and Trex® are just a few prime examples of successful and environmentally responsible composite deck brands. Composites are great for custom and intricate designs because they can be purchased in almost any desired shade and they easily conform to create curves and edging. With a life-span of at least 20 to 25 years, it’s guaranteed to last longer than wood. Composites also tend to be easier to install and they’re incredibly low maintenance. Due to its impervious structure, a composite deck does not require the harsh chemicals or preservatives that wood needs to shield itself from moisture, insects or sunlight. Because composites are usually made up of recycled materials, it is a great way to give products destined for the landfills a chance at a second life. The downside here is that once it has reached the end of its extended life, the materials cannot be recycled again. Eco-Extra: Trex® alone keeps some 300,000 tons of plastic and wood scrap out of landfills every year and seven out of 10 recycled plastic grocery bags in the U.S. end up at Trex®, where they are turned into a composite material.PLASTICS Plastic lumber is made of 100-percent recycled PET (polyethylene

terephthalate), HDPE (high density polyethylene) or LDPE (low density polyethylene). These plastic feed stocks are derived from such raw materials as post-consumer milk jugs, grocery bags, plastic wrap, bubble wrap, detergent bottles, water bottles and other plastic commodities that can be saved from the nation’s ever-increasing landfills. This completely impervious material will not require any chemicals or preservatives to be maintained and it can easily be cleaned with a garden hose. Plastic lumber is also fairly safe, as it is difficult to ignite and will typically self extinguish. Its high initial cost, when weighed against the money saved from averted long-term maintenance and replacement costs, is comparable to wood. The disappointments? Plastics can sometimes contain traces of wood and other materials that weaken its structure making it more susceptible to warping. when its impressive life span comes to an end, as with composites, plastic materials like this are not eligible for re-recycling. FROSTBITTEN?.....Spring is here

WE ARE CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING THE BEGINNING of a new thought pattern when it comes to energy consumption. As fuel prices fluctuate higher and demand is increasing our reliance and dependency on fossil fuels, we are all realizing the price we end up paying can reach beyond our ability control it. When the Federal and local authorities start offering new incentives towards alternative forms of energy production, the incentives start out in our favor. The reason is because it takes an enormous thought process to change from the status quo. In other words, old habits die hard. Those that recognize that change can be beneficial will reap the early rewards. When enough people benefit earlier in the process, others begin to realize those benefits are worth the change. Always be diligent and discerning when choosing a contractor as many start-up companies are entering this field with little or no experience. Make sure to ask your contractor about deadlines in claiming rebates! So what’s a great and affordable way to jump on the solar wagon? Make your next water heater a solar water heater! Through June of 2010 rebates plus other incentives pay for half of the system’s cost. For a family of 3 it will pay for itself in the amount of money you already spend on that portion of your electric bill……and that’s at today’s rates. Water heater energy costs are second place to heat-ing and cooling, just to give you an idea of how much of your energy bill goes to the task of heating water! With a useful life of over 30 years, a solar water heater will save thousands of dollars, just by using the sun as an energy source. That’s what makes it the most popular choice among homeowners in the Sunshine State. We are in a favorable period where lower prices and State rebates and Federal incentives are allowing a better than expected return on investment. Solar Electric systems have a useful life of over 30 years, with a guarantee of an 85 percent power output after 20 years, thus paying for itself several times over

THE GRAND: SAN ALFONSO DEL MAR RESORT in Algarrobo, Chile Completed in December of 2006 after almost a decade of research and planning, Fernando Fischmann – a Chilean real estate developer and biochemist – accomplished his dream of creating a safe, oceanfront place to enjoy water sport activities and swimming. The Pacific Ocean served as both the inspiration and the reason for this pool; though beautiful and, well, enormous, the waters of the Pacific on Chile’s coast are cold, unclean, and rather dangerous for people to enjoy. Resting at an impressive 3,324 feet in length and occupying a total area of 19.77 acres, Fischmann had to wait for the technology to catch up to his plans. The current saltwater filtration and chlorination system – dubbed ‘pulse oxidation’ – is able to maintain clarity and water quality for a relatively low cost using 10 times less chemicals per gallon than traditional water treatment methods. Kept at a lovely 26°C (about 79°F), the San Alfonso del Mar pool is 9°C (48°F) warmer than the encroaching Pacific, making its enjoyment just as welcoming on cold days!

Take some of it home:• Go infinity. Standing in one end of the San Alfonso del Mar pool would have you squinting to see the other end! An infinity style pool can create a similar illusion by hiding the edge of the pool from your view while swimming.• Go with a saltwater system. We’ve all heard of the toxicity of chlorine (which is why we only use so much per gallon of pool water) and salt presents a new option. While saltwater systems convert salt to chlorine through electrolysis, it is cheaper to buy salt than chlorine and you can eliminate the worry of leaving chlorine tablets lying around!• If you haven’t built your new pool yet, consider ‘sections’, as seen in these photos. While these ‘sections’ at San

Alfonso del Mar are more of a separation of swimming and water sport activity areas, for the pool at home, you can opt out of the ‘slope to the deep end’ and go with a shallow platform area that drops into the deep end!

THE CHIC: THE JOULE HOTEL in Dallas, Texas Welcome to the Joule Hotel in Dallas, Texas, designed by famous architect and designer, Adam D. Tihany. While we could get into all the features and amenities of the hotel, our focus is on the pool! Resting on the roof area of the 10th floor, this rather minimalist pool juts 8 feet over the sidewalk down below! The street-side portion of the pool is faced with glass, giving swimmers (and passersby) a view of what’s ‘in’ and ‘out’!

Take some of it home:• Consider clean lines. The rectangular shape of the Joule’s pool is sleek, modern and simple.• Think about lighting. Special lighting for evening swims can really change the personality of your pool! Lights are available in many different colors so plan and accentuate your pool and light scheme to complement one another!• Underwater pool windows? They’re not just for aquariums anymore! Usually made from thick sheets of acrylic and offered a range of sizes, having a window in your pool can be a reality. If this is a feature you want to incorporate into your new pool design, work with your contractor to decide the best way to let the view in!

THE UNIQUE: CLIFFSIDE POOL AT THE HOTEL DU CAP EDEN-ROC France C’est magnifique! This cliffside pool at the Hotel du Cap in France is simply breathtaking. Formed into the side of a low cliff, the pool overlooks the Cannes Bay and Lérins Islands.

Take some of it home:• Go infinity. Whether or not you are on a lake, an infinity pool like this one is absolutely majestic!• Faux cliff? The Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc’s pool is the perfect blend of nature and modernity, and companies such as Artificial Environments, Inc. can help you merge the appearance of nature vs. man-made into your design

THE QUAINT: SIX SENSES HIDEAWAY IN ZIGHY BAY, Oman Located in Oman, the Six Senses Hideway rests on a beautiful expanse of white sand beaches surrounded by mountains. The private infinity pools at each villa are a testament to “size doesn’t matter!”

Take some of it home:• Think ‘tropical retreat’. Even if you are extremely limited in yard space, the villa hideaways in Zighy Bay show you how to get the tropical delights into small spaces! Privacy fencing combined with rockwork, bamboo covered pergola with luxury seating, and white sand underfoot are easy to work into your landscape.• “To infinity, and beyond!” Buzz Lightyear wasn’t talking about pools when he shouted that line out, but in this case, it

works quite well! Why make a small pool seem even smaller with defined edges? The infinity edge concept used in a small pool like this masks the size quite well!

THE TRIBUTE: HEARST CASTLE’S NEPTUNE POOL Designed by architect Julia Morgan and under construction from 1927-1936, this is the famed Neptune Pool at Hearst Castle in California. Mimicking the great architecture of ancient Rome, the Neptune Pool carries with it a theme: a 395,000 gallon pool with the mythological Roman sea god, Neptune, watching over it!

Take some of it home:• Shape. The shape of the Neptune Pool is rather simple: a

rectangular pool opens into an expansive oval main pool, like a bay opening into the sea. You can opt for one or both shapes, just keep it basic! • It’s all in the details. From the geometric patterns on the pool floor to the columns, statues and temple replica watching over the pool, the combination of choices transports us to a different time. Placing columns, statues on pedestals, potted plants and opting for a patterned pool surface can bring a little Neptune (or Poseidon) to your backyard!

LET’S FACE THE FACTS: making the eco-friendly choice isn’t always easy. It can be extremely tough to compromise with nature, but we can assure you that it’s just within reach – even when it comes to life’s greatest luxuries! In 2008, more than 7 million private swimming pools were scattered across America. Each year, the number goes up and it’s no surprise that Florida tops the charts. Private pools are the perfect way to survive the hot Florida sun and we’re not denying that. However, pools can be a huge drain on our continuously diminishing water supply. Not to mention, the average pool maintenance regimen requires a great deal of energy and a number of harsh chemical products. Though it’s not completely chemical-free, many Floridians have already taken the plunge into a salt water pool. This is one of the newest trends in eco-friendly swimming pools. The salt water has a lower rate of evaporation and this system makes the chlorine naturally, eliminating the need to constantly treat the water with chemicals. Most importantly, you can kiss the burn goodbye – the salt water is softer on the skin and gentler on the eyes. In Florida, most homeowners have also chosen the more environmentally friendly solar-heated swimming pool. Lining your roof with solar heating panels is the optimum way to warm up the pool’s water, save money on heating costs and go easy on the environment.

Here are a few other simple ways to better preserve your pool and the beautiful environment around you.

Install a pool cover. It is said that approximately 70 percent of the pool’s heating cost is caused by evaporation. The cover will prevent rapid evaporation and reduce the amount of necessary cleaning. Keep the equipment well-maintained. A clean, lubricated system will work more efficiently and last longer. Be conservative. A lower water temperature means a smaller carbon footprint and a reduction on your power bill. Install a water-saving pool filter. Like many other green options, it may cost you more up front, but it will save you some greenbacks over time. Shorten the filter’s operating time and use the automatic cleaning sweep. In the winter, filtering up to two hours a day could cut your energy use by 40 to 50 percent, without any major difference in clarity or sanitation. Go one step further. Consider the cutting edge in pool filtering and cleaning systems, such as the 100 percent chemical-free EcoSmarte pool sanitation system. It uses copper ionization and liquid oxidation, along with Filter Glass technology. This advanced system is made of 100 percent post-consumer glass. To learn more visit www.ecosmartepool.com.
