As we await the arrival of a new priest, Fr. Marek will be

the only priest on staff and in town from the 26th of July to

the 16th of August. As such, we are going to suspend

the 5:30 pm weekday Mass and 4:30 pm confessions on

the following dates:

August 1-5

and

August 8-12

The 5:30pm weekday Mass will resume on August 15.

Confessions are available by appointment.

OUR PARISH COMES THROUGH AGAIN

Once again our parish has contributed to the greater good. Millions of refugees deal with hardships throughout the world; those who ended up in Jacksonville will be touched by St. Augustine's. They will be receiving sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, detergent, cleansers, toiletries--even a bicycle--and other items donated by our parishioners. The director of the Refugee Resettlement Program at Jacksonville Catholic Charities was thrilled by the carloads of donations we deliv-ered.

the volunteers in the Clothes Closet, I would like to thank

you for the boxes of shampoo and feminine items. We were

completely out of those items and your contributions really

fulfilled a need.

Acts of kindness in this way are so very much appreciated.

Our homeless visitors feel so much better about themselves

when they have clean hair, and of course, the women really

appreciate the feminine items. Thank you very much for

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The readings for today are about as good as it gets for stewardship. The first reading from Ecclesiastes speaks to the vanity of spending one’s life for the accumulation of wealth. The vanity is not from the work itself, but basically from the fact that we can’t take it with us. In the gospel Jesus warns that one’s life does not consist of possessions. Instead, he tells us to be rich in what matters to God. St. Paul tells us in the second reading to “Think of what is above, not of what is on earth,” and he tells us that greed is idolatry. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, idolatry is “the worship of a physical object as a god.” If you look at our society, I would say that despite our professed Christian faith, we mostly worship money and material things as our god. This can be quite a challenge to us, especially if we have been blessed with talents and good fortune that have enabled us to be well-off. And by the world’s standards, almost everyone in the U.S. is well-off. I will confess that my family is financially secure, and this is an immense personal challenge to me in attempting to do God’s will in my everyday life. Here is how I see it and practice it. We are called to love God with our whole being (the greatest com-mandment) and to love our neighbors as ourselves (the second greatest commandment). How can we measure love? I have been taught that you can measure love by how much you are willing to sacrifice of yourself for the beloved. Thus, we can measure our love of God and his children by how much we are willing to sacrifice of our-selves. Stewardship involves time, talent, and treasure. Ideally, loving God and our brothers and sisters will in-volve us spending some time with them, offering our skills to them, as well as financial/material sacrifice. If we find it too difficult to let go of the fruit of our blessings in following these commandments, then perhaps we should be concerned that material things have become our god and that we are, in fact, idolaters. So what are we to do? I don’t have specific answers. However, in last week’s gospel Jesus assured us that if we asked the Father for the Holy Spirit he would answer our prayer. Let us step back and prayerfully ask the Father for the Holy Spirit so that we can discern his will for us with regard to sacrificially loving him and his chil-dren with our material blessings. As we say in the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy will be done.” Amen.

NEWMAN CLUB

Newman Club is the Catholic Gators’ weekly outreach ministry. Every Tuesday during the Summer B, Fall, and

Spring semesters the Newman Club offers free dinner for all college students after the 5:30pm mass in the parish

lounge. The 11 officers prepare the meal and set up the lounge each week, inviting their fellow college students to

come meet new people and enjoy a meal with friends. There is something special about sharing a meal with others.

Newman is a place for food, fellowship and fun. Periodically there are games, music, photo booths, and themed

decorations making this a great place for students to take a break from their schoolwork and meet others. Newman

Club is the largest Catholic Gators ministry. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue to welcome more

and more students into this vibrant community!

Your Help and Support is Needed – “Feel the Love 5K”

We are asking for your help and support. Many of you have

been keeping Diana Kanaszka – Deacon Chuck Kanaszka’s

daughter – in your prayers over the last couple of years

following her collapse and diagnosis of heart failure. Things

have become critical and she must have a heart transplant

as soon as one becomes available for her. A parishioner

from the Cathedral Parish has formed a corporation, St Au-

gustine United, Inc. (a 501c) to raise money for Diana’s

medical needs. The corporation has organized a 5K Run

called FEEL THE LOVE 5K to be held September 10 at St

Augustine Pier starting at 8 a.m. Volunteers, runners, spon-

In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable about the rich man who selfishly stored all his grain and goods only to die and not enjoy his abundance anyway. What we struggle all our lives to learn is that life does not consist of possessions nor our perceived security, but of being possessed by God.
