In a flash, Squiz jumped up the bars of the gate and, with a flick of his bushy tail, flipped the latch so that the gate, with Big Dog stuck in it, swung open.

Scrambling backwards, Big Dog freed himself from the gate and ran through the opening created by his small friend. Together, they pushed the gate closed just in time to feel the angry bull’s breath snorting through his nose.

“Too late!” hissed the bull.“Lucky escape!” said Big Dog.

Deep in a forest lies Pug’s Hole – home to a group of peculiar and opinionated creatures, who like nothing better than to eat, sleep and ponder over the world around them. And what could provide something better to think about than the arrival of a mysterious, large, pink egg? Who or what will hatch out of it and what adventures will result?

Perhaps you have a friend like Big Dog – someone who will lead you on an adventure, carry you across a stream, clear a path for you and help you on your way. But perhaps one day, your friend may need your help in return.

This story explores the friendship between Big Dog and Squiz – a squirrel. Follow them as they set off to explore and see how Squiz’s quick thinking helps to save the day.

Sometimes the things you own become a part of you, and that’s how Scruffy feels about his blanket. So when it goes missing, this loveable little dog sets out on a very smelly journey to sniff it out.

by Lynne Hudson

Where can it be?

It’s snuggly and warm

and smells just like me.

I know, I’ll sniff it out!

Sniff! Sniff! Sniff!

... but they’re not my blanket

and they don’t smell of dog.

So I sniff and I snuffle

as I scurry around

’til I find a new smell ...

So I’ll grab it and pull it

and tug ’til it’s free.

There were turtles, snakes and a rat,

A cheetah, a deer

Why not sniff out some of our other great titles?

Marion Clark loves rhythm and rhyme and found writing her fi rst picture book, Croc on the Rock, entertaining and fun. She hopes that it will make you laugh too.Tanya Fenton ‘snapped’ up the chance to illustrate the story after completing her hugely entertaining Three Silly Chickens, also published by Hogs Back Books.

But once he has splashed around all by himself, the croc realises that a world without friends is no fun at all and sharing the river is the best way to enjoy it.

Furious again, he stood on his rock

And thumped ‘til the water did shiver.

The angry croc, he yelled out so loud,

“GET OUT OF MY RIVER!”

Yelled the croc on the rock,

“I’ll eat you for my tea.”“GET OUT OF MY RIVER!”

Yelled the croc on the rock,

“This brief factual romp through the A-Z of Egypt is interesting and light hearted”

The School Librarian

Book of the Dead

BaBeetleThis humble dung beetle (also called a scarab beetle) represented hope and rebirth for Egyptians. They believed it rolled the sun across the sky each day in the same way a beetle rolls a ball of dung across the sand.

Everyone in Egypt wanted to end up in the Afterlife, but getting there wasn’t easy. Fortunately, you had writings from the “Book of the Dead” in your tomb, which were full of tips, tricks, charms and spells to guide you on your way.

Picture this funny-looking fellow, called a Ba, with your face on it (you can take or leave the false beard). Egyptians believed this winged creature would fly from your mummified body to be reunited with your Ka (your life force and body double) and form your Akh, which was needed to survive in the Afterlife. It is where the expression “getting your akh together” probably didn’t come from.

Crocodiles

CatsCartouche

Egyptians loved animals (they thought they were gods in disguise) and were particularly fond of cats. Other sacred animals included: hawks, ibises, dogs, lions and baboons. Anyone who deliberately killed a sacred animal was put to death. Even accidental killings could be punished.

Rich nobles kept crocodiles as status symbols in their homes, while priests allowed them to roam freely around temples. Often the crocs were dressed in jewels – I suppose they would have been called “snappy dressers”.

Pharaohs liked their name to stand out, so when they had temples or tombs built, their name was carved into the walls in an oval frame called a “cartouche”.Incredible! The more I ignore them, the more they treat me like a god.

Thank goodness, for one moment I thought

it was a head!

Y Yellow and red cardsThe use of yellow cards to caution players for bad behaviour on the pitch and red cards to send them off was first introduced during the

1970 World Cup in Mexico. The idea came just four years earlier, when referee Ken Aston watched traffic lights change from amber to red on his way home from Wembley Stadium during the 1966 World Cup.

Red and yellow cards are a simple system, but mistakes can happen. In the 2006 World Cup, referee Graham Poll forgot to send Croatia’s Josip Simunic off the pitch after awarding him a second yellow card. However, he did eventually send the Croatian off when he picked up his third

yellow card of the match! That’s more cards than some players get in their whole career – former England Captain Gary Lineker (dubbed “Mr Nice Guy”) played for Everton,

Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspurs, and Barcelona without once receiving a yellow or red card.

Now there’s an idea!

ZZaireWhen Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) advanced to the tournament stage of the 1974 World Cup, things didn’t go as planned. After losing 9-0 to Yugoslavia, the players were told that, if they lost to Brazil by more than three goals, they wouldn’t be allowed back home. As the Brazilians prepared to take a free kick, things were looking bad, so defender Mwepu Ilunga charged at the players and kicked the ball out of the way. He was given a yellow card, but in the end Zaire only lost 3-0 and all was well.

Zizinho and ZizouYou might think that Brazilian footballer Zizinho would be unique in helping his team reach the fi nal of the World Cup (in 1950) in his home country, receiving the “Golden Ball” as top player in the tournament and having two zeds in his name. But then along comes Zinedine Zidane (nickname Zizou). He achieved the same feat by reaching the World Cup fi nal in France in 1998 and winning the “Golden Ball”. Zidane also helped France secure victory in the fi nal – its

fi rst World Cup win.

Talking of “Golden balls”, this was the nickname given to David Beckham (one-time teammate of Zizou). Other nicknames for great players include: “Rei” (“King”) for Pele, “Pelusa” (“Dishevelled One”) for Maradona and the “Non-fl ying Dutchman” for Dennis Bergkamp (because of his fear of fl ying). Who will be next on the list of great players?

Could it be you?Football AZ v04f (no cover).indd 31
