APPRECIATION

The Central Coast Public Education Awards of Appreciation were held at Lisarow High School on Monday 24 August 2015. Henry Kendall High had three people recognised in 2015:

Mr Peter Yates for his significant contribution to, and leadership of, Special Education.

Ms Jean Laffan for her engaging and innovative commitment to quality teaching.

Mrs Judy Robinson for her long standing service to our school community and as P&C Secretary.

Congratulations to each of this year‟s recipients - recognition thoroughly deserved. SPORTS COORDINATOR 2016 With Mrs Julie Starkey taking on the role of Year 7 Adviser next year, Mr Rod Pratt is taking over the role of Sports Coordinator, Rod brings a wealth of experience to this job that will ensure the high quality of sport provision at our school will continue to flourish, and I thank him for taking on the challenges the role brings. This is also an opportune time to recognise the contribution to school sport that Julie has made over the past six years as Sports Coordinator. It is a diverse and demanding role involving weekly coordination of resources, venues, students and staff as well as meeting all risk assessment, financial, medical and logistical challenges; on top of this is the complexity of coordinating school and zone carnivals. Julie has taken on these challenges in a manner that our school has maintained a fantastic, diverse and well managed sporting program, and I thank her for her commitment and hard work - it is appreciated.

PERFORMING ARTS NIGHT Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 August saw our 2015 Performing Arts Nights, held this year in our school hall. Monday night showcased the creative talents of Henry Kendall High School music, drama and dance students, with a breathtaking quality of performance and creativity. Tuesday night showcased the four schools of the Gosford City Learning Community, and again the standard on display was outstanding. Productions of this nature are the culmination of months of hard work, and I‟d like to recognise and thank the students and staff involved, in particular our producers Mr Damien Clift, Mrs Jade Draper and Mrs Mary Gillard. SRE RELIGIOUS GROUPS (SRE) There has recently been a focus on religious education in schools. At Henry Kendall High School the only religious group accessing the school is the Wednesday lunchtime group „Flipside‟. Flipside is a program delivered by the EV Church in Erina, who are an approved provider of SRE, and meet in an informal setting in the playground under supervision of a teacher on duty. A letter to all parents is being sent home regarding the Flipside program. Any parents who wish for their son/daughter to attend the Flipside program need to sign and return the permission slip attached to this letter. SAS RECOGNITION WEEK This week has been National Recognition Week for all School Administrative and Support Staff (SAS). The theme of our recognition week is “Our Jobs, Your Children, Their Future”. The enormous commitment behind the scenes that is provided by our SAS staff every day ensures that we are able to provide the highest quality, contemporary educational experiences for your children and their futures. At Henry Kendall High our SAS staff is a dedicated group of professionals who are valued members of our school community without whom we could not operate. They play a vital role in students learning by assisting teachers with implementing educational programs, maintaining records, and looking after our grounds and resources. STUDENT SERVICES

Khalen Beetham from Year 9 has been selected to attend the University of Newcastle's LIVE IT! program. He will be staying on campus over 5 days, at the University Residence with 90, Year 9 boys selected from across NSW. Khalen will participate in a number of hands on activities which will showcase what university is like, with a focus on Maths, Science, Engineering Health and Careers. The boys will also get to enjoy the University facilities and will participate in swimming at the Forum and attend Trivia Nights.

YEAR 10 ADVISER REPORT

Year 10 has been hard at work across all subject areas these past few weeks. In English, they have been investigating madness and ambition in Shakespeare‟s Macbeth (on which there is an assessment task in Week 9); while in History they have been learning about the rights and freedoms of various groups of people throughout time. Meanwhile, the Stage 5 Music and Drama classes had been busily rehearsing their successful PAN performances. The Drama class is now moving onto their circus and clowning unit – with hopefully no nightmares!

A supplier for the 2016/17 senior jacket has been decided upon. They are currently creating some design samples to send to the school. As a group, we will then choose the colour scheme and other specific design details of the jackets. We are on target for the jackets to be ready during Term 1, 2016.

On Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 of August, Henry Kendall High School hosted our annual Performing Arts Night, affectionately known as PAN. I was very proud of the Year 10 performers, which included the aforementioned Stage 5 Music and Drama classes. I would particularly like to congratulate Owen Butterworth, Nico Falzarano, Tom Josephs and Amber McAlpine who performed a moving rendition of one of my favourites, Radiohead‟s „Fake Plastic Trees‟. Perhaps next year the group could enter a song into Triple J‟s Unearthed High?

I would like to congratulate the following students who have recently received Year Awards: Nathan Atkinson, Danielle Guyot, Seohyun Inn, Jay Knowling, Ben Mear, Zahlee Ogston, Sabrina Pal, Finn Perry, Nicolas Seabrook, Tiphanie Thackray and Lucy Wang. Well done on achieving your personal best!

AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

The 2015 Australian Mathematics Competition saw some wonderful results from students. Two students achieved outstanding results, Sooin Byeon and SeoKyoung Inn, both achieved distinction. Wilson Wu and Jack Rogers received awards at the credit level and all others who entered were declared proficient by the competition organisers. The awards range from high distinction to participation. Thank you to all the students who entered and gave their best effort.

Electives Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 will be receiving an email to their school address very soon indicating the courses they have applied for and been successful in being offered. If there are gaps indicated students may choose from the courses listed and reply to the email with their request. Students may talk with their Year Adviser or Mrs James regarding these matters. We have, successfully satisfied the vast majority of requests though some classes are now filled. There are some courses that did not have sufficient interest and are not able to be provided.


WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

PARENT COFFEE SHOP LUNCHEON

The speaker at the Term 3, Week 5 coffee shop lunch was Julie Marsden from the Department of Human services. Julie spoke on the various services and entitlements students with disabilities or parents and carers of students with a disability may access. Julie was able to give people at the coffee shop luncheon information that can help them through the maze that sometimes they are faced with.

The group of 35 parents enjoyed the lunch and were able to meet and discuss upcoming events involving their children both at and outside of school. Many parents find these get togethers similar in nature to a support group with many positive experiences attributed to their attendance at them.

PERFORMING ARTS NIGHT 2015

Performing Arts Night of Monday 24 August was the second time that the Special Education Dancers have stepped out. The students were hard at it learning their new disco themed piece prior to the night. Performing Arts Night also saw the first appearance of the Special Education Centre‟s signing choir. These students practised intently at perfecting their performance for the big night. Both performances were hugely successful.

OUR FIRST DANCE GROUP BOOKING

In September, the Dance group has also been booked to dance at the opening of the SEPLA (Special Education Principals' and Leaders' Association) conference at Crowne Plaza Terrigal. This request came about as a direct result of the students efforts in the 2015 Performing Arts Night.

SCENIC CENTRAL COAST

In week 7 a small group of students from the Special Education Centre had a two day excursion visiting some great spots around the local area. The students had very close encounters with creatures at the Calga Wildlife Walkabout Park. They saw the pelicans being fed at The Entrance, had a stroll along the water front and enjoyed a delicious meal at La Costa restaurant before staying over-night. Backpackers at The Entrance provided affordable accommodation with disability access for our group. The next day the kids drove slot cars at Charmhaven and visited the Old Wyong Milk Factory. There we saw chocolate being made and of course tried some! We had a picnic by the Wyong River and a quick work out at the gym before returning to school on Thursday afternoon. We did 120km over the two days and appreciated being driven in the Wheeling and Able bus by Mrs Koltsis.

SNOW TRIP

PASS students enjoyed the annual snow trip to Thredbo on 4-7 August. We had some great skiing and boarding conditions with expert lessons giving the students the opportunity to really progress their skills and have a fun time.

Mr Mellish was a hit with his GoPro and selfie stick; the students enjoying the short movie he made of the trip when they returned. The great staff at Vikas Lodge looked after us as usual with students enjoying movies, the games room and hanging out with their friends after a hard day on the slopes.

It was a real pleasure to take this group of students away and they should be proud of the positive attitude, cooperation and teamwork demonstrated. Many thanks to the staff who came along and helped make this a successful and enjoyable trip – Mr Rod Pratt, Ms Stevens and Mr Michael Mellish. Thanks also to our great SAS staff for administration assistance and also to Mr Backhouse for his ongoing support. Looking forward to next year‟s trip!

On Friday 21 August, Mr Silver‟s and Mr Jones‟

Biology classes ventured into Sydney to visit the

Australia Museum. Some of the exhibitions fitted very

well with our current topic of the “Australian Biota”.

We were able to view interesting and informative

displays of animals that walked this land but which

are now mostly extinct. These include a Diprotodon

that is like a wombat the size of a hippopotamus and

the ferocious marsupial lion. It was a great experience

to “bring to life” many aspects of our studies.

Unlike Ben Stiller who had a lot of trouble with his

dinosaur, we managed to find a Brontosaurus who

was willing to sit up while we took a photo.

Do You Want To Be A Volunteer Fire Fighter?

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) is holding its annual “Get Ready” weekend on the 12th and 13th of

September. This event is designed to make households aware of potential fire dangers and help you get

ready for the coming bush fire season. Along with this, it gives you a chance to meet your local Bush Fire

Brigade, understand what they do, have a look at their fire fighting equipment and fire station, and also

to volunteer as a Fire Fighter if that interests you.

For the Get Ready Weekend, Narara Bush Fire Brigade is holding an open day on Sunday the 13th of

September from 10am till 3pm at 2 Manns Rd, Narara. Come along if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like

to be a fire fighter. There will be lots RFS fire fighters available to answer your questions and show you

around.
