Becky Christmas History of the music video and Narrative of a music video What more can you say regarding the specific type of music video it is? The ‘Pretty Hurts’ music video by Beyoncé is a narrative base music video rather than a performance as it exaggerates the importance of the plot of girls getting eating disorders due to their obsession to change for the media. This is also reinforced in Taylor Swift’s music video ‘Mean’ as the importance of bullying and overcoming these problems is emphasised in the narrative. However, an aspect of performance is shown in this video as in numerous shots Taylor Swift is playing the guitar with a band which could imply that she has overcome the negativity in her life and has still been successful. As well as this, Bruno Mar’s music video ‘Grenade’ is mostly a narrative base music video as the plot and the lyrics are extremely important so therefore a narrative music video is necessary in order for the audience to understand the story of the music. Why does these genres use these types of music videos? All three music videos; Pretty hurts, Mean and Grenade fit in the category of pop music and therefore could suggest that with this genre, a narrative is important in order for the audience to understand the plot of the lyrics. Additionally, it could be implied that in order to gain more views on YouTube and therefore increase their popularity, a narrative is key as it engages the audience and gives people a reason to talk about it. What more can you can you say about how the music video types in the previous reading relate to the history of music videos? The history of the music videos links with the three narrative base music videos as because of the expansion of MTV, artists including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars now understand the necessity to make their music videos as narrative base because it will be aired on television so needs to be memorable in order to increase their success. This is also exaggerated as now artists have the opportunity to win awards including ‘Best Music Video’ therefore they will feel the need to make their music video as unique as possible in order to achieve this. Has the type of music videos changed over time?

Becky ChristmasHistory of the music video and Narrative of a music videoWhat more can you say regarding the specific type of music video it is?The Pretty Hurts music video by Beyonc is a narrative base music video rather than a performance as it exaggerates the importance of the plot of girls getting eating disorders due to their obsession to change for the media. This is also reinforced in Taylor Swifts music video Mean as the importance of bullying and overcoming these problems is emphasised in the narrative. However, an aspect of performance is shown in this video as in numerous shots Taylor Swift is playing the guitar with a band which could imply that she has overcome the negativity in her life and has still been successful. As well as this, Bruno Mars music video Grenade is mostly a narrative base music video as the plot and the lyrics are extremely important so therefore a narrative music video is necessary in order for the audience to understand the story of the music. The history of the music videos links with the three narrative base music videos as because of the expansion of MTV, artists including Beyonc, Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars now understand the necessity to make their music videos as narrative base because it will be aired on television so needs to be memorable in order to increase their success. This is also exaggerated as now artists have the opportunity to win awards including Best Music Video therefore they will feel the need to make their music video as unique as possible in order to achieve this.Has the type of music videos changed over time? The type of music video has dramatically changed over time. Over time, there has been an increase in narrative base music videos in order to increase their success. Additionally, over time there has been more exhibitionism as women are portrayed in a sexual manner in most music videos which gives the audience more reasons to watch their music video. As well as this, music videos have become more creative due to the development of cameras and special effects which emphasises the virtual era that current artists have to keep up to date with. What has influenced this? The changing music video is due to the more diverse attitudes that has developed over time. For example, in 1960s women wore long dresses and were a lot more conservative with their clothing, whereas now wearing a plunge top or a short skirt is not frowned upon as much. Therefore, music videos can use this for their advantage and use it to the extreme. Also, music videos were not as technical as they are now due to the development of cameras and special effects that were not available previously. Can you provide examples to support your opinions?Examples to support the idea of increase exhibitionism is partition by Beyonc who wears provocative clothing throughout the video to emphasize the sexual lyrics. As well as this, an example in which the use of special effects are used is the Break Free music video by Ariana Grande which frequently uses special effects including green screens to exaggerate the video.
